So slashdot readers do for grammar and spelling what tho OSS community does for bugs?
Ooooh, so does that mean the Mods are like the programmers?! eek.
"Hey Bill, I thought we already fixed this one?"
"Well it turns out that 3 different programmers wrote the same exact bug 3 days in a row!"
After closely watching the hurricanes and their projected paths develop this year, I've noticed that their predictions hold pretty well... until the hurricane nears land.
Charley swerved just before landfall, Frances stopped dead in the water 60 miles off Florida, and Ivan "bounced" off Jamaica, shifting its path by 500 miles, none of which were predicted. Possibly, none of which are predictable. If you can't warn people where landfall will occur when it takes some non-obvious path, then what's really the point?
"...So if Chewbacca is from Endor, you must convict!... er, I mean acquit! Dammit, how did it go again? Your honor, can we have a little more time to uh, research?"
The X-Box has outsold PS2 on a weekly basis in the past. It's sort of a blip lost in the noise of the whole "100 million units sold" thing. Vaguely interesting, but not really meaningful.
After downloading the single ISO and burning it, I booted into a BASH prompt. This might sound intimidating to those newer to Linux... A little fiddling reviled that the prompt had a few basic commands such as mount and access to Vim.
Oh yeah. If you're intimidated by a Bash prompt, you're gonna LOVE vim.
The US currently runs a trade deficit of $50 billion per month. Do you see this as a problem?
Ostensibly, free trade should rectify the imbalance except that China, who accounts for $14.9b of our monthly deficit, has its currency pegged to the dollar. Additionally, the corrective forces of free trade would involve a staggering readjustment of the dollar (i.e. crash). What steps would you take regarding China's currency, and what is your attitude toward a plummeting dollar vis a vis the $600b yearly deficit?
They foresaw Microsoft pursuing voice rec, decided not to just let them have that as a platform differentiating feature. Besides, they're not releasing it with the intention of seeing it stagnate... they want to see it grow, but they don't want to foot the whole bill.
I don't think anybody here wants all of their searches available to their next door neighbor
One of the coolest things I've seen was a little ticker that WebCrawler used to run that was just a constant stream of random search queries other people had made. You could click on any of them as they scrolled by and it would bring up the results.
Totally anonymous, very addictive. Sad to see it gone.
the world of science fiction is no doubt fiercely leaning towards the political left
Well, they're obviously more fore-sighted than most people. Seriously though, left vs right in the real political arena isn't about ideas. It's about placating the most people for the next brief moment in time.
I mean, we're talking about a populace too busy wiping the grease off their faces to think about how much their obesity will cost their children.
Of course, some left-leaning SF writer might talk about free voluntary government-funded stomach-stapling for American citizens, but does that make it a bad idea?
I feel like I should point out the really obvious anyway... DON'T do this to your monitor! There are capacitors in there that'll zap-fry your pretty little tenderloin even when the monitor's unplugged.
I just finished Red Mars and Green Mars, I'm halfway through Blue Mars, and I've been wildly entertained.
Not only because the dialogue is crisp between interesting characters, but the story is really a fun story set in the Earth's near future... it seems to contradict the point of the entire article.
I smell something rotten in Denmark. The techno-team says "architectual limitations", but watch out when the marketing team says "faster safer internet." That's a dangerous idea.
Maybe porn sites could just set the "evil bit" in the headers of pages that contain child porn, so that the ISPs won't need to guess which pages are the bad porn and which are the good porn.
Pixar's effects aren't that good. Look at Finding Nemo -- I guess some of the shark footage was pretty good, but ftmp they're just swimming around chatting with each other.
They definitely had no memorable explosions, that's for sure.

Just make sure Bush Jr goes to see War of the Worlds, and watch us go on a "pre-emptive mission" to defeat the "terrorist Martians".

Oh No, I found a bug!
"Son, where are you going with that ball and glove?"
"Dad, I just want to go and--"
"GIMME THE DAMN BALL!"
"...So if Chewbacca is from Endor, you must convict!... er, I mean acquit! Dammit, how did it go again? Your honor, can we have a little more time to uh, research?"
Or on the boot-up screen. And then charge us for the early warning. Yeah.

At this point the general befief is that pirates of legend merely sought to share homes, villages and governors' daughters.
Curious, in what circumstance would I not have a reasonable belief that my life is in imminent danger (when someone breaks in)?
Buy a dog.

You can have your dumb gold medal... Sheesh.

"Sawyer... worries that by 2030, the genre may be a thing of the past"
Doesn't that seem a little ironic? I mean, who would actually predict the demise of their own profession?
Oh wait, this is Slashdot... nevermind.

I guess it must not have sold very much.
And watch who piggy-backs that cause.
