I'm not saying they're not right about the NSTA being in Big Oil's pocket, but An Inconvenient Truth didn't have much in the way of science in it as far as hard numbers go. And without numbers, all of Al's pretty graphs don't mean anything. If my body temperature increases .000000001 of a degree, steadily year after year, I don't think it would amount to much. I'm not saying the science in An Inconvient Truth is wrong, it's just that the movie doesn't give any hard numbers to relate it to. I'm sure they're out there, but if I'm a science teacher and I'm going to spend valuable teaching time showing a movie, I want everything to be put together for me.

As long as we're signs bashing, let's not forget that the movie was utterly boring past the first 20 minutes. The pre-release marketing was good, but the film didn't live up to it at all. And the message was about the stupidest I've ever seen - everything happens for a purpose? Do we have no freedom?

I did see The Village, and though it wasn't perfect, it was still quite good in my opinion.

I'd have to say the worst movie I've ever seen is A Christmas Story. I just wish the stupid kid would die, and that TNT would stop playing reruns of it.

  12. Re:Understand the Source Perspective on Open Source a National Security Threat · · Score: 1

Some good points, but I think the original story misses a major flaw with software use in government applications that seems to apply here.

Any software, closed or open, has to go through months, sometimes years of testing. The software being used by the government is often 3 generations behind what 's marked as stable. Any bugs fixed usually have to be in house, because the pathches or the updated versions of the software hasn't been approved for government use.

Personally, I think this makes the case stronger for open source versus closed. More use of open source would force different implementation methods and might just get more eyes looking at the code, hopefully making it stronger.

There are two reasons I can think of that this sort of system wouldn't be ideal: 1) I don't want to let MS run electricity through my body and 2) it would be far easier to sync all my devices with a wireless network, even if I had to do something to activate the syncing. Besides, if this patent is in the clear, it will likely be expired before anything significant has been done with it.

I've got to agree with the parent about the danger of the shuttles, not because of the beaurocracy at NASA, but because of the age of the craft. A normal plane goes through enough stress every time it leaves the ground an comes back. Something like those shuttles don't have what it takes to consistently withstand re-entry combined with human error on the ground. This is one case where I see newer as better, even if it is almost unproven.
