- granted, one of the reviews was published by the Washington Post, or as it is more affectionately termed by the clueful here inside the Belchway, "The Washington Fishwrap," due to its many mindless liberal-biased headlines and stories...
- however, Pegoraro has regularly covered Linux/OSS issues in the Fishwrap's Tech section (hidden inside an embarrassingly small Business section for a major daily), such as Red Hat's distros and OpenOffice.org... he has done so with an objectivity not found on other tech sites (hint, hint: OSNews??)
- it's frustrating to read about 'Joe Six-pack' views of Linux-based operating systems...
- but frankly, while Pegoraro's views have not always been 'spot-on Linux knowledgable,' they have been objective...
- my point? give the guy a break, send a *nice* email (you do know how to do that, right?), and be helpful!
- i suspect, and IIRC, he is a Mac OS X user...
- gee, i use a $100 laptop running NetBSD and X with WiFi and get 10 hours on a dual-LiIon battery... of course the technology is very old, and the laptops (WinCE devices) are no longer made...
- my Apple Powerbook gets 2+hours, but OS X is worth every minute...
- perhaps PC notebook manufacturers and Intel don't have a clue, while older technology (and new technology from Apple) works?
- my take on ebay? never gamble more than you're willing to lose...
- my days are over w/ebay and paypal... the preset limit allowed by paypal for credit card purchases was fine while it lasted, but after you hit the limit, you must allow paypal to link to one of your bank accounts...
- you'd have to be insane to allow any company to link into your bank account!
- until true credit card protection is provided for ebay purchases, the ebay/paypal method is doomed, as THERE IS NO PROTECTION AGAINST FRAUD!
- i was on TechTV a couple years ago... the publisher flew me out to SF and i got to take a cab to the studio...
- the TechTV folks were very friendly, and Leo, et al. had a great crew... fast-paced, lots of good content, and an on-line chatter available in the studio to ask and respond to questions...
- but of course, i'd expect nothing less from Comcast, one of the worst and most expensive cable companies in existence...
yep - my feelings exactly!
- i'm still waiting to be able to walk into compusa/best buy/circuit city/micro center and be able to buy a laptop with no Microsoft software...
- i kinda look on this as part of the natural evolution of the software industry, which seems to be moving along the same path of the electronics industry, in which there is much cross-licensing...
- for example, neither Sony nor Kenwood, or Toshiba, et al, design, produce and market a new CD/AM/FM/clock without first transferring millions of dollars between themselves in order to avoid IP/patent lawsuits... it's getting harder and harder for an engineer to design a new CPU, let alone any electronic device without someone, somewhere popping out of the woodwork with a lawsuit UNLESS a cross-license fee has been paid...
- lots of money changes hands between the large-scale industrialists on a regular basis...
- unfortunately the proprietary software industry as a whole still has not woken up and recognized the opportunities of open source licensing and free software:
1. no money need change hands and everyone benefits from everyone's efforts
2. state of the art is advanced rather than choked off in wasted time and effort in the govt. and court systems...
3. better business relationships are created and maintained between companies and customers when companies collaborate and customers are the object of support...
- tks!
- always nice to get a helpful URL (i'm not really a Lindows/Linspire user, but couldn't pass up the chance to at least try the distro using the free coupon code at linspire.com)
- have a happy!
- tried Linspire 4.5 on an MPC w/SATA... the 4.5 release was out for a week or so...
- no go!
- so i took my six-month old Fedora Core 1 release and tried...
- FC1 works like a charm and costs much less!:-)
- i'm not surprised...
- i've even had one of my software projects illegally reproduced and distributed by O'Reilly in David Pogue's book, "PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide"...
- this was DESPITE the fact the my copyright was included in the source and the binary (under About)...
- but i didn't bust O'Reilly's chops about it, 'cause i met Tim O'Reilly at a Perl developers conference in Monterey a few years ago, and he was nice to me...
- btw, Linspire is an awful distro: no man command, no SSH, does NOT support SATA, etc...
- i lived in Mass. back in 1987...
- you'd have to be insane to live in that state!
- moved into a house in Braintree, MA, and two days later, the tax collector was at the house, asking:
1. how many people live here?
2. what are number of vehicles per each occupant, and what the license plate numbers of each vehicle?
3. how many cats or dogs do you have?
p.s. they tried to tax me for one of my pets who passed away - i Snail-Mailed back, "The Dog is Dead!"
p.s.s. never again will i live in that state!
- why does anyone use any Microsoft software anymore?
- there is no reason to use any Microsoft product anymore AFAIK...
- someone please tell me why i should use any Microsoft product?
- tracking down spammers is a 'maze of twisty little passages, all alike'...
- i think domain registrars should be held responsible for sponsoring, enabling, and hiding spammers...
- thanks to folks like Bruce Perens, who advocate the elimination of CW testing for amateur radio operators (http://www.nocode.org), the new symbol won't become part of any official testing for amateur radio operators...
- get ready for 11-meter operations on all the HF bands!
- i knew someone would have a clue!
- "A Quarter Century of UNIX" is an *excellent* book!
- highly recommended, and a keeper... (i still have the rectangular promo button/badge distributed by the publisher with the book)
- now if i could only get my hands on the barf bag included with the UNIX haters book...:-)
- lots of folks use the BIOS health monitoring screen while tweaking fan RPM speeds on the CPU, power supply and case fans... adjust the fan speeds for acceptable noise level while monitoring temp settings... you can use a $4.95 variable unit with multiple leads and extensions, or for the price of a couple resistors (about 9 cents for three) in-line on the positive fan leads, get quite acceptable results... of course, one could always turn to a mini-ITX mobo w/embedded CPU...
- you won't be disappointed! i've been using several on the LAN for at least a year or so...
- my first mini-ITX mobo was put into a recycled two-SCSI drive enclosure, and it has been running 24/7 as a firewall since first boot (barring power outages)... instead of a monitor for the unit, i hooked up a Matrix Orbital RS232 LCD panel, which scrolls informational messages (sys load, HD storage, network info, who's logged on, etc.)...
- i have another in a box sitting in a corner - it functions as a wireless backup device (tertiary unit)...
- my main workstation is a Shuttle SV25... small, quiet (after fan mods), and very efficient... i also use a $30 TV card in it for quick, on-the-fly PVR and watching TV...
- low power, low cost, and Linux compatibility? why ask for more?:-)
i got a digital signal processing enabled high-frequency transceiver optimized for carrier-wave communication!
even more surprising, it was made in America by Americans (if you count people residing in Tennessee as Americans?):-)

- because even with the 900+ channels in my area, there's nothing on! - seriously though, it seems like broadcast TV is going down FAST!
- how about a link to the script? sounds like a great idea!
also, kill all the HR weenies! :-)
