My school has a major contract with IBM, which I think we just renewed this year or last. This leaves me wondering what's going to happen now, since we buy several thousand IBM ThinkPads annually (for incoming freshman and replacements for the juniors... and professors, every other year). I certainly hope that the ThinkPad line won't suddenly plummet in quality with this move and leave us stuck with junk computers. And predictions with regards to quality here?
By the news from Washington it will be seen that Senator Sumner has been savagely and brutally assaulted, while sitting in his seat in the Senate chamber, by the Hon. Mr. Brooks of South Carolina, the reason assigned therefore being that the Senator's remarks on Mr. Butler of South Carolina, who is uncle to the man who made the attack. The particulars show that Mr. Sumner was struck unawares over the head by a loaded cane and stunned, and then the ruffianly attack was continued with many blows, the Hon. Mr. Keitt of South Carolina keeping any of those around, who might be so disposed, from attempting a rescue. No meaner exhibition of Southern cowardice -- generally miscalled Southern chivalry -- was ever witnessed.
Remember: A "Windows" workstation just means "we haven't reformatted and installed something better yet". Why not reformat/reinstall yourself a Linux, BSD or even (!) Solaris (x86) distribution? Heck, you could probably put together a CD which would automagically setup and install that sort of thing, and then you can go back and do exactly the same method you used before.
Why did you switch to Windows workstations? Is it the Windows operating system itself, or is the hardware just cheaper? Surely it's not because of Windows' vastly superior scripting language and abilities! (cough)
And just remember not to obsess over any sunk costs you've already incurred, like your Windows licenses.
Are you talking about Thunderbird here? I don't know- I've never had much problem identifying incoming character sets, since all the sane email seems to come with a proper content-type: encoding listed somewhere. I've seen plenty of spam in foreign languages/odd character sets, I can assure you, in Thunderbird and PINE alike.
Indeed, the first thing local tech support does when your ThinkPad won't boot or do anything is to unplug it, remove the battery, smack the battery around a little (beat it against your palm a few times), and re-insert it- boom, it works. I've been hailed as a genius for doing this on multiple occasions.:)
(Well, I am a genius, but for different reasons. =b)
If you're looking for this on the cheap, you don't even need to pay for Custom DNS... you can get the cheap version and set up a subdomain like, oh, http://fennec.homedns.org (they have a variety of choices, including stuff like isa-geek.com, kicks-ass.com, blogdns.net, game-host.org, et cetera et cetera). It's not as cool as having your own domain, but it's still nice.

People are not corporations, however, and it's by and large corporations who do things like develop drugs, not people.
No! It's the Christmas season, so decorations are in right now! We should all get the new version of Python and decorate our source code to celebrate the spirit of holiday cheer!

I find it highly effective to check the box for "yum" in system-config-services for a standard Fedora Core box on a good connection. It'll update your packages nightly.
not having a job for a few weeks while they find a new one might not be an option.
In economics, "search models suggest that all employers enjoy some monopsony power because workers require time to find better jobs." This article from the Economic History Network encyclopedia goes into more detail, including how the rate of exploitation will be the reciprocal of the elasticity of the labor supply. If the labor supply is elastic (and highly sensitive to wages) there won't be as much exploitation of workers, but if it's largely inelastic (as one might expect from the "naieve young programmer" demographic) then exploitation will be significant.
Grits are coarsely ground corn (maize). Yellow grits or corn grits
are made from whole corn kernels, and include the hulls. White grits are made from corn that is first dehulled. Grits are
prepared by simply boiling. It is similar in texture to Italian polenta (which is
made from ground whole-kernel corn). It is also similar to farina, which is marketed in
the United States by Kraft Foods under the trademark Cream of Wheat.
It is a characteristic food of the U.S. southern states,
eaten either as a breakfast cereal or a side dish at a noon or evening meal.
If Yucca Mountain won't be safe for a million billion years, how about you just use *it* as the "temporary solution" before you come up with a permanent one? Say what you will about the long-term stability of Yucca Mountain, consider the pathetic short-term storage facilites and warehouses where the stuff is being stored now.
Well, that'd actually be quite an interesting challenge, and maybe make up a bit for the "makes it too easy" crowd. And if you miss, deer be outta there. Don't blow your shot.

Well... I'd think it's simple. Which is cheaper for you to run, load balance of failover?
EGS? It's a web comic, hosted by Keenspot... it's pretty freakish, though.

At 16,000 feet? What, do you mean to tell me they finally came out with flying cars? All right!
Yeah, that would hurt their business model more. So... no.

It's different if you're one of the guys big enough to be doing the forcing and the beating down, I'd imagine.

Which gives one pause: how much bandwidth does God have, actually? Probably a fair amount, but yeah, I'd bet Verizon has more...

I'm sorry, I have a patent on the concept of keeping and bearing arms. Please surrender your weapons and munitions immediately.
I don't know about Nethack, but there are a couple of Angband-based ones. Well, there are trailers, at least. :)

Depends on whether you can get all your friends to use Jabber.

Slashcode produces horribly mangled non-standards-compliant HTML (and it claims to be HTML 3.2). Consider something else besides it. :)
