  1. Apple's existence was "relevant." on Apple to 'Switch' to Windows? · · Score: 1

The judge in the anti-trust case limited the "relevant market" to x86 machines. Meaning that Apple's existence or demise wouldn't have affected the ruling (and didn't affect the the appeal much either).

Jobs has said that accepting Microsoft's investment was largely a way to attract attention -- ANY attention -- at a time when Apple was largely being ignored. I'm sure Gates' reasonings had to do with ego... "bailing out" his rival.

It's in IBM's best financial interest to protect WebSphere, and protecting WebSphere means not allowing JBoss to become the de facto open-source AppServer standard. At the same time time, they want to appear friendly to open-source to attract developers.

So, they support Apache Geronimo to compete with JBoss.

Dislike him, fine. Disagree with him, fine. But be rational in your arguments, and for god's sake, try to make them somewhat on-topic.

It's exactly statements like the original posters' and your completely asinine statements about me feeling at home in communistic societies that make real dialog on important issues so difficult.

My problem in that income tax tends to punish success. Sales tax, on the other hand, does NOT. And yes, I don't like the idea of taxing someone for daily essentials, which is why some form of sales-tax refund for "essential spending" would be appropriate. But over all, sales-tax seems to me to be the most fair. Everyone is taxed the same amount on on each dollar they spend. The rich will tend to spend more, thus be taxed more. But there's nothing fair about taking MORE of each dollar earned from a wealthier person just because in your estimation they can afford it.

And yes, I'm aware that wealthier people will tend to invest their money or save it, and thus that money will not be taxed by a sales tax, but that's a GOOD thing. Saving and investing are beneficial behaviors that should be promoted.

  24. Right direction, wrong step. on Napster to Offer Movie Downloads · · Score: 3, Insightful

Some people like watching movies on their laptops, yes, but I would hardly call it a vast market. However, earlier commenters are correct: internet delivery of movies will eventually become mainstream.

So what's the catch? I don't want to sit around for a few hours while my laptop downloads a movie, only to have to burn it to a DVD to watch it on my TV (or plug my laptop in to the TV, making it useless for anything else). What *I* want is the ability to browse, order, download and view movies from my TV.

I think this is where TiVo, or perhaps and Apple/TiVo partership, would kick ass. Being able to buy and download a movie through my TiVo, and when it's ready, I can watch it all I want on the TV... or burn a DVD right there on the device. Or copy it to my laptop if I really want to watch it there.

    THAT'S the way to go.
