You like the 1st thing you experience, and nothing else can live up to it.
I'm not a big game player, but I did go out and buy Resident evil for the PS2 when it came out. I played it only superficially. When I went to se the first Resident Evil movie, I thought it was good, actually. Having only played the game lightly, I thought it matched up nicely. However, I went to the movie with a friend who had played the game pretty extensively and he hated the movie, saying it wasn't at all like the game.
Most major urban areas have public transportation which covers 95 or so percent of the land area. This is just a more intimate version of good old public transportation.
Show me a robo version that can take me from any point in the city to any address in a forth-ring suburb and I'll be impressed. A 4 Km track is no different than two subway stops in any city.
If we're going to worry about which side scrollbars should be, we should also worry about minimize, maximize and close bottons. True, you can already do that with the single button on the upper left side of any application, but for consistency's sake, it should be, well, consistent.
Lernout & Haupsie made many programs for the language learning and translation industries. I was using L&H Simply Translating back in 1994.
Transoft, Starview were also around. And there are now a handful of very well known companies (SDL/TRADOS, Passolo, DejaVu, etc.) within the translation industry that continue to do this, as well as other more focused things, such as fuzzy matching.
In any case, most everything available from the early 90s foward has offered this.
Please do! Put some pants on, instead of those swim trunks you think pass for shorts. And for god's sake, put on some real shoes. We're tired of looking at your nasty toenails hanging over those flip-flops.
Alas, that's a whole other can of worms.
Please note: The above was sarcastic, and in no way was meant to attack you personally.
...I would just buy a very ordinary business traveler looking bag
I use an ordinary dark blue soft-sided suitcase and am randomly selected every time. In the last three years that I've traveled, whether inside or outside the country, my luggage has been searched every time.
The paranoid in me might suggest that there is some massive database(s) being cross-checked, as:
1. I purchase a lot of items (mostly books) from overseas off the internet.
2. I'm a translator, and the majority of my business is done with overseas clients, hence my phone useage is mostly international.
Ask a bloke on the street if they've heard of Linux. If they're not in IT, web design, or a related field chances are they have not.
Here in the US, IBM, Dell and HP all run ads on national television - I've even seen some during primetime - announcing their ability run Linux on their servers. While some may not know exactly what Linux is, they probably do know it's an OS.
Or maybe you think you're one of those few people who are more intelligent than everybody else.
but when someone sits on more than one board (as opposed to a regular stockholder) in the same industry, it tends to cause conflict of interest.
I once worked for an online retailer in their IT dept., and can tell you the board was full of executives from all over the retail industry. Lots of back room dealing, scratching each others backs. When one company cuts a deal for another company in the same business, it's usually not with good intentions.
One of the main reasons for this difficult decision is my deep disgust for the state of affairs within computer graphics research community and my inability to fit well within existing system.
You know, up until a couple of years ago, I worked my entire adult life (about 20 years - or so:-)) in IT. Call it mid-life crisis, whatever. I needed a change. I was disgusted with corporate idiocy, among other career-specific reasons.
I completely changed careers; although I had some studies in my new field (translation), I got another degree to "re-establish" myself, and set out to work for myself. I can honestly say I've never been happier. Is it because I changed careers, or because I now work for myself? I don't know. All I know is I'm a much happier person, and (I'm told) more pleasant to be around.
I'm one of those people that firmly believes that humans are not meant to do just one thing in life.
I'm quite certain he'll find something that gives him more satisfaction, if he hasn't already.
Instead of saving your documents online, why not save them on a thumb drive? That way you don't have to worry about actually having the program, and your data remains with you. True, you have the extra step of making sure your data is only saved on your thumb drive, but I like the idea of just carrying your data and not worrying about specific programs.
I still watch TV, but do so much less than I used to, and have been using the internet for a lot of my "video on demand".
Both the BBC and RAI offer a LOT of their programming online. I'm talking news, sports, dramas, comedies, old movies, variety shows... you name it. I'm sure there are other television/radio combo sites that do much the same.
But I don't think we're likely to see any of the major networks in the US do this. The whole advertising infrastructure is very different.
The marital bed has survived his-and-her book lights and the sushi-laden bed tray. Can it also survive computers that tether their owners to the office or make the bed the workplace itself?"
This is just stupid. Really.
Yes, of course it can survive. Most reasonable people in relationships realize that there is a need to separate work from personal.
Therefore, they'll most likely have a separate work area, which could even be part of the living room. Hell, if you've got kids, you probably already have an area of the family room/den set aside for the family computer.
If your argument is that mp3 players are commodities at this point, you've been proven wrong by the very story you're writing about.
Just because Dell couldn't make it work for them doesn't mean that mp3 players aren't commodities. Look around. There are a TON of other brands selling mp3 players cheap. Not in ipod form factor either. Think USB flash players.
And they sell too. There's a whole lot more to this world than the US.
You don't mention which model you have, but the latest models have MUCH better battery life. The earlier models (particularly the 5500) did have terrible battery life - with a wifi card I was lucky to get 40 minutes. 5600 improved to about an hour and a half.
The new C1/3x00 series, however, goes for a good five hours of constant wifi use. As mentioned somwhere in this thread, these newer models aren't sold directly in the US. You have to get them through a distributor, which will import and convert to English. I got mine from dynamism.com, but there other distributors out there, including for Europe.
You have a media server or a file server that really doesn't depend on the internet at all.
About a year and a half ago I upgraded from B to G and, while that's still not good enough for wireless video, I saw a significant speed jump in backing up my files, transfering files from one machine to another, etc.
You may not think that it's even worth taking file and media servers into consideration, but their use is increasing.
Increasingly, after visiting one of these sites earlier in the day (OK, not really Digg), I come back here to read the same thing.
Am I bitter? No, just remembering a time when I could come here and read about things I couldn't find anywhere else on the net.

If you have kids, you know that this is absolutely NOT true. " But Dad, EVERYBODY has one except me. I'm a total freak because of it!"
He's legendary.
Yes, of course.
Does nobody pay attention to ANYTHING anymore?
Highly recognizable keyword(s) + question mark = highly qualified answers from first posters who never made it past the first sentence.

Seriously, if they've not listened to him after repeated attempts, they'll most likely not listen to him face-to-face either.
They best he can do is keep good records of his communications, because when something happens, he'll be the scapegoat.

No. That's just how you interpreted it based on your own belief system.

They should be "blatant" and "laziness".
In the VERY first sentence of the summary, not even the article, it says:
"Reuters is reporting that AOL Chief Technical Officer Maureen Govern has resigned from the company."
Seems people can't even manage to get beyond the job title. Maureen isn't exactly an unknown woman's name.
I can't really see how Google helping to create ad contect would equal the success of the Geico ads, but...
In any case, what you're suggesting is that Google be come an ad agency, and I somehow don't think the shareholders would go for that.
Then again, all they really have to do is create one killer ad that gets everyone talking and that could change people's minds.
