John Oliver is English:). I know we have many different accents here in the States, just not one like his!
The show he now hosts, which was formerly John Stewart's show, is built on making fun of government. Normally the subject matter is the conservative right here in the US (as they seem to do more batshit crazy stuff) but they will bash the liberals as well.
I don't have cable anymore so I cannot watch the show.
I don't recall the public universities claiming 99% job placement rates.
We need quality trade schools, like ITT use to be. I'm in the mid-west, there are so many manufacturing facilities that cannot find enough trained machinists to keep up with production.
My brother is an ITT grad, doing very well for himself. He probably would be on a similar career path had he gone to a 4 year university as well.. it all comes down to the effort the individual puts in.
Out in the real world, once you have just a little bit of experience the name of the institution on the degree no longer matters (to most).
I wouldn't want to work for a company that would even considering a retro-active review of a person's credentials that were not forged. They are hired, all that matters is performance. I wouldn't care if their degree came from Shithole University, if they performed well then good for them.
I don't like the US's role in the world. We do need to mind our own business quite frequently.
What I really don't like is how foreign nationals come here and pretend their country's history is flawless.
The unfortunate reality is that the US government isn't learning from European mistakes.. nation building just doesn't work and will almost always lead towards constant instability and power struggles.
I think the intention is the replace the shingles and have your roof made out of solar panels.
I've had this same idea for a long time. There's no benefit of asphalt shingles other than the relatively low cost. If you could replace your roof with a solar panel system that #1 protected your home and #2 provided a significant amount of power generation I wonder what the total cost of ownership would be. At current electricity rates, I'll pay about $20,000 over the next 20 years to the electric company. I would also pay $15,000-$20,000 every 20-30 years to get new shingles.
That's attributed more to greed and activist investors than MBAs. Yeah, I'm sure some are MBAs.. and some are not. The assumption that every decision that results in lost jobs is due to an MBA in a suit seeking to pump up profits is silly.
I guess we should round up all MBAs and make them wear patches and all live together in a ghetto, right? That will solve all the problems.
I'm an engineer with an MBA. Nothing in my studies ever suggested to cut corners for short term profits. It was focused on long term growth strategies and employee development. To remain globally competitive you have to build from within. The companies that are off shoring functions will most likely find themselves in more trouble a few years down the road. Yes, there's a cost analysis that is done (and I do that daily as an engineer). Would I pay someone $60k+/year to add chlorine to a pool? Probably not.
Wages are often tied to supply and demand. It's unfortunate that STEM related salaries in the US have not trended with inflation but that's a result of a stronger global workforce. It's not the MBAs deliberately holding down salaries.
I was watching the Olympics over the weekend and numerous times they mentioned someone had dumped in hydrogen peroxide by accident, neutralizing the effects of the chlorine.
Maybe it wasn't an official statement but the cause was known.
As the AC pointed out, she mis-understood the questions since English is her 2nd language. And I really couldn't just look over and ask her to stop talking, that would make it even more suspicious.
I would agree with you had they been the ones to set it up. Taking an existing site and keeping it running during an active investigation.. yeah it's in murky territory but it's also a way to gather data.
No comment on the legalities of what occurred, though.
After visiting Niagra falls about 3 years ago (we drove from Detroit across Ontatrio) with my family and my wife's family (Japanese), I got held up at the border.
It must have looked a bit strange for me, a white guy, to be in the car with 3 Asians and 2 young children. My wife speaks English well but the Canadian accent threw her off. She was giving answers to questions that were not being asked.
I was convinced I was going to be detained for suspicion of human trafficking. Luckily after about 10 minutes (and numerous glares from the border guards) they let us continue on.
My wife is Japanese and we use Line all the time to communicate with her family. It first launched in Japan but was actually created by a S. Koreans subsidiary (though they had collaboration with Japan, China, US engineers).
All that being said, it's no more secure than Skype.
Have you ever learned a brand new word then by coincidence you start hearing that word on a weekly basis? Truth is you have always heard that word you're just now paying attention to it.
I see this as something similar. The focus is on the Clintons because of what has happened in the past. Maybe there are some links, maybe there are no links (I honestly don't give a shit, never been a fan of the Clintons). Everything looks suspicious because everyone is paying attention now.
The truth is always somewhere in the middle. 50 people killed to protect the Clinton secrets? That's laughable. Did a couple people fall on the sword for the Clintons? Probably... maybe these people actually did commit crimes and the guilt took over. Clintons probably have no souls so they don't feel guilt.
I guess in 2015 the number of industries dropped that require a joint-venture.. mainly because China was starting to lose a lot of manufacturing business.
So technically you can set up in most industries without Chinese investment. If you want to cut through the political red tape, you get Chinese investment.
If your goal is to manufacture some widget to sell to the US, you probably won't have much issue. If you want to sell your product in China, you're going to need a JV because they don't want the profits to leave the country.
The chance that this guy drove 300 miles SPECIFICALLY to watch a couple scenes with the Joker involved is ridiculous. That's his own damn fault he traveled such a distance. I have only been to London but I'm willing to place a wager he passed a few theatres closer to his residence while making this trek. Sounds to me that he didn't like the movie, regrets being dumb enough to travel so far to see it, and wants to use this law to make things financially right for him.
But, he does have a bit of a point. The production company can say that those scenes were cut at the last minute, after the trailers had been created. In the US, the few trailers I saw did not include the scenes he described.
Spoken like someone who has zero knowledge of business in China.
They do not allow wholly owned foreign subsidiaries, any investment must be at least 50% China owned. They do this to keep profits inside China and to rip off (borrow) technology for any company that does it. It's not just American companies, it is everyone.
China's 1 billion potential customers is hard for companies to pass up. Exporting to China is very difficult because they will price you out of the market. Your option is to give up 50% of control or stay home.
I've been to Brazil multiple times. There are plenty of beautiful locations and the people are fantastic. Rio is the face of Brazil, but other than the famous beaches and Christo and Sugar Loaf mountain, it's a nasty city.
I feel bad for the people because most of the developed world is now making fun of their country. They do have plenty of issues and maybe some will improve with the visibility. Politicians made promises they couldn't keep (go figure) and the corrupt IOC took enough bribes to make it worth their while. Now the citizens, athletes, and fans will suffer.
I think Brazil could have done a wonderful job had it not been Rio and if they could utilize many of their existing structures for events. It might be better for everyone if future games are held in a country, not just a key city.
Do you always call others a troll if they offer a perspective different from yours?
I haven't read enough about this to go one way or the other but it is quite possible Charter has a legitimate beef. Just because we think the terms are ridiculous to begin with doesn't mean it's right for the municipality to pick and choose which parts of the mutual agreement to adhere to.
He might be from the future and his time travel device broke during his last trip. Now he's trying to pull mankind ahead, technologically, so that he can fix his craft and return to his timeline before he dies.
Hmm.. maybe I should create a screenplay about this.

How do you "distinctly recall" something happening but fail to provide any useful details?
I distinctly recall Justin Beiber being a douche-bag but that doesn't mean I think all Canadians are like that.
By the way, how would you even enforce a law like that? I'm breaking a law by telling you to vote for Trudeau again?
BSOD?

We're having such a good time...

Here is Trump in a nutshell.
I can say whatever I want and when it's received negatively, I was just joking.
When I don't get my way, someone else is cheating.
He's a joke of a human being. He represents the worst of the US.
