The work is not a simple black and white tasks, I just simplified for the slashdot post. As 90% of my time is spent inside multiple terminal windows (where the real estate comes useful), it would not be helpful to add every detail of what my work entails.
Other tasks involve the use of vmware, supporting h323 videoconferncing with gnomemeeting and generally doing a bit of everything. My IT department actually realise that more screen space can increase productivity and providing a better working environment breeds better work..
We do a bit of everything round these parts & it'd bore you all to detail the tasks.
This type of service been available in the uk for a few years now with shazam, it works reasonably well for currently popular songs, fairs a bit oddly with some older stuff though.
Has anyone experienced the iPod kernel panic?
I formatted both my computers to Tier with musiuc backed up on them on the iPod only to find that as soon as I connected the ipod, I got the BSSOD[1]. As the iPod is full to the brim I think it may have been to do with the spotlight searching index.
[1] black shaded screen of death;)
I use o2s basic online deal with my laptop. Its evil bad and wrong but I then use Corkscrew to tunnel through their proxy. Its not great (times out after 10mins [1]) but the deal I have has lots of free access, and it keeps me connected when i'm away for a real connection.
I've also used proxytunnel not sure which I prefer.
[1] Fine when using GNU Screen on the remote system
Are processors really the problem with windows machines? Windows just swaps to hell, and the CPU is sat there doing nothing.
Get a gig of ram and things will do a lot more in 90% of situations.
The ability of google to group things from the same site together is a gem, which allows a better chance to find what you want, IMHO. (Where you get a little link to click to see more results from x site).
So my search for some well crawled site brought up first page of links from the same site.
And come on, the colour isn't exactly easy on the eyes.
Instead mod non-reg links and article texts as FUNNY if they are not posted AC, this brings them to the top and adds nothing to the posters karma score.
Yeah! Mod me as FUNNY, its the only chance i'll get:-)
I often use wap for googling for facts & checking my emails when its my only cheap net access (when i'm not at university).
You can use google's excelent wml conversion facility to view the text of lots of web pages.
Handy when bored, but not really functional for major tasks.
Right now I have 4 alarms - two on the T68, and two on my alarm clock, and the alarm clock is across the room. I still 'sleep' through them.
I do the exact same thing, and have come to the conclusion that someone needs to build an alarm that has a switch which can be mounted in the shower and activated by water..
it so big that you can't just call out or walk for 10-15 seconds to talk to somebody?
No, I live in a tiny student house, when we are too lazy to get up and get changed, we can chat in our tender state in cumfort. Great for getting code written..
But it could well take up much more than 2 hours of your time waiting for it to load/respond with dated hardware.
Windows XP is great compared to 9x, but it doesn't half hog system resources.
I would suggest that the camera may not be quite the time saving device you would hope for.
The flash on a camera needs to be exactly right to produce a good readable image. Ok, so a scanner is slightly slower, but you will get a good quality document copy every time, which is suitable for use.
Afterall, if the image isn't captured to a good quality, there is little point capturing it at all.
ipods seem to be in short supply at the moment, I ordered mine on the 20th October, and it has yet to be assembled yet.
Its astonishing apple can't keep on top of supplies.
I've had 2 emails from them in the last two weeks telling me it will be dispatched in the subsequent weeks.
Way to go slashdot editors.
Everybody is human! And this way this article has changed into "divx free version cleverly hidden"...
Does it not highlight the fact that not-everbody spotted it.
I also have a mythtv setup at home, however i'm not sure watching tv at work is really the way to increase productivity :)
Actually I had the exact same problem...
Gentoo Screwed XOrg up one day, and I lost a whole day reconfiguring it, went to debian testing which works and I love apt.
Actually, the linux desktop was surprisingly pain free.
Debian testing worked with all the (dell) hardware out of the box.
Indeed.

I have actually used it for mp3 tagging too

Smooth...

(for the lazy man like me)
In the UK, your upstream is limited to 256kb/s, so it could have upstream possibilites.
Although i'm not sure wirless would be the best way to do it..

Learn to type, idiot.
Yes, my bad, accidentally pressed submit instead of preview.
I wonder if slasdot readers will appreciate this saving
Something which you could possibly look at is altering the memory cache, i've just spotted this tip here:
To disable the memory cache completely, add the following code:
// Disable memory cache:
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.enable", false);
