    I spent my first few years as an undgrad studying aerospace engineering. You don't build a lander to survive a trip to Pluto if your mission is the moon.

    Unfortunately he has absolutely nothing to gain from proceeding further with litigation. He fought the good fight and didn't cave in to their demands. He got them to back off and created the framework for others to suceed as well.

    He is a businessman, not a saint.

    If they used hiragana (phonetic) it would be quite simple. I believe there are just 71.

    My wife is Japanese and her family name is so rare that almost no one would know how to pronounce it by reading the kanji. Common names like Yamamoto can be read literally, my wife must always include the hiragana with her name.

    At work I have so many passwords with different requirements and different reset schedules that I had to turn to the low tech approach of writing every one down on a post it note and hiding it under my calculator on my desk. I do take my laptop home every evening.

    Interesting enough, email is the only program we no longer have to sign in to each time, and it also does not time out after inactivity like every other program. That is the place where most sensitive business information would be located. All they would need to do is crack my windows password (while also knowing my login name).

    I wish I could log in to windows and do one authentication to unlock every other program I use routinely.

    I bought a Samsung DLP tv about 8 years ago that advertised 1080p (and even had it printed on the plastic framing around the screen). The tv, however, could not handle 1080p and maxed out at 1080i.

    Mid-east fighting, 2000 years and going strong. Yes, clearly not having peace there is Obama's fault...

    I just don't get this bravado from some Americans that think we should be directly involved in every conflict around the globe. Ironically, all these global conflicts are a huge drain on the national treasury. Can't cut the budgets and join a few wars at the same time.

    Only the higher security prisons are private, I believe. The county jail where I am (somewhat rural Ohio) is still staffed by county employees.

    Honda's Clarity (which has been available through a special limited lease program for a few years now) uses the hydrogen to power an electric motor, not an internal combustion engine.

    It's basically an electric car that replaces the battery stack with a fuel tank. As we know, electric vehicles right now are limited by battery technology. In my opinion, what Honda is doing could easily transition from hydrogen to battery stack if it becomes quite clear that battery techonlogy "has arrived".

    And you are erring on the other side of the spectrum. If your car needs such an extensive repair before it hits 100k miles, you're doing something wrong (accident or not following standard maintenance protocols) or you got a lemon.

    Most cars these days should hit 150k without any major mechanical failure. The Japanese forced US auto makers to step up their game over the past decade.

    I was in Japan when a group of school kids approached me. They had to ask an English speaking foreigner some questions as part of their school assignment.

    When they asked me where I was from, I responded "United States". They had no clue what that was. After a few moments of awkward silence, my wife said "America" and instantly they understood.

    We call ourselves Americans because United Stateians is rediculous.

    To out pedantic you - they should use 'North American' or 'South American' if they want.

    Everyone in the world refers those of us who live in the USA as 'Americans'. Maybe you can buy some time to speak at the UN to propose a global change.

    What they do during their off time is their business. The submitter is worrying about potential issues at a job he doesn't even have.

    I'm not suggesting he needs to go out and participate in activities that make him uncomfortable.. but the guy is already making excuses to not fit in.

    I am in my mid-30s.. got a wife, kid and house to all take care of. I can still hang out with friends/co-workers once in awhile. We don't do crazy activities.. but a round of golf or a beer exchange are quite common. Ages range from mid 20s to late 40s.

    It's not a question of giving up and wanting to curl up in the corner to die. If I can't sustain a reasonable quality of life in those "extra" years aided by modern medicine, I don't think it would be something I would want to do. Living to 100 but having to spend the last 10 years being tended to by a live-in nurse.. I don't see that as worth it. Once I lose my ability to be independent I do not want to artifically extend my life.

    You totally missed the point. Sure, medicine can extend my life, advances have been doing that for centuries.

    Just because medicine can keep my body alive an additional 20 years does not mean I would welcome that if my mind is gone or if my joints are all shot or if I have to rely on a mountain of daily pills or therapy to get going. I look at it as a Quality vs Quantity of life.

    Of course I want to live a long time and experience many things. I will do what I can to extend this to the point where I can do it independently.

    I don't know about how anyone else feels but I do not necessarily want long life unless I can maintain my youthfulness. I'm 34 now and still stay active but obviously my body is already on the decline (comparing myself to myself at age 24). I do not expect to stay in peak condition when I'm age 80.. but I also don't want to live 40 more years if I have to rely on someone else to do standard tasks

    If they determined he wasn't drinking or doing drugs, they'd probably let him go. My dad is a retired cop so maybe (well, probably) there is some bias on my end.. I grew up around most of the guys on the department, sure there were a couple pricks but most of them were just normal guys when off-duty. Despite popular sentiment, they aren't out there looking to ruin someone's day just to get their rocks off.

    The amount of paper work that needs to be done to write a speeding ticket is prohibitive to most cops to be frivilous. Maybe they'll pull you over for going 5mph over the speed limit at 2am just to verify you're not drunk. 9 times out of 10, if you are not drunk, you go with nothing but a verbal warning.

    I don't think the survey is very fair for the question about the Big Bang. I consider myself well informed and try to keep at least a layman's understanding of scientific breakthrough. I understand the concept behind the Big Bang but cannot understand most of the hard science behind it.

    Am I willing to take someone else's word just because? I don't possess the knowledge to verify their research. In my opinion, most people should be uncertain because it's not something we're ever likely to prove.

    We have 'L' shaped desks and the high traffic carpet. If someone comes to my desk to ask a question, I use the wheels to back away from the computer and the rotation feature to turn and face them.

    It would be quite annoying if our chairs did not have these features.
