    Even with my warm recommendation of Mozilla, I use IE constantly on a daily basis. Mozilla just takes a while to load up on this computer of mine, whereas IE starts up in a matter of seconds... speed is a lot more important on a daily basis than adherence to standards.

    IE loads faster because most of it gets loaded into memory when windows boot; can't you just leave Mozilla open at all times?

    I'm using Linux (Slackware), but when I was still using windows the differences in loading time were pretty secondary to the difference in quality in favor of Mozilla & sons.

    I, for one, think it's wonderful that Microsoft takes such an active interest in fixing the few security holes found in their products. And with such speed! Kudos to you, Microsoft!

    And when it doesn't find what I'm looking for, I use one of the links to other search engines at the bottom of the results page.

    Trying to diminish my dependance on google; they've been getting worse for a while and I've discovered pretty decent alternatives (AlltheWeb, Teoma, Gigablast, etc) -- not as good all the time, but most of the time.

    Oh, and Gnome acts the same.

    On such old hardare, may I suggest you try XFce 4?

    I tried it at first because I, too, have old hardware, but endend up liking it more than both KDE and GNOME (independantly of speed); once it's set up properly and you learn the neat things about it (like switching between virtual desktops with the mouse wheel), it's hard to go back.

    I haven't noticed *any* differences on the desktop.

    Either you have a crazy uber-fast box or just adapted and got used to it too fast; personally I feel the difference quite a bit on my old K6-2 450mhz.

    Maybe you should try booting into your old kernel (you did keep it for backup purposes, right?); maybe you'll notice the difference.

    The only really good distro supporting 2.6 soon is Fedora.

    Slackare 9.1, f.ex, is "2.6.x ready".

    Just download the source, compile and voila! No need to fiddle with the new modutils and such.

    Why wait for distros to do it for you?

    One thing you can do to speed up your system is to dump XFS.

    Man that thing chews CPU like nothing else (for a slight gain in file I/O, yes).


    I've been interested in XFS for a while but haven't taken the plunge yet; care to elaborate a bit on what you say?


    On what kind of CPU does the difference shows? Recent stuff or only on old hardare?

    I think people's time would be better spent raising awareness of IE's flaws and encouraging Microsoft to fix them rather than encouraging people to change browser.

    Why?

    Raising awareness about the defects of their products is Microsoft's problem; personally, if they ask, I'll point people to better & free products.

    Steve Jobs is smarter than Bill Gates. Not only is he giving discounted hardware and software to educational institutions k12 on up, he's found another entrance vector through which to enhance the brainwashing - send in an Agent with a "Macs are more secure, too" line.

    I'm sure Steve Jobs has a lot of pull with the FBI.

    I've never noticed the bias towards Intel from THG until your post. I went through all of the processor summaries from the past 2 years and your right! They constantly praise Intel and never pass up the oportunity to take stabs at AMD.

    One has to wonder if the fact that Intel is spending a bunch more than AMD on PR and freebies has anything to do with it...

    Solar doesn't have to use photovoltaic cells. The solarthermal plants are simple mirrors and water boilers to drive steam turbines and generators. A solarthermal power plant produces almost no chemical waste.

    You can also cut drastically on the cost of heating big building (like they do now in Germany) by simply pumping water through pipes on the roof (the same principle as heated pools).

    No but if you keep it on your hard drive you can keep copying it to the new media. Or when you replace your hard drive do you just throw it away with all your data?

    If we're talking about historically significant amounts of time, my point stands very strongly.

    Maybe for small amount of data it's efficient to just keep copying over and over again to preserve it, but it's not very practical to keep copying over and over the ever increasing amount of data on the intrnet.

    I was talking about large scale (since we started talking about historians), not just about the backups of one individual for a period of 40 years or whatever...
