Keep drones out of U.S. airspace. If this is done, there can be no crashes of drones into manned aircraft. As a no-cost benefit, the government won't be able to use drones to spy on citizens.
It would've been some ironical justice for what was done to innocent children and women in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I think all U.S nuclear weapons should on completion have been pointed straight upwards and fired immediately. It would've been the most appropriate use.
I've read one of Truman's considerations in nuking Japan is that the Japanese were starving to death about a quarter of a million innocents each month in the various countries the occupied, so you might want to consider that fact in your rush to judgement.
I have used Linux personally and professionally since 1996. I have immense respect for Linus and his amazing operating system.
Because I have a lot of experience with the innards of operating systems, last year I began a personal project to [re]develop a small part of TCP/IP that has been excluded from the network stack, with the idea of convincing the Linux folks to merge this bit of code back into the stack.
However, after seeing numerous reports of Linus' behavior, I ditched the project and decided to go into ham radio instead. I don't need anyone screaming at me, irrespective of the quality of the code produced.
The ham radio community is generous with their time and knowledge and I haven't met the first screamer.
Not being a Silicon Valley resident, I can't directly address whether "a Grace Hopper [could] Get Hired in Silicon Valley," but I heard her speak at two conferences and I was the recipient of one or two of her "nanoseconds."
She was an impressive speaker, full of grace (no pun intended) and wit, and an interesting juxtaposition to many of today's well-known technical people.

If the people above you are corrupt or inept, it isn't impossible to change the world for the better.
Gonna get my ham license this summer. I may try to take the technician and general tests the same day. I'm not sure this particular technology skill will help keep me employed, but it will surely help keep my sanity.
Researchers have devised a means of making sound transmit easily through rigid surfaces, including walls. The process relies on creating large holes in a wall. Researchers have discovered the large holes do not require that either side need be covered with plastic wrap, thus making the process more environmentally friendly.
Are we headed down the road of emulating the DDR (the German Democratic Republic)?

How about we ban all drones in the U.S., irrespective of who is flying them? How about we quadruple the penalties for anyone in any government agency who is caught operating drones? If we don't stop this now, there will be no end of drones.
Do we really want a weaponized police state in this country?

Understood, not a problem.
I fixed the slight overlap with "\vspace*{0.25in}" prior to the "\lettrine{T}{he theory..." line.
Thanks for the post and the feedback. Ten years ago, after having learned LaTeX, I took a vow never to create another ms word document as long as I live and have managed to keep that vow. I'm always looking for useful additions to my LaTeX repertoire.

With well over 10,000 warheads for over 20 years, I think the number of accidental detonations was zero.
http://www.nrdc.org/nuclear/nudb/datab19.asp says the number of US/SU/UK/FR/CH nuclear weapons reached a maximum of 65,056 in 1986.
AFAIK, zero accidental detonations since 1945.
...if the krysterons...
...had trigger[ed] some of the shaped charges.
I think you mean krytrons.
Has it been made public whether the last switch would have ignited all the triggers or just some of them? It makes a big difference.
These were fusion not fission weapons.
Fusion weapons are triggered by fission weapons.
Finally, your title, Protective Active Links, should be Permissive Action Links.

or are these guys trying to reduce knowledge to idiocy?
when this is not nearly a non-story.
Make sure the person leaving knows you'll buy him or her a beer or two when you have a question you can't figure out on your own in reasonable time.
Interesting that they chose a Boeing a/c rather than an Airbus!
Which begs the questions: Who is the puppeteer? Why don't Americans do something about it?

/. article. Man, how I miss the old /., when knowledgeable people posted technical stuff worth reading!
Thank you, AC, for posting this interesting old
and ms still can't write decent code!
This was likely at the request of the NSA so they could download all our traffic quicker.

The short answer: who cares?
The long answer, after considering the new CEO zapped all her remote workers: who cares?
Dude, did you not see what happened to the shark in the first Jaws movie?

You missed one: the markup to print $ is "\$". The markup to print \ is "$\backslash$". Why isn't it a nice, simple "\\"?
