One would think that the government, rather than having to implement a program to make up for the deficiencies of a private product would start regulating that class of products. I havent' RTFA'd, but I can only imagine that the target for this program would be Windows based systems. If MS made cars and there were all these breakdowns, accidents, deaths, crashes, etc. wouldn't the government tell them to stop producing and such low quality, shoddy products? Wouldn't there be some type of regulation, like automobile safety standards?
Should we call for inspection and disassembly of all the voting machine code to see if it contains any of these secret vote tampering functions he was asked to include in his prototype?
The government strips us of our civil liberties in the name of "security", why can't we spin the table around on them for a change?
considering 40,000 jobs were going to be axed thanks to the saving grace of IT, is it possible that this enormous crunch was intentional? Prove that if IT craps out those 40,000 jobs become invaluable?
Actually, what I was referring to was the means by which the rich client would put, retrieve, and display the files on the shared server space (ie, the window in which these tasks are performed).
You're right about the app getting cracked though... But doesn't firefox already have Extensions that allow you to disable banner ads on any website? Also, we can't forget that the majority of users (not us geeks) do not have the knowledge to remove the banners (seeking out and downloading a cracked client), so even then Google would still generate revenue.
What you're saying though is that Google couldn't combine the ability to make money and using GMail accounts as storage space for their product? You could see the ads still, depending on how you implement it. Also, you're assuming that g-ads couldn't be delivered to a rich client.
Hmm, maybe a shared virtual storage among a group of invited IM buddies
I think that, my friend, is a killer idea. I would imagine that *if* google were to implement this idea, the virtual storage would simply be taken out of the combined gmail account spaces.
Hey, maybe that's what they had in mind originally when they decided to offer a gig.
Man, Helen is soooooooooo hot.

