  1. Security before boarding plane, not enteringairport on MIT Student Arrested For Wearing 'Tech Art' Shirt At Airport · · Score: 1

Let me get this straight, they arrest her for thinking a light-up hoodie is a bomb at the _information_desk_ in the airport, but had she gone to a train station, a bus station, a Red Sox game, a Patriots game, movie theaters, museums, aquariums, or any other event with thousands more people around, no one would point several guns at her head? If some lady at the information desk asked about my bracelet out of ethernet wire in a condescending tone, I'm not going to tell her how to make one. I doubt she would even understand it. I only think about airport security when I'm actually taking a flight. That's when I leave my knitting scissors and swiss army knife and personal water bottle with water in it at home. Otherwise, I'm bringing them to the airport to wait for Northwest Airlines late planes. If airports are so worried about the security of people who aren't flying, maybe they need to have security screenings OUTSIDE of the airport. This girl was entirely justified. Her rights have been trampled.

I think you're right on track, and I agree with you. All of my professors were the same age as my parents. My mother was steered into a career as a Home Economics teacher! How are you supposed to get a science professor out of that track? These days, out of all of my friends, workers, and acquaintances, I know I am the most logical of them all. I know I'm the best at math. I know how to shave valuable seconds off of a process, and I have the drive to do it. (That said, I'm not the best at tax law!) I really don't believe all the made up effects about these brain "natural" differences. There are scientiffic studies made up to try to explain spatial differences, but again, I think they can be attributed to environment. I was brought up with barbie dolls and toy trucks, and damned if I can't shoot a .22 with the best of men. Girls are given more attention when they are younger, and there isn't a lot of attention to be gained from a career in economics or math. What kind of scientiffic mind cannot understand this outcome? It seems very plain and simple to me! Ignore your daughters a little more. Don't let her talk on the phone to her friends every night. It worked for me.

I think the show discourages everyone getting the same results. Alton shows you what can be varied in a few recipes, but lets you know why it turned out well in the first place. Those are the variables you don't have leeway with. Makes sense to me because I'm a programmer, and I work well with variables. The cooking/mixing is just compiling, and sometimes you need an accelrator or something. Cooking, just like any art, is only an art because someone has a high level of mastery of the fundamentals. This show displays the why of the fundamentals, so we don't have to go through 30 flopped souffles, and continue to do a dance to the souffle goddess for the ones after the good one.

  8. co-workers without a good math base... on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 3, Insightful

..i never want to touch their code. usually it lacks basic logic. the programmer/designer usually does not have a good grasp on other mathematical concepts either. this is true for even simple business logic. the code is usually inefficient...in my experience anyway. the math really helps you to deal with thousands of processes working together, as well as potentially avoiding deadlock by looking at things on a grand logical scale. again, just my experience. take the math.
