The problem I see here is that there is a group trying to put together a "standard" for writing to "Linux". However, what is Linux? Is it the Kernel that Linus keeps? Is it the CLI that runs many server apps? Is it the GUI that I run at home?

I think, until a Steve Jobs or Bill Gates comes out with a killer apps with a corresponding toolkit that takes over the market, we'll be stuck in the same boat.

  4. If the apps run.... on Palm OS To Run On Linux · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have been a Palm fan since I got my 3Com Palm III back in the '90s. I recently bought a Tungsten. It is simple to use and has a brilliant interface. (If only they'd bring back Grafitti I.)
If the old Palm .prc apps run without much of an issue, and if they keep the interface similar, I don't really care what OS is being used - Palm OS or Embedded Linux. My main concern will simply be integration with my (now six year old) data files.
On the flip side, I'd love to see a Palm-created synch tool for my home machine which runs almost exclusively on SuSE. Right now I have to use the sometimes flaky KPilot and I get issues with AvantGo.

Considering that they are drawing the ire of MS and even Sun/Redhat, I think they're wanting to get their ducks (penguins?) in a row and be ready for anything. Novell is positioning themselves to once again be a big player in the server (and desktop) arena.

From what I've read of Novell Desktop, it sounds like a true windows-replacement for many corporate entities. They've really thought it out and already have proven where it works and where it won't (financial departments).

    Good luck Novell!

They can go ahead and sue a non-profit organziation. I wonder what kind of goodwill that'll bring.

    Actually I fit both molds.

I do PHP and use "static" mySQL in code blocks for my personal sites.

For my day job, I tend to use ASP/VB and perform most of my calls within massive stored procedures - often times creating multiple temp tables. Generally my databases have >10M rows in the primary online tables (not to mention some archive tables), so stored procs work well there. I use MSSQL, DB/2 and IMS interchangebly.

I tried out the stored procedrues in PHP5 and wasn't impressed. Since I'm coming up with a new online app in PHP/mySQL, we decided to go with "quasi" stored procs where we have a php page that can accept "parameters" and generate the SQL code accordingly.

That is the scene I've found at my mom's school, my wife's school, my aunt's school and at the university where my wife teaches. It is unfortunate, but I can see the reason. In most cases the choice was made due to a perceived need to "get on the internet" and provide software. Since fewer people thesedays know Macs and even fewer know about *nix systems, they went with big contracts to have Windows PCs installed. The argument was that there would be better support for the Windows PCs. Sadly this has failed to pan out. At least here in California, there is little money to be spent on follow up so the PCs just languish. On top of that some stupid short-sighted politicians feel that standardized testing is a good thing and have shifted focus from real-world skills (writing, coding, graphics) to bubble-filling on test sheets. As such, the PCs do very little and recieve no support.
