That would be me. I ride the bus every day, and it is quite a nice change of pace to watch one of my dvds (ripped w/ pspvideo9) every now and then. And when my wife and I went to Las Vegas, we watched a couple episodes of 24 season 1 while on the plane. Yes I do play games mostly, but I love it's movie capability as well. And judging from the success of UMD sales in this country, I'm not alone.

  6. Re:Just like SEGA on Xbox360 Pricing, 2 Models at Launch · · Score: 1

They never said there won't be ability to save a game with no HD, they just said it won't include a HD. I'm sure there is an alternative way to save a game that will come with EVERY console, like a small flash device or something. I'm thinking the HD will just be for additional content, music etc. If you want to store that stuff, you'll have to buy a HD. I don't see it as a big problem.

  7. I don't see this as a huge problem on Xbox360 Pricing, 2 Models at Launch · · Score: 1

More than likely, there is some alternative storage included by default to allow for saved games, like a large flash device. This would be something every developer can code for and assume is there for game saves (and for backward compatibility with certain "popular" games). If you want to rip music, download extra content, etc, you'll have to buy the HD. Simple to me. The only downside I see, is that no game would now include the ability to play ripped music, because they can't assume you have the HD. But the 360 may be getting around this by being able to autonimously play music apart from the games? Would require some sort of mixer setting to be able to adjust comparitive volumes...we shall see.

  9. Re:What's with all the kneejerks? on Xbox 360 to have HD-DVD, Eventually · · Score: 1

Maybe not right this minute, but very soon. Players are due out by the end of the year, and studios are gearing up for hd-dvd releases. Check out the text from this article:

CES 2005 While games publisher Vivendi Universal was touting its support for the Blu-ray Disc format yesterday, the movie business in which it owns a 20 per cent stake, Universal Studios, was announcing plans to release 16 HD DVD titles in the US.

It was joined by Paramount, which will ship the first titles from its initial 20-strong list of HD DVD products in Q4 2005, and by Warner Bros., which plans to lead the field with a catalogue of 50 HD DVD titles, again commencing Q4 2005.

Warner's line-up includes titles from Lord of the Rings producer New Line Entertainment - though the studio did not yesterday commit itself to offering those movies, in either their cinema or extended versions, on the new format. The 50-title list also include HBO productions The Sopranos and Angels in America.

I tell you now, if Warner puts LOTR on HD-DVD at the end of the year, I will have to seriously think about getting an hd-dvd player. Do I want another piece of equipment besides my xbox360? Not if I can avoid it. I'd sure like it if they'd release the 360 with hd-dvd from the get-go.

  10. Re:Better Things To Do... on House Calls for Investigation Into Rockstar Games · · Score: 1

Actually I would consider myself on the conservative side, and I consider this whole situation laughable. I fail to see the sudden concern over our children seeing some dry humping, when all through the game people are being killed left and right. Which is worse? I tend to think this whole thing is no more than a parenting issue, and government should stay the hell out of it. The game already had an M rating, which means over 17. If a 17+ year old kid has life long problems over seeing video game characters go through the motions, are you telling me any 17+ year old hasn't seen much more graphic detail in the form of downloadable content? If a kid is technically adept enough to unlock the content on GTA, they most certainly have downloaded their share of hardcore porn off the net. So I fail to see where the government feels it's going to help the situation at all. It is parenting 100%.

    >Until you actually say "On sale on [insert date here]", just shut up - we'll be a lot less skeptical that way. I do believe that is what he is doing, shutting up about another date. He mentioned early in the article the mistake of promising too much. I think if they announce a date again at this point, it is all but on the shelf. I'm actually interested in this product, completely depending on pricing options and what you get of course, but I'll be very interested in that announcement. He's right, there are a hell of a lot of games that fell through the cracks simply because of bad launch timing. Sometimes nobody sees really quality games because nobody hears about them due to being drowned out by another games launch. I'm anxious to see the list of partners and games available. I'm looking at my xbox library, and I've basically got a $50 game every month since it's been out, and I suspect that most of us are close to that. What if this service is $30/month, with instant access to a buttload of quality games? I'd certainly be thinking about it. They need the marketing also or it will die no matter how great it is, and great marketing sometimes can simply be word of mouth.

  14. Re:As opposed to Sony? on MS Worried About Meeting 360 Demand · · Score: 1

I really don't think MS would deliberatly underproduce to "sell out", that would be the ultimate in stupidity. They know there is a limited time window in which to establish the biggest xbox360 user base as possible, and that is the time before ps3 launch (and before the inevitable hype machine). The only way to maximize this is to meet demand. If someone has to wait too long, ps3 thoughts just may creep into their heads, and MS knows this.

There weren't a lot of 3d accelerated titles at the time. I have no doubt Quak34 will be of excellent quality. I just hope the rumors are true, that it will be an xbox 360 launch title. I'm more console FPS nowadays.

I am 99% sure of this. I was contacted by MS about a contract job opportunity in test engineering for xbox testing of "RF peripherals", and they also mentioned the next xbox will wirelessly network to your home lan. A friend of mine working as test engineer over there is the one that clued me in to the opening, which is all about RF testing. He mentioned they were in "panic mode" in trying to make the end of the year release, apparently there was still quite a bit of testing to get done. I have no doubt they will though, MS will not lose, they have too much money to throw at winning.
