I am extremely envious that this person is capable of doing this for a living, and making a good amount of money for it also. I am aware that professional gaming is no walk in the virtual park, but still it's something that I would absolutely love to do.
And for all the people who complain about it not being a sport, or it not being fair, you're all just as jealous as myself that you can't play computer games for a living...
I'm talking not about the contents of the article, but the point at which society stopped dealing with personal issues and problems and instead desperately started seeking someone to blame, and ultimately, to sue. Is there a definitive point in history where we went from dealing with something, to trying to extort 'comfort money' from those that we deem responsible?
People who sue in cases like this are trying to quantify something that can't be quantified, usually 'emotional damage'. Last time I checked, I couldn't produce a dollar amount for what I'm currently feeling, but as soon as someone with a lot of money seems to be responsible for my emotional state, I can pull a figure from the ether and claim that's the precise economical value of my pain.
I realise this isn't much to do with the article, but it's starting to get beyond a joke. As far as I know lawsuits were originally intended as a way to recoup actual, tangible losses. Not as the new get rich quick scam.
Disclaimer: I am British, but our country is getting just as bad as that of our neighbours to the west.
There is no way in this world to prove that the child in question re-created a scene from a computer game, unless he left a detailed suicide note detailing that he was mimicing a fictional world.
Perhaps the world could do with either a) less irresponsible parents or b) less stupid children, or my personal favourite c) both.
I mean seriously, I'm going to consume babies and then sue the Vatican because a passage in the Bible inspired me to do so*. Would I get away with being such a moron, of course not. A much preferred headline would have been: Parents imprisoned for failure to properly raise a child.
* Here is the passage: "And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow. So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son. -- II Kings 6:28,29
Download the PDF version, it's much nicer to read. Although I agree that the website doesn't work well at all. Perhaps they should use the website as a 'light' version of the actual magazine?
Now, I understand what they are saying here, but why the inclusion specifically of the black young man holding a shotgun? I suppose if the same game featured a young white inner-city youth roaming the mean streets, or a latino kid, the game would be ok to pick up and enjoy?
I like the way that you use selective political-correctness to try and accuse them of being racist, yet you completely disregard the fact that they also said man.

The specific inclusion of a specific gender into their "bad games" definition is a bit much, IMO.
(Please note the use of sarcasm here, just to point out the article was no more racist than it was sexist)
Hopefully they are not going to use Steam to the exclusion of all other distribution methods, I recently purchased physical copies of Darwinia which are very professional for an indie developer.
If Steam is the only method, then that severely limits the options for Linux users too, which are more likely to play this game because it has a native port and it's on the disc.
What bothers me more personally is how IE systematically ignores the 'larger font sizé' option on a lot of webistes. I figure this is because of some use of css, but I didn't put too much effort in finding out what exactly causes the problem.
This happens when someone specifies a font size in pixels, in a stylesheet or an inline style declaration. I have no idea why it's incapable of scaling px and can do pt just fine. Not to mention the other browsers, notably Opera and Mozilla, can do this without a problem.
On a side note, Opera scales the entire page, not just the text, which is pretty hard for me to describe, but is fantastic from an accessibility perspective. </propaganda>
Actually, a corporation does all the "work" you're talking about, I don't know exactly what the United States government actually does in regards to the internet.
If you read into Nintendos past they are the biggest control freaks in the history of videogaming, and used shady tactics and threats and such to make their consoles dominant in their prime.
A little history goes a long way, I know I have no link but a simple web search will yield many results...
I know he's considered as a bit of a prick, but ESR explains exactly why this would be one of the worst things that could happen here.
Make of it what you will.
You mis-spelled 'US' several times there.

I'm just saying.
What's your take on golf then? Or bowling? Or darts? Or snooker?
Sure, you may not be an athlete, but I'm pretty sure they count as sports.

A lot of people in the past thought slavery was good too.

They burn it at the end, but it's censored for American viewing.
</risque>
because sentience appears to be a necessary quality for the best command of language.
And if slashdot, indeed the entire internet, is any indication--sentience usually isn't enough either.
Wow. Software has flaw allowing remote hackery. This seems to be pretty typical of just about any piece of software written these days (or any days.)
;)
Except for the thousands of software applications that don't have network functionality!

I don't really think that 300 Gigabytes is really necessary for videos...
Even the current American administration would have a hard time topping that one.
Although they are trying their hardest to!
Steam is a middle man.

Isn't it the USA that has mandatory ID cards and foreign prisons with torture facilities?

Maybe it's time to Get Perpendicular!
I'd prefer to think of 10 being a score meaning "one of the best things I have ever seen", and not absolute perfection.
'With text games, you can sit there at the prompt, go make a sandwich, then come back and play more.'
Obviously someone has stolen his pause button!
Yeah, we don't have format wars online at all!
Oh wait, ogg and mp3, avi and mpeg, gif and png, doc and pdf, need I go on?
And I think people will prefer tangible, transferable property in the form of discs instead of one fat harddrive.
If what you said was true, no one would have CD's or cassettes, we'd just use radio.
What makes you think Sony's Entertainment division has much to do with their electronics division?
It's a big company and screw ups do happen, but let's all focus on the bad like the good little sheep drones we are.
Disclaimer: Not a Sony fanboy, just sick of all the pessimistic crap.
