    You say that a "government works for whatever they are governing." What *are* they governing, if not the *people* within their designated area?

    I'm not under the illusion that I must always agree with my government's decisions, nor they with mine. And compared to a business employer/employee relationship, we don't get as much flexibility in which government 'works for' us. But (in a democracy, at least), the theory that a government is for/by/of the people still holds true.

    Algae does produce oxygen, but after it dies and sinks to the bottom, the bacteria that decompose the algae deplete the oxygen in the water.

    Did I miss something, or was this hardly a review? Seems more like a few questions posed, a couple paragraphs of off-the-cuff analysis, and voila - it's an article. More has been written in the /. comments already than what was contained in TFA.

    It really is a big problem for surrounding neighborhoods, like you said. There's a low-rent highrise apt bldg near a grocery store in my area that was fined by the Fire Dept a few years ago because there were so many abandoned grocery carts clogging up the hallways. Just another example of reality being weirder than fiction!

    On the other hand, if they sign people up with an unlimited data plan, they may be more than happy to have people pay for their data, but use someone else's bandwidth whenever possible.

    You're thinking about normal people, but I'm thinking especially of executives and designers (or worse - executive designers!). These people a)would never stoop to read the manual b)don't have time to worry about such technical details as heat dispersion, and c)refuse to accept any limitations whatsoever on where they choose to put their stuff. Sadly, these were the very same people most likely to buy the cube.

    The cube was well designed? Tell that to the users who tried setting a folder or book on top of the thing, only to have it shut down due to overheating. I especially loved the one that would shut down every time someone touched it.

    But I agree with your other points. And didn't Apple create Graffiti, the handwriting recognition used by Palm?

    Interesting article, showing how even as the national authorities tighten the reins on internet communications, people in China still make use of the internet to expose corruption & apathy within their local governments.

    One of the items stolen from her mailbox in 2006 was a CD statement that included her SSN. Hasn't California (if not other states) banned SSNs on mailed documents for a few years now?

    I've found that a lot of web developers just don't realize which items are truly platform-independent, and which ones are not, until they test them and find out that some break. Formatting can be temperamental, as well. Just because a site is perfectly functional, doesn't mean it *looks* as good on other platforms without some adjustments.

    I don't disagree with you - the blatant nationalism gets kinda old -
    though a little engineering/science competitiveness certainly beats lobbing missiles at each other, right?

    I suspect the current mood also has something to do with the months of reading about the 'failure' of American space shuttles, and the saving grace of Russian resupply missions. Next year it'll be something about the failure of the German-built communications systems, and thank God for the British-built semaphore flags.

    I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Are we sending our kids to secretarial school, or are we teaching them to think? I used AppleWorks to type papers in high school, and wrote them out in cursive before that. Who the heck writes in cursive anymore (except grandparents and elementary schoolkids)? But amazingly enough, I have *somehow* managed to get jobs and be a productive member of society.

    But I think if you really dug deep, you'd find that most scientists would greatly prefer working in scenic northern Illinois rather than in Europe. It's so nice and ... flat.

    Definitely, especially if you have a fairly small bathroom, where the sink is right next to the toilet.

    Closing the lid also does a good job of muffling the flush noise.
