- thanks! it is comforting to know that one can turn to the ALSA folks for help (i've used ALSA on other laptops, such as the Sony C1XS)
- appreciate your pointer
- i hope the OSS driver now supports the Neomagic audio chipset properly... it's been a while since i had sound working in my 390X (i guess i could pop for the binary drivers)...
- am looking forward to using the new kernel!
- as has been pointed out before here... if you have a 401(k) or invest in indexed funds (such as those from Vanguard), YOU OWN A PIECE OF SCO!
- fund managers cannot even remove SCOX from the fund's index!
- most Slashdotters would be quite surprised to learn that they own a small piece of Microsoft as well (depending on investments held)...
- a horrifying thought to be sure..
- much of the problem with spam could be alleviated by holding registrars such as Network Solutions, etc. responsible for ensuring accurate DNS entries...
- there are literally millions of falsified entries, which makes tracking down mail abusers more difficult...
- ah, FLEX!!!! the days of Frank Hogg (the mad dentist in Syracuse), and my good buddy, Dale Puckett (hacker extraordinaire)...
- but i never did have a good dialup experience with FLEX... that changed with Microware's OS9...
- thanks for the flashback!:-)
- the same pundits who downplayed Linux in the early days are again coming out of the woodwork as the software monopoly expends even more capital in trying to maintain its stranglehold on the industry (e.g., increased TV advertising, magazine ads, and 'backdoor' deals to fuel IP litigation)
- at first Linux was just a 'toy' OS, only fit for experimentation
- next it was, 'there's no support for protocols and standards'
- next it was, 'it's not good enough to host a server'
- after that it was, 'it's not ready for the desktop'
- in the last year it has been 'it violates IP rights'
- now we're moving into the 'Linux developer community is self-defeating and immature (read: non-professional)' and 'Linux is wrong for the following reasons' stage
- Satan and his minions are everywhere... don't expect the software monopoly to easily roll over - it is fighting (in vain, IMO) for its life...
- the next several years will be interesting indeed, but the fact is that Linux has handily won the server and desktop market - only the Evil Empire hasn't realized it just yet...
- i've been freelancing for many years, but have been full-time from the house since 1997 (kinda forced to, as a military pension only affords one the ability to eat dogfood casseroles)...
- it took me about three years, but i finally got the 'stir crazies' (and developed severe apnea along the way)...
- my solution was to start teaching Linux several nights a week at a local business college...
- human interaction, a chance to get out of the house, sharpen personal communication skills, and make new friends among peers...
- working from the house is fine... but not for everyone...
- i'm still waiting to be able to use the PCI AIW card ATI released this time last year...
- i was quite naive in assuming ATI cared about the Linux market, and bought the card... it works fine as a video card, but AIW? TV capture/viewing? nope!
- PC hardware manufacturers should heed a warning: Don't ignore your current and potential future market. Do support Linux, or you may find that your company has developed an unsavory reputation along with way...
- i cannot recommend ATI as a "Linux savvy" manufacturer
- 10.2??? heck, i'm still using 10.1.4, net upgraded from 10.1
- works fine for me...
- but i wonder how long the updates will be available... i shudder to think what might happen if i have to do a reinstall and bring the system back up to snuff...
- when bottomfeeders and IP portfolios mix, one shouldn't be surprised by such actions...
- sadder however, is that the U.S. court system allows this case to continue to be played out...
- the big warning here is that no future technology endeavours or independent software developers are safe from venture capitalists, investment brokers, and reptiles that have passed state bar exams...
- lipstick on a pig is still a pig with lipstick...
- screenwriters and other industry hacks know the best platform and products to use - and they aren't from the software monopoly...
- i wouldn't be surprised to see consumer and corporate anger regarding the software monopoly become even more prevalent on the large and small screen...
- the Evil Empire can spend all the money in its coffers on improving its image, but any effort won't remove the past or erase its evil history...
- i doubt it... the telemarketing industry is transient with high employee turnover... and the telemarketing industry does not create consumer need where it does not exist...
