  3. From the Author on Sony Aibo Hacks Increase Functionality · · Score: 1

Okay, well here's the original thinking behind why I posted this: Now, I don't have a mansion or an aibo, but I am literally slavering over the possibilities: -Telling your dog to play your classical music playlist in the living room -Telling your dog to go take a picture of what's going on on the porch and sending you a picture. -This is the best one, I just conceived of an entire scenario, whereby a friend rings the doorbell to my vast estate, the door unlocks and my voice says "Come in." However, when my friend opens the door he is greeted by the aibo who, transporting my voice over wifi, says "I'm in the back, just follow the dog." Now, I don't have to tell you guys that this represents a huge shift in thinking, where an intelligent pet executes commands by voice and they are done, like a magical genie. I cannot wait to be an eccentric rich person, so that I can indulge these sordid fantasies. I only hope to implement them before my children can afford this functionality at the local radio shack, and regard my strange fascination with rolled eyes and understanding nods as they realize their father is in the initial stages of geriatric decline.

That's exactly what I want to see happen. The major problem with the internet is that it relies on centralized DNS systems. As private companies take over this function with localized customization, the entire system will grow more robust and less tolerant of shenanigans.

  10. In defense of immersive gaming sound.... on What Happened To PC Gaming Audio? · · Score: 1

First, I will concede a few points:

    1. On a regular pc game, 2.1 and regular stereo quality is really about as immersive as 95% of people will ever need. Not to mention the fact that there's something ironic about having a tiny little 23-inch screen and BIG FAT AWESOME 15.3 sound system.

    2. Most games really don't do a very good job of utilizing advanced sound options, and that includes some pretty awful canned sound effects.

    3. Creative is only at the top of the heap because no one else wants to be. No self-respecting audiophile would purchase one, and no gamer on any kind of budget should be trying to purchase one, when there are far better offerings from lower pxed competitors.

Now, the meat of my argument. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy ZX2 and a 6.1 Cambridge Soundworks set. I bought these for my computer when I didn't know what I was doing, but it's not the end of the world, and here's why:

    1. I am now in charge of media for my church, and a decent sound card with the right software can really go a long way in an amateur operation. Creative isn't the best, but in this case, they hit the right px point.

    2. I am now getting into building an amateur home theatre, complete with a sanyo plv-z2 projector, and a custom made HTPC. In this case, I could really spend a lot of money on a component system, but since I already have the parts I am going to be able to take the much cheaper route and simply mount my 6.1s in the ceiling, hooked to the HTPC. This, combined with an 80-inch HDTV projection screen, will most certainly create an immersive experience for both gaming and viewing, and given my current hardware, will surely impress everyone save the lone audiophile, who can never be truly impressed.

Now, there's been a lot of hating on computer audio, but given the convergence factor of pc's and entertainment centers, it's not worth throwing away your cards just yet. 3.

But the virtue of the free market is that companies who don't perform to the customers specification soon find themselves out of customers.

My vision of the internet of the future is one of multiple "internets", with localized DNS servers providing localized roadmaps to the World Wide Web. If you don't like the way your current DNS provider is servicing you, simply switch DNS providers.

I know I'm being pretty general with an idea that would be very difficult to implement (at least right now), but as computers continue to grow in power and efficiency, I believe we'll see greater flexibiliity in firmware/hardware that will allow us to make these choices. Additionally, assuming hardware compatability, DNS routing would be the most impossible thing to gain a monopoly on. There would always be competition for the best service/price. In the end, if you really don't like the system, you could always do a little private diversification yourself and reinvent the entire internet in your garage. Protocols, packet handling, what language to use? That's the greatness of the private market.

Unfortunately, you lack all understanding of how a market economy works. When you pass protectionist laws, you only benefit one small group of people at the expense of everyone else. When manufacterers source jobs to the lowest bidder (et cetera paribus), everyone benefits because the cost to make goods becomes lower and real income increases for all individuals.

Real income is related the actual buying power your money wields, rather than just the number amount of your cash.
