I occasionally have my system set "incorrectly" like that... Some amplifiers need a line-level output, rather than the 5v peak-to-peak that can drive small speakers by itself. Although in my case turning the soundcard up too high just causes the amp to start clipping.
Ridiculous? Not at all. Most of my choices of progrms are based on their startup speeds.

In the last year or two, they have been updateding to more recent models, the only result being that you get more errors, faster. Every new Mac in the "Computer Lab" has a large monitor... Locked at 640x480. I can hardly work in there. Strange, because almost no other computers in the building are locked at a certain resolution. And all the random errors and other problems you get from those things are much worse than even the oldest Macintosh computers in the district (Don't know what model they are)

Several local schools around here force everyone but the staff to use Macs, and they are now labled as the 'bad' and 'crappy' OS because the school provides only slow, error-prone, and badly locked down machines that never work correctly. I doubt that any large percent of the children that come out of the local school system will even consider using Macintosh later in their life unless they are again forced to.
I know that Windows and Macintosh definently have these features. I do not have enough experiance with Linux to know weather or not it also has them built in, but a very quick Google search turns up: http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/
Although not quite instant boot, many modern operating systems have 'Hybernate' and 'Sleep' options. These will either shut down the computer but keep the memory refreshing, or save everything in yhe memory to your hard disk so you can completely power down the computer. The second one isn't quite as fast as you have to read the memory contents from the hard drive, but it can be a lot faster than rebooting the machine.
You can often adjust the delay after poweron before the drives spin up in BIOS, supposedly so older harddisks would have time to initialize. If you are having problems with supplying the surge current needed to get the disks spinning, give them all differen delays so to PSU isn't trying to start them all at the same time.
The thing is, there are many areas at the edges of, and even inside, medium- to large-sized cities in Washington with no boradband and some have only ONE dialup provider with local numbers. For some people, its hard to get any internet access at all.
You could use just about any device that can record and play back a sound wave to do this. I think now they mass-produce chips that let you record a short soundclip and play it back. You could use one of these (or any mp3 player, or even casette player, etc) to imitate a sequence of button-presses from multiple remotes. This could be useful for someone who just wants to watch a DVD rather than juggleing remotes so he can get to the correct screen.
Our landline was completely dead this last winter. No dialtone, no power. Why? The wire was laying on the ground, broken. In several places. Anything that will take out your power has a good chance of taking out your landline as well. Stringing thin copper wires to poles above the ground isn't the most failsafe way to provide a service.
Our cell phone, however, still worked.
Would the fact that they are selling through EBay make someone more likely to buy their music than if the artist sold through iTunes, Napster, or sold physical CDs through their own website, or even Amazon.com?
Using a real domain name in a fake email address will make other people angry. Instead, add.invalid to the end so you do no wase someone else's bandwidth. Instead of someone@somewhere.com, try someone@somewhere.com.invalid .
Our local power company rents out street lights for about nine dollars a month, perhaps you should consider getting one so they no longer have a dark haven in your backyard.
I agree. I have been on the Internet since I was about seven years old. My parents never, ever looked over my shoulder, filtered the connection, or even looked at the history. Instead, they taught me their values, whats good and bad, then let me loose. Parents should be able to trust their children to make the right choices.

Try this. This little program will disable the messenger service.

No, its not just you. I have no poll slashbox either.

As far as I know, independant artists can sell their music through all the normal normal music services, how would EBay give them a greater advantage?

Your average car engine gets only about 20% efficiency, yet many many people continue to ride in them...

A lot of ISPs in America don't even let you run your own mail server, so many people have to rely on other email providers.

You may want to try this minus the mirror.