How is Radiohead the poster for "indie band"... I would imagine one has to be indie before they can become the poster for "indie band"... radiohead never has been, nor will they ever be, "indie". They were huge right out the gates with Pablo Honey. Unless we're using the unfortunate drastically overused definition of the word "indie" which encompasses anything "not top 40".
Radiohead has never met either definition of "indie"; they've never been independent and low budget, nor have they ever not been a top 40. And in the scope of the article, they've never been in the tail end (except maybe prior to them releasing the single Creep in the US). You want tail end, you should be looking at bands the above poster mentioned - Shellac (nice call), Trans Am (even nicer call), and to throw in a couple of my own, Xiu Xiu, The Unicorns, and Deerhoof.
I loath the term "indie" and try not to use it at all costs, as it's losing all meaning. "indie" is to 2004 as "alternative" was to 1994.
And for the record, here's how I would classify Radiohead's albums (not like anybody cares):
So if they're breaking the law and you want somebody to actually do time, how about not offering a settlement, and just take them to court under criminal charges? Guilty until proven innocent is the status quo for the RIAA right now.
Luckily, here in Canada a judge dismissed a lawsuit involving our industry representatives (acronym's escaping me) because he said the songs available for the public to view doesn't necessarily construe that the songs were downloaded. He equated it to having a photocopier in a public library.
IANAL, but I question if it's possible for these people who get issued the lawsuits to counter sue if found not guilty?
Show me an RIAA band that gets paid millions of dollars for making records that it's actually written and or controlled. The RIAA artists that are making the millions either
a) Have all their music written for them by the RIAA(ie, they're merely performers, not musicians)
- OR -
b) have very limited, if any, artistic control over their work (considering they don't own it anymore).
So, to answer your question, yes, I do think there are a lot of bands out there that would say "screw you" when presented by a major RIAA label.
Is this a new form of colonialism? Do we all 6.3 billion have to abide to the law of a mere 300 million?
Sadly, Yes. If you ever read anything from the Project for a New American Century, they talk a lot about world domination. I'll probably be labeled a commie for this (why I seriously never understood), but Chomsky's book Hegemony Or Survival talks a lot about the new foreign policy of the US.
fair enough. However, I should point out that I'm no linux guru... fact is, I'm a windows power user who's been trying for the last year to turn over a new leaf. I've played with a lot of distro's, trying to find the easiest one to use that I, as a normal joe blow user, would actually want to use.
I recently installed FC2, and honestly, I find it incredibly easy to use. I installed it as a simple desktop pc, no more, no less. The installation was incredibly painless, updating the system is dumb easy (yum), installing apps that I need that aren't actually already included is a snap (yum, again), and it's worked perfectly with all my hardware so far (except the firewire for my iPod, which I knew it wouldn't work with before installing, that is, without massive tweaking which I'm simply too lazy to do).
In the above sense I believe I *am* being fair about it, since the majority of the windows market is all desktop, and the average desktop user knows almost dick all. My wife, who knows absolutely nothing about computers, has told me that "The new windows you put on is way easier to use." (true story).
If we want to get into servers, and perhaps some oddball hardware (my stuff is all pretty big name brand and has been around for quite a while - SB Audigy, nVidia GF2, etc.) then yea, you're absolutely right, but when it comes to having just a simple desktop used for multimedia, web browsing, email, etc., all my points are valid.
Besides, your points 1 and 4 apply to windows just as much as Linux anyways.;) And hey, I don't bash Windows because it's windows... truth is I work with it all day at work, and for the most part, I don't mind it. Even at home it's a 50/50 split, but at the end of the day, when I want to be at home and just do what I want to do with living in constant fear of a virus, my system completely crashing, or having to install the 7th critical update this week, I switch to Linux.
I'm sure id is more than compensated by nVidia... Carmack's always using advanced copies of the latest and greatest to develop against. nVidia's return? A game in which everybody that wants to play it the way it was intended to be played must upgrade.
I'm sure they have some contracts or something, and it's not just "goodwill" or fanboy reasoning as to why Carmack always codes primarily against an nVidia card.
Germany is part of the EU, correct? If so, does this decision essentially span across all member countries of the EU (much like environmental laws, etc.)?
Yea, there's a thousand cases where bands get their unfinished work lifted and distributed and then eventually downloaded, only to have the completed album come out a few months later at the original release date... and have it blow everybody's head.
Case in point: The new Wrens album. First one in 7 years. Unfinished copy gets leaked to Kazaa about 3 months before the release date. I download it. I play it. I'm blown away by it. Finished product is released. I buy it cause hey, I like the band. Finished product, in some parts, is completely different. I am treated to hearing the album all over again for the first time... and I love every second of it.
I get paid 43K a year here in the Province of Saskatchewan (about 750miles/1,200KM east of the Pacific Coast for those who have no idea where I'm talking about). Some of you in San Fran might think "Holy crap, only 43K!? No thanks!"... but lets look at my cost of living:
Rent: 525$ for a 900 sq. ft., spacious apartment with near everything
Car Insurance: 70$ a month ('96 ford escort, YEEHAW!)
Power & Utilities: 50$/ month
Hydro - Included in rent
Monthly Groceries - about 150 - 200$ for both me and my wife
Cable + high speed internet: 90$
Phone: 40$/mo.
Total: 975$
The above is in CDN $ (of course) and includes taxes (where applicable). My monthly take home, after taxes, ei, cpp (canadian pension plan), health benefits deductions, and deductions from company shares is still 2,350$ a month. 2,350 - 975 = 1,375$ of play money in a city that's stupid cheap to live in.
So off the top, yea, 43K looks like peanuts (and in some cities like Vancouver it IS peanuts), but where I'm at, in "big" city Saskatchewan, it's quite a bit of coin.
This can only be good news for the rest stop whores... Download the porn to get you all in the mood for free while resting at the romantic, misquito flocked crosswalk illuminated rest stop sign, and then charge 200$ for a handjob.
Brilliant.
because their OUTRAGEOUS fines are totally in line with their OUTRAGEOUS pricing structure, and they're trying to maintain consistency.

Just a thought...
I'm guessing you haven't seen Team America: World Police?

The government strips us of our civil liberties in the name of "security", why can't we spin the table around on them for a change?
Finally, a sequel to The Wizard!
considering 40,000 jobs were going to be axed thanks to the saving grace of IT, is it possible that this enormous crunch was intentional? Prove that if IT craps out those 40,000 jobs become invaluable?
"yea yea, great, get the fuck out of my face..."*shove*

He more or less answers your questions regarding new OS's in one of the essays... it's short, but a good read.
