I've posted about this before, but it is such a great tool it really needs to be included in everyone's regular mozilla/firebird setup along with mouse gestures.

Flash Click-to-View helps get rid of those stupid blinking flash ads. These are the ones that get around most ad-blocking software. Combine this with adblock and you have a very effective combination that gets rid of almost every ad out there with minimal configuration (just add the offending domains or some keywords to adblock's list, like "*.doubleclick.*" "*.atdmt.*" "*.x10*" "*ads.*", you get the idea).

  4. Re:Democracy works? on California to Require Paper Voter Receipt · · Score: 1
THis system doesn't represent the middle people. What it does is get the canidates to make one or two stops in the largest cities of the states. All they care about is getting more of the vote than the rest of the canidates. Those living in rural areas never get addressed, or talked about because they take work to get to. Why should you bother if you are effectivly going to get their votes anyway when the state's electors vote?

A popular vote would compleatly throw off current caimpaigning practices. Because those who are in charge are the ones who are campaigning, there will never be a change unless there is a huge public outcry that can't be silenced by replacing the voting machines or a similar measure that realy doesn't change anything but looks like they did.

The industry makes their money off of people replacing old formats. Now that pretty much everyone has converted their old collections to CD, that stream of money has pretty much dried up.

It really was only a matter of time before a new format with one or two new features (and a few glaring flaws to be fixed in the next format) would be introduced as the replacement to the compact disc.

With a capacitor or even a small battery this could be avoided.

What really got me thinking is the increasing popularity of disc brakes on bikes. I would think it would be fairly easy to mount some magnets to the disc and use it as an alternator. Combine it with a simple rectifying and regulatory circuit it could be very usefull. With no additional moving parts to break, it would outlast generators that rub the wheel and those built into the hub.

  8. Re:What about toxicity? on Batteries Continue To Suck · · Score: 4, Interesting
NiMH's are better than NiCd's because they don't have large amounts of toxic Cadmium. They are also better than Alkalines because they can be reused so many times.

A good set of name brand batteries with an overnight charger will quickly pay for itself. The only problem with them is that they will run down on their own if you don't use them often, which is why I use alkalines for remote controls. So if you remember to swap the batteries every week or so, to make sure you have a fresh set in there you should be in good shape.

Whatever happened to those bike lights that would pull power from the rotating wheels? With the low current that LEDs require I would think such a system would work well.

In the bar near the begining of Episode IV, after Luke and Obi Wan leave, Han gets stopped at gunpoint by a bounty hunter. The bounty hunter sits Han down and says that Jabba the Hut wants his head, but if Han would give him the same amount as the bounty he would forget he saw him. During this little discussion Han slowly gets his hand to his blaster-pistol thing.

    Here's where things change:
In the original film, Han simply shoots and kills the bounty hunter.
In the New Spiffy-Edition films, the bounty hunter fires first (missing from five feet away) and Han fires back in self defense.

While this makes Han a "nice guy" because he doesn't kill anyone unprovoked, it doesn't really make sense. #1: Why would a bounty hunter kill his bounty, and therefor lose out on collecting any money? #2: What caused the idiot to miss from across the table? #3: What does this change add to the film?

Basically people harp on this because it is a pointless and not well thought out change where no change was needed, which most people feel applies to all the changes in the Spiffy-Edition.
