That is my ideal world too. When designing my web site I had to make a difficult decision. That was to put hacks into my code to support browsers such as IE6 while also supporting Mozilla Firefox or to just go all approved standards way. I decided to avoid chunking my code with hacks and support Firefox and the standards. I figured that IE6's user base will dwindle as they upgrade to IE7 eventually. Good thing is that IE7 supports my site much better. Not fully though. Also, I really wish M$ would just stop supporting IE and just use Firefox... lol what a wet dream... Or better yet Give up on Windows!

I too used to work at a high school. I was the main IT guy working there fixing, configuring, moving computer furniture around where it was needed, setting up computers and throwing out old computer parts. I got a bunch of good parts like 40GB harddrives that would otherwise be in the trash. Yes I had it good but I also had the older IT guys that were usually cold, unfriendly, and seemed like they were out to get you fired or something.

This was about 6 years ago when I worked there. I was stupid and curious at the same time. I was nicknamed "hacker George". Mainly because I knew how to exploit their security holes. I used to report them to the staff thinking I'd get more pats on the back.

Got myself fired because I disobeyed some staff and was trying to check out what else I can crack/bypass/whatever without their knowledge... What did I learn??? Obey the rules of your employers and whoever is above you... no matter how tempting it is to break them. Really is not that worth the trouble. I lost the trust of many people. Also, I stole hardware... Good thing I did not do anything of that sort now otherwise I might be in jail or facing heavy fines or something.

Not going to give specifics about what I did for obvious reasons...

So your saying that if the publisher is selling physical copies to the end store the publisher gets all the money anyway because the end store pays for lots of copies? If its download only then the publisher only can rely on people purchase->downloading the game?

You are aware that you can make a CD/DVD of the content you download right? For example... I bought BF2 AF (Armor Fury) and EF (Euro Forces) through EAs download system (like steam but it sucks). The content downloaded and I installed them. Then I burned the content that was cached from the downloader to disc. The content has an installer and everything that you'd normally get if you bought the disc from the store. And for HL2 and other steam downloaded games you can burn the content to disc. That would be the ever so wonderful physical copy you are talking about.

Well, I guess for some the service is inconvenient and pricey. Personally I opted out of buying the Orange box package. Instead I purchased what I wanted separately. So far I bought HL2 EP2. Later I may purchase TF2 and Portal. Also, what are these "gifts" you talk about?

  16. Re:Physical Product More Profitable? on Manhunt 2 Could Beat Ban With Digital Download · · Score: 1

Agreed. I am very satisfied with Steams progress with the on-line content distribution method. Very convenient for me as a consumer and cost cutting for the company. You can also buy other non-steam games and even launch non-steam games though steam. Eventually I predict game sales on-line will keep on growing and the physical box sales will diminish until it stops.

I used to be pretty sceptical about buying the game on-line without getting a physical box, manual and game media. Now I just burn the content onto either a CD or DVD. This way when I want to play HL2 on a different system I can install the steam client then copy the content from the DVD/CD into the install folder. Saves a shitload of time waiting for the download to finish. I've also done the same shit for BF2 SP/AF/EF.

    That's just my 2 cents.

So she issued me a new activation code. No further problems after that with activation. Personally I was not to happy dealing with this issue. I can't imagine my grandfather dealing with them. I myself as a Linux hobbiest have installed Ubuntu Server edition and was not happy with the results. The parent poster brought up 2 points that stand out for me. That is the vomit output when booting and the fact that the login prompt shows up when booting. Then when I start typing I sometimes see "starting ssh" or something like that. Also, when I brought the computer on the network it made the whole network very slow within 1 minute. Although I am not sure if this was Ubuntu's fault as I it could of been my network card or something hardware related.

I eventually end up installing Debian 4. Once I got the system all installed and configured it worked great (and still running after a few months). Really happy with my Debian server box. Also running a box with Gentoo. Gentoo can get a bit tedious with configuring and sometimes long compile times.

I may be going a bit offtopic but I hate it when my Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn Desktop installs a kernel update because it updates grub and keeps the old kernel boot line in grub. Now I keep a backup of the latest grub config that I like so I can overwrite the new grub generated file with my backup then update it. Previously with Ubuntu Edgy Eft Desktop I had compiled the kernel manually. It still wanted to install the generic kernel crap. Now I've just decided to use the generics with Ubuntu. For my Debian and Gentoo server boxes I custom compile the kernel.

    Just my 2 cents...