- what DNC signups will have is peace and quiet, especially during dinner time, along with the ability to work and telecommute from home without interruption...
- i would be against the DNC if i were to receive a check from each caller who wasted my time and interrupted my work - heck, i might even listen to a pitch or two...
- i relish the day when telemarketers no longer call my home - they are free to call anyone who wants to receive the calls, however...
- i'd even be against the DNC if the local phone company provided DNC phone numbers at no cost - that way i'd be able to more easily opt out...
- but then there'd be no reason to have a DNC, right?
- as the author of Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed, i like to say thanks for all the kind words regarding the book (and also any unkind words, as i have a thick skin and take constructive criticism to heart)...
- i'm not sure about the blank pages you found in your copy of Red Hat Linux 9, as my copy doesn't have these blank pages, and i don't think Sams Publishing (Pearson) would allow a printing like that (of course worse things have happened, such as corrupt CD-ROMs)...
- i think the Linux Bible series is good too, and i have copies of many different books about Linux... i've met many other Linux authors, but have not had the pleasure to chat with authors of the Bible or 'Secrets'... this is something i look forward to (perhaps in NYC this winter?)...
- i also wrote Linux Unleashed, which covered Caldera, Red Hat, and Debian, and SuSE Linux Unleashed... and a book on using Linux on your Apple PowerPC... i would like to see more books on Debian and SuSE, but you know what? publishers won't do them because they don't sell! (or fit into the publisher's marketing scheme)
- i write about Linux because i believe in Linux... believe me when i say that writing technical books is no way to make a living - horrendous deadlines, sweating out revised content based on beta releases, and authoring contracts that turn your book efforts into a vanity press pursuit...
- i have been dreading a review of my book here on/. as i'm aware that there are many of you out there who are far more talented and knowledgable about Linux and other software services than i... all i can say is that i hope that the information i present is technically accurate, helpful, and well-organized...
content is another matter (the Unleashed series are *supposed* to be aimed at intermediate to advanced users, but it seems that newbies, God bless 'em, buy the book anyway - i'd much rather write books for the total newbie than the astute user, because i remember the excitement i felt when i first started using Linux and realized just how powerful it is...
anyway, thanks for not scorching my shorts on this one...

p.s. i'm sure hd would chime in here, but he's trapped on a cruise liner with a number of Linux madmen at the moment (the Geek Cruise)...
- i'd normally feel inclined to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but in light of his guilty plea, i feel no pity for this miscreant...
- i hope he leave prison with an anus enlarged by many unwanted advances by fellow 'gender conflicted' inmates...
- in other countries he would be beheaded, but in the United States he'll get three hots and a cot, reading material, exercise, and access to a lawyer... that's still too good for this son-of-a-female-dog...
- yep, i filed at the Web site (link long gone for me), but i've never recv'd anything...
- oh well, i guess if i never get my refund, i'll just copy a few audio CDs...
(believe it or not, i don't download pirated.mp3s...)
- ask him why he thinks high-frequency radio operations will be better off if the FCC removes the requirement for 5WPM CW testing for upgrading to a General class radio operator license...
- Perens supports a 'no-code' license for amateur radio operators to use the HF bands (see http://www.nocode.org)...
- the 5WPM requirement is a reduction from previous levels of CW WPM operator expertise, but is considered by many to an essential demonstrable skill (radiotelegraphy) for HF radio operations...
- it is unfortunate that Linux is involved in SCO's machinations, but the company's behavior only serves to highlight the problems with the U.S. patent system (there are also problems with the copyright system as well)...
- i also look at SCO's behavior as a prime example of what to expect in the software industry as open source forces a paradigm shift towards commoditization of the operating system... the next resort will be embedded solutions (which, as we've seen, may also be manipulated)...
- wait until the software monopoly (Microsoft) starts experiencing the market effects of free software... unless the company has been given direction to 'reinvent' itself within the next six years, Microsoft will start lashing out - and it will have a much bigger stick... i'd be willing to bet that Microsoft is closely monitoring SCO's efforts (and of course, feeding monies as a client in licensing 'transactions')...
