Infrastructure on the moon would allow for exploration beyond mars through lower cost of getting minerals into space.
The moon is a good place to be...so is Mars.
Let's tax the top 5% of Americans (income of 1,000,000$/year or more) to the stone age and make them pay for it.
Traditionally wars have been great for economies. Nations must buy weapons, build missiles...pay soldiers, etc. And then soldiers who die are no longer in the work force...freeing up jobs for younger generations.
Not a good system for anything except war profiteers, incumbent politicians, and economics but thats the system.
I agree with much of what you say.
The entire world was fixated on their TVs as America took the first step on Mars. More than anything since all eyes were pointing to one place.
This kind of thing has tremendous power.
And more importantly it was peaceful and nonviolent. A perfect goal for an enlighted society.
Have my cake and eat it too?
While I'm for saving the Hubble AND I'm for going to Mars as soon as possible AND I'm for an American Moon base, I do want them to think things through and plan thier priorities based on Expert opinion.
So...I'm thinking that if this slow down in President Bush's initiative allows for better planning of it...I think its a good thing.
Tell him he's just fine the way he is and that the rest of the students will be working for him in 15 years.
Those of us on Slashdot with jobs realize that it's more important to be comfortable as yourself than meet someone else's perception of who we should be.
In fact, it also works for dating...confidence in yourself is a bigger turn on than a flashy car, big wallet, or "social skills".
So, leave the kid alone you schmuck...stop pushing your skewed world view on this poor impressionable youngster.
well...the data in the database has to exist on disk somewhere...probably a raw encrypted file somewhere...I imagine a backup of this file(s) will allow it to be used in another version of the software...I can't really tell without more research.
In a Microsoft Shop developers will use Microsoft SourceSafe. period. Subversion doesn't have a chance to compete because there is absolutely no
way that it can integrate fully into the.Net development tools the way Microsoft's Own Source
Storage Software is designed to do.
And to be honest...it's not that expensive for one copy per shop.
This is something I've been running into all over the place. I keep waiting for a decent recipe site but usually have to dig around too much and they are so horribly organized that I figure it's easier just to open up my cookbook.
Thanks to original poster.
I admire your family for being open and finding a solution that works for them.
My only concern/point is that it doesn't advance science one bit (and future pain sufferers) if the techniques cannot be reliably duplicated. Hence, its just voodoo/sugar-pill until it can be understood and consistently applied to patients. Thats what makes the difference between science and voodoo.
perhaps...but would you like to be the trainer who has to manually enter the data into the computer?
Or would you rather have all of that information automatically entered and graphs and charts automatically at your fingertips 24-7?
Imagine how many more horses you could train if you had a system where you didn't have to waste time individually with each horse but could tell an apprentice to go do X, based on information on your computer.
24-7 monitoring is very difficult. GPS makes this data flow a lot easier.
I think its a very well thought-out design.
GPS being able to monitor heart rate and rate-of-speed changes and distance travelled. Very Very useful for making decisions on training and work load especially if you monitor many horses through a web-based interface.
Economies of Scale require any competitors to Dell to have massive amounts of venture capital, which prohibits what you suggest. Also Dell has had years to develop appropriate automation, quality control procedures, and customer support systems which would require a great deal of work to be able to compete with a 500$/computer. Of Course, I don't touch on all of the issues involved in a business or even this idea but these are a few of the things that would stop me from even spending time(=money) researching the possibility.
the more you spend the greater your tax cut, so in a time of need you spent 10x your income for that month on emergencies. That month you should get a huge tax break because you invested so much in the economy. This idea is a really interesting proposal though implementation would be too complicated to make it practical.
Also there should be incentives to those people who do save more so that spending 1% of income is bad, and spending 100% of income is bad. but 80% is Very Good.
Example: You need to raise 500$ to pay for public school books. You can tax rice, cigars, or property. One is a staple and necessary for eating , another is shelter another necessity, the third is a luxury that smells bad and kills its user a little every day.
If you reduce my quality of life by choosing to smoke cigars and blow the smoke in my direction I have the right to vote to tax this item more. Democracy at its best.
Alcohol is the same way. Want to reduce drunk driving deaths? Double the price of alcohol and car insurance for males between the ages of 18 and 25 and you'll see an amazing reduction in this catastrophy.
Social engineering is necessary to address some ills that come as a result of living in a free society. Its a good thing(tm).
Not just a favorite of teachers but a favorite of female teachers who point out that "only boys would act this way, girls would never ever act this way".
Your Idea would be very upsetting to Charlton Heston.

While your heart is in the right place...you understimate and insult through your ignorance a very capable sector of our society.
so...um...don't bring your wife.
I'd enjoy the 2 year vacation and she'd still get to spend your money.
Everyone wins.

You forget that Microsoft could buy them out and start the entire mess all over again...

is that really the kind of home you want to live in?
and it is very debatable whether they needed to - definitely, not the second bomb.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. You can't make statements like this without having lived in the time period. The world was a very different place.

Easier to say than do.
