Supposedly there's an unrelated problem with UUNets ATM backbone. This could be the source of all the slowdowns... (I heard that on #userfriendly, so who knows how accurate it is)
First of all I don't know of any broadcast networks that have pay-per-view movies, they're all on cable, which you have to pay for in the first place. (kind of a nit pick, I know)
But the big difference is selection. If I turn on my tv right now there are 2 movies I can choose from. If I drive to Blockbuster they have about 1000. Where do you think I have a better chance of finding something I might like?
Hit the Next Page link at the bottom. It's a story about a guy crashing his car into anti-terrorist gates at Downing Street and the police kicking in the window and dragging him out. Of course cops here in the states would probably have shot the guy...
Anyway, it's more interesting than this tripe about contract cracker data thieves.
Give 'em a listen. It's listener supported radio, the djs are all volunteer, the music varies pretty widely (mostly alternative/modern rock, but thats what I like so...)
Most games may not be limited by bandwidth, but latency is a huge issue for them! You seem to be implying that I'll get the same game play experience playing Q3 over a 28.8 modem as I do on my school's 100baseT LAN, which is not true.
Modems introduce all kinds of horrible latency (especially with compression and all that crap turned on) and just plain suck for gaming.
Hell, I heard somebody brag once about being able to read the Titleist logo and count the dimples on a golf ball, but that's millimeter resolution -- that doesn't seem likely.
I've heard comments to that affect but I believe they were talking about imagery from aircraft, specifically the SR-71 (which they claim is no longer in use).
At my school (RIT) every dorm room is wired with 10Mbit, every apartment 100Mbit. The entire network is switched and connected to the internet via a multiple T3 (I believe) connection.
Except that the stack is generally built the other way (at least it is on an HP calculator). In other words, typeing 3 [enter] 5 [enter] gives you:
3 5
Then when you hit + it adds them and the stack says 8. Note also that you can shortcut this by typing 3 [enter] 5 + which has the same result.
I love RPN, recently the batteries in my HP 48G died in the middle of a quiz and I had to use a TI-85, I was so lost! I love being able to leave things littered all over the stack and swap them around and do things with them and compare them.

Anybody else notice that *W*indows *I*nternet is in capitals? Coincidence or conspiracy, you make the call!
if /. sucks so much why do you read it?
(karma be damned, I'm not posting anonymously)

This looks pretty cool, but I couldn't find any actual pictures of the system at work on their site. Does anyone know where there are any?
I believe (could be wrong) that carmack uses SuSE when he uses linux.
AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH
Well are they brown? Yes? BOMB THEM!
(Note this from a George Carlin act satirizing American Foreign Policy and is not meant to offend or demean anyone. Laugh. )
word up G, good to see some tight homies on Slashdot.
Sweet. I need to go to Budapest.
Is that anywhere near Texas? I'm going there tommorrow, maybe I could swing by Budapest.

Hell we didn't even get an East Coast (USA) tour! I wouldn't expect to see the bus crossing any oceans any time soon :)
[nt] == No Text, get it?
That last sentence makes no sense to me whatsoever. I guess you proved your point...
Just a thought, but maybe you should put a line with just three dashes or something at the top of your .sig, just so things like this don't happen :)

Let's just say, it rocks
I think we can safely say this was meant to be sarcastic, why does it get a -1?

-Ragnarok
So if I feed it raw meat one a week and keep it hained to a tree I could have a robot dog that visciously (sp?) attacks whoever comes near it?
Cool!
