I had the exact same machine. It was CGA alright, but the trouble was my dad bought the version with the 4 grayscale b/w monitor. So each CGA color was some shade of gray. Can you imagine the disadvantages of both Hercules (no color) AND cga (really low 320x200 resolution, pixels the size of a house) in one easy package ? Urgh. I'm glad graphics hardware got a lot better, I can still feel my eyes hurting from trying to play games on that monstrosity.

Actually with one of the earlier Kazaa versions (1.6 ?) there was a whole bunch of spyware installed, but it only needed one Cydoor dll to be present to work. All the rest could be cleaned out, the cydoor dll was used to display ads inside the kazaa window so I could even understand why Kazaa refused to work without it. Adaware and Spybot S&D, the two cleaners I'd recommend, BOTH automatically keep a backup of every removed item so you can put it back if something stops working. You can experiment a bit and only put back the few things that are needed. Ofcourse spyware-free versions like Kazaa Lite are infinitely better, but you can still use the originals with a minnimal amount of hassle.

I didn't see a single sobig.f, and now I haven't seen one instance of this new one. I feel left out. Luckily there's still Welchia pinging away at my firewall every minute, or I would get the idea that maybe my connection was down. Yes, I did. And I still do. But I have to admit that while I found their treatment then and now completely unacceptable (while at the same time glad I was in a 'safe' job, lol), I then and still now don't really know how to solve it. Except maybe one thing : force the companies to pay those people (Indians etc) the same wage as us. That's it. That's my whole idea. Granted, this would be hard to enforce, but if it was enforced, then either a) companies decide it isn't worth the trouble and don't move or b) move and those Indians get a lot richer and can afford the same quality of life as the West.

But it doesn't work that way huh ? The companies that are exporting jobs are trying to cut costs. They couldn't care less if the Indians work themselves to death for peanuts, as long as they can cut some costs. It's all part of 'globalization', i.e. the right of big companies to make lotsa moolah and exploit people. Sure, even at the current wage levels in India, it's somewhat of an improvement. But the moment India gets its standard of living up by too much, and the wages there cost too much, the companies will go to the next third world country. And why not ? The only thing they are interested in is making as much money as possible, and they WILL break all kinds of laws IF they think they can get away with it. So with the blue collars we got sweatshops and child labor. Evidently it's hard to make a sweatshop full of kids program the next Windows, but rest assured that right now some sleazy manager is trying to work out if it's possible.

That's why those here who smugly proclaim we should just lower our wages are so freaking moronic. It will not help ONE damn bit to keep jobs here, but because we'll have a huge surplus of qualified workers, the companies will try and use this as a leverage to lower wages anyway, even for jobs that would not be possible to export anyway. Remember, they're out to make huge profits, and they couldn't care less if their workers have problems or drop dead if they can easily replace them.

So I'll repeat my suggestion : force the companies to pay their new Indian employees a real, comparable wage to the western world. If they truly do this, THEN can I accept that this redistributes the riches of the world more evenly. But the way I see it now, it's just a giant cost cutting mechanism, and mark my words : India will have the exact same problem in 15-20 years. I've seen it happen to third world countries that used to attract blue collar transfers, and are now slowly losing their work to even poorer countries. If you don't do something to correct this, it WILL continue to happen.

The important thing for that guy is just to buy low/sell high. And SCO stock happens to be moving quite a lot the last couple of months. Forget about those kinds of losers, they would take stock in Hell itself if that was possible and it was low enough. Trading in SCO stock these days is just another verion of musical chairs. Once the music stops and Darl has to show his 'evidence', there are going to be some greedy bastards that get stuck with the check. That's life, that's how the stock exchange works. Just don't try to interpret SCO ownership as anything else than an attempt to enrich yourself. That's all it is and all it will be.

You would be surprised at the ratings and the number of viewers such live executions would attract. I can guarantee you that deep down, most people are savages, with a thin layer of civilization on top.

Executions used to be public, and they were quite an entertainment, attracting huge crowds and lots of sideshows and festivities, it was almost a modern day carnival. More people than you'd care to admit would gladly and ghoulishly gape at such a spectacle, and the gorier, the better. If you want a reference just take a look at the typical crowds that gather at every minor or major disaster, trying to get a good view of the 'action' and in the meantime hindering the rescue workers. It all depends on random encounters. I do this kind of job for three months now, and I've yet to encounter such a type, though I'm sure they do exist. No, the twenty people that I've serviced thus far, have been ALL extremely grateful that I wanted to come over and have a look at their problem. Apparently in my particular region, almost nobody does this kind of work freelance, and stores usually ask 65$/hour. Right now I charge 10$/hour. Yes, that's cheap. Because I'm not really sure I want to continue doing this, I see it more as a hobby right now. And believe me, if I'd encounter enough of those 'aggressive clueless', I'd think about quitting real soon. But the fact is, I haven't encountered a single one. Of those I worked for, only two or three were annoying.

Usually they were hovering near me while I worked, continually asking when it would be done because they were afraid to pay me one more hour extra. Or they ask a thousand questions while I try to solve their problems, continually distracting me. I like to converse, and I kinda get a good report with most people, especially for a geek. But there are people who will literally yak your ears off and that CAN get on your nerves after a while. Some people tried to use me as some kind of IT teacher, so I had to point out that this would take many hours and many extra $'s. But most people ARE nice, polite, and not too demanding. Yesterday I even got my first tip, from a guy I did a complete security upgrade for.

Why do I do this ? Basically I've been burned out on a code monkey job, and consequently fired. I spent a year doing nothing, but I tried this just for the heck of it. And it does contain a lot of personal satisfaction, if only because of all the computers I leave in a perfectly working state. I like to think I'm doing my bit to diminish the number of virus ridden zombie boxes, attacking the rest of the net, and I do encounter a lot of those. I'll see in about a year if I still want to do this, or if I want to program again.
