Actually, AC, you're kinda right. Windows NT/2K/XP/Vista is still a single-user system. Though you "can" run WTS on top of the sytem, the OS was never designed to be multi-user or play well in networked environments.
    My bad.

What I like is that people are becoming more aware of the vunerabilities in these systems, which include Windows NT/XP/Vista (a single-user system subverted to multi-use) and Linux/Unix/Mac (which are multi-user to begin with.)

First, I'd say, "get on the list." :-)

On a serious note, you do want to make packages available for the major distros. If you don't want to do it yourself, have buddies make packages for their distros and send them to you. I suspect you'd cover most of your bases with just a .deb and a .rpm file.

I do wish that we could all use one package like the Windows peeps do, but that will come eventually, I believe. I've noticed a few initiatives geared towards a unified package system for all distros. I know there are those who refuse to install pre-built packages, but for newbies like me, I much prefer them to having to run configure/make/make install.

I can see some of the points here. However, for most applications, I do not go about the ./configure, make, make install routine. I simply load my app manager (YaST), choose the app I want and it is installed.

I think the KDE and Gnome desktops are very usable with a few minor tweaks. As I often mention, my 60+ year old mother uses KDE just fine. And, hey, she's not gotten any viruses or adware.

Now, I realize that the *nix desktops are not perfect and there are some serious hardware issues, due to manufacturers bending over for big Bill, but these things are slowly changing.

  8. Don't get the 'blow to linux' issue on HOW TO: Convert a Mac into an x86 · · Score: 4, Interesting

I still don't get the hooplah over this in terms of Linux usage. I see the two as being very distinct. Yes, I know OS X runs a BSD (?) variant, but it is still a vendor product. Even if I could run OSX on a whitebox system I probably wouldn't, since I know the backup and support for is going to be superior to any that Apple (single vendor) will give me.

Given that one of the major selling points of Linux (aside from the stability and lack of virus attacks) is the ability to be choosy with vendors, I can't imagine someone trading in Vendor M for Vendor A. If I were a network admin or a CIO, I'd be looking at being vendor free as much as possible.

Just my $.02 - whatever that's worth these days...
