  1. Re:100% backwards compatibility not needed on PS3 Price, Compatibility In Question · · Score: 1
You do realize how many people trade those consoles in for $20 worth of credit at GameStop or EB, right?

Every time a new console comes out, the market is flooded with older ones. Hell, it's even happened with variations - people trade in old PS2s for slimline models, or GBAs for SPs and, eventually, for a DS or Micro. It doesn't seem to occur to most of them that the return on your investment is so incredibly poor that you're better off just keeping the older system and games in case you'll ever want to use them again.

People are stupid. You can't forget that. They will trade in the old consoles, and then they will complain about the fact that the new ones don't support every obscure game that they own.

You know, it's an interesting question. You know, do you want it to be a holographic experience that you play in your bathtub? We could have made it different...

    You're comparing ferrets to Spain.

Microsoft isn't talking about having Apple and Sony release products specifically FOR the 360. What they want is to have the 360 be compatible with what you've already got - with your iPods, with your Nikon cameras, with products that aren't neccessarily all Microsoft-branded. At no point in time did Allard - or anyone else - encourage the competition to make 360 exclusive devices, although I'm sure they would love to see that happen. They're preaching openness; whether or not that's what we'll end up getting is still very much up in the air.

Besides...what's the point of having a media center sans the media? Microsoft doesn't make cameras or music players, and trying to enter those markets at this point would probably be just as costly as the first Xbox eventually was.

Part of the reason that GameStop bought EB was because of their giant international presence, something the GameStop chain couldn't boast. There is zero reason for the Canadian/European EB stores to close, and I've heard absolutely nothing about GameStop closing them.

    One reason: they're ugly.

I don't mind ads that are clever or funny. Heck, I've been known to sit through commercial breaks in hopes of catching something that's actually entertaining. If I can get a smile or a chuckle out of it, it was worth my time.

I have yet to see a web ad that I've enjoyed. Giant flash monstrosities that cover content, hideously garish banners with flashing colors, movie trailers that slow down the speed of content that I actually want to see...

If web ads stopped sucking so much, I'd be willing to let them go.

Admittedly, I live in an area with a lot of game stores and an (at times) oversaturated market. Still, it's definitely out there, and it's affordable to boot - EB had it for under $10, last I checked.
