Why is linux unthinkable? I have a smartphone, sound card, and multi-card memory reader that I wouldn't be able to use at all if I switched back to linux. I suspect that there are many people who face the same predicament that I do. When I am at home I don't want to go searching for and applying patches to get my hardware to work properly. My karma is going to go down the toilet for saying this on Slashdot but Linux won't be ready for the masses until hardware vendors feel an obligation to write, maintain, and support linux drivers. And please spare me the "buy supported hardware" nonsense. The average person has already made an initial investment in hardware why should they be forced to purchase new hardware just to run an OS when they should be purchasing an OS to run their hardware.

My home media server runs on gentoo (Yes it finally finished compiling), all of my work and personal files are on an ubuntu file server along with images of my base windows install for when windows craps out on me. Despite all of this I run windows xp for my day to day tasks at home because all of my existing hardware already works on windows. When I can just plugin my smartphone and have it sync with kmail/evolution/thunderbird/pine/whatever and not have to decipher some poorly written manual that MAY OR MAY NOT work after an hour of editing config files that MIGHT be in the correct directories depending on how Distro X has their packages configured (wth happened to LSB??).
I agree wholeheartedly VISTA is a total disaster but linux isn't the great savior for desktop users, not yet.

Just to entertain himself he would allow himself to get the crap kicked out of him on purpose until he had almost no energy left then proceed to taunt his opponent while he blocked their every move and slowly killed them.

We were all amazed as kids and enjoyed every second of it, how it will play out with adults I'm not sure; but it will only work if they can find gamers who do things that are sufficiently unique and amazing that people will want to watch for extended periods of time.

It is more likely the theory of man made global warming that a lot of people, including myself, have a problem with. It is very obvious the earth is warming, you would have to be a fool to deny that. The problem is that you have idiots claiming that man is the cause of global warming as if it is an irrefutable fact when the reality is that no one really knows for certain what is causing global warming. To make things worse the topic has become so politicized that getting honest, unbiased, and meaningful research on the subject is next to impossible these days. It also does not help that the "leaders" on either side of the man made global warming issue tend to be fanatics which makes them even less credible.

Personally I'd like someone in a position of power to say the truth we've done a lot of research on the matter and the evidence suggests but really don't know for certain nor will we anytime soon. I would be much more likely to believe a group who spoke in such terms instead of the nutcases who have turned the issue of man made global warming into a religion with anyone who doubts or opposes them labeled a heretic.

  23. Re:What Torques Me.. on Credit Industry Opposes Anti-ID Theft Method · · Score: 1

I hate to rain on our parade but lending institutions especially mortgage banks do not like to lend to shoppers because too many recent inquiries on your credit report can bring your score down your significantly. It has nothing to do with them not wanting competition if anything it would make it easier for them to compete because they would know what programs another bank offers.

The algorithm that is used to determine credit score assumes that people who are looking for credit (shoppers) must need it and therefore are a greater lending risk, thus the decrease in score. Generally this is true, people who have good credit typically do not shop around because they are inundated with people offering them low interest rate credit. I can only speak from the real estate mortgage side of lending because that is all that I have experience in but shoppers are a banks worst nightmare.

The reason for this is that in order to sell a mortgage on the secondary market a bank may have to run the persons credit a second time right before closing to ensure the borrower has not taken on any large debts or had a drop in their credit score between the time they applied for the loan and closing. So a person who, hypothetically, had a 640 score may have a 630 score after running their credit with multiple lenders and they no longer qualify for the loan program they applied for and in many cases they no longer qualify for ANY loan programs.

There is an easy way to get around this if you want to shop around. DO NOT have multiple lenders run your credit score, get your FULL credit report (not a customer copy) through one of the BIG three agencies (Equifax, Transunion, and Experian). I believe they offer this for a small fee on their websites. Take a recent copy of your credit report to wherever you intend to shop around. As long as it is less than 30 days old it should be acceptable at any lending institution. Do not do business with any bank that says otherwise because they are lying, provided that you have a FULL copy and not a customer copy of your report.

On a semi-related note do not run your credit through freecreditreport.com they are just an info harvester and you will just get massive amounts of junk mail from lenders.
