"Remember the good ol days with Apples, Ataris, Commodores, Timex Sinclairs (ok, let's not go there)"
Why not go there? The Sinclair machines (in Europe at least) had a thriving community of homebrew coders/hackers which helped form the basis of the open source movement as much as any of the other machines. Even today there is software/hardware being developed around the architecture, for example The Sprinter.
Or perhaps you think it's time for yet another comp.sys.sinclair/comp.sys.cbm flamewar?
If I had a 300GB drive it's likely it would be alone in the box for quite a while (until it was full) so it would be used for apps as well as data. The spec is, however, perfectly adequate for my needs. I'm not in any particular hurry:)

How many of them have a computer because the MS WinXP advert convinced them they should own one?
There's a friend of mine whose mother bought a top range piece of kit a couple of years back. What did she do with it? She dusted it and showed it to visitors because when she sat down and said "I want to see The Sound of Music" it didn't work.
You can't even begin to explain security to someone like that. Who's to blame? M$? The company who built it? The guy who sold it to her? My friend for not having the patience to explain how to use it?
A security feature in itself - who could wait that long to root a box?
Here's the top 20 should it become unreachable

I can only speak from my own experience - I have never required surgery after spilling coffee on myself. Sure, she should have been more careful (holding a drinking vessel between your legs is a bad move in any circumstances) but a beverage shouldn't do that sort of damage when spilled - accidents will happen...
When I was on dialup I used P2P nets to swap files (not saying which files...)
Funnily enough now I got broadband I haven't found myself using this killer app so much.
Indeed. It was found that the McD's coffee was served at an incredibly high temperature and that many hundreds of people had complained of being burned previous to this case. I've spilled coffee on myself before (call me an oaf if you must...) and suffered extensive staining of my t-shirt at worst.
Hundreds of people complaining over the course of several years is a little different to a bunch of obese idiots who believed McDonalds ashburgers are "the healthiest thing in the world." I wouldn't even eat one of them...
I would have preferred someone like Peter Jackson myself, but I agree - don't write it off just yet. On the other hand the involvement of Disney is quite worrying. Well, The Straight Story wasn't too bad I suppose...
Microsoft have a "richer" history of patches not working/breaking previously working functions than any Open Source project I employ. They seem to test their patches the same way a headless chicken tests for the ground - "It's there, lets go!" As well as the ASAP patches, the maintenance patches, which have a greater time-span for testing, have occasionally been disasterous (NT SP 6)... My experience with OSS indicates to me a solid development method with a fast, reliable response to bugs/vulns. My experience with Microsoft is laughable at best.
It's the thin end of the wedge, maaan! What's next? Mandrake employees coming into our homes to extract our blood for sale? It's a chilling vision of things to come, my friends.
I remove the intel/amd stickers on any box I acquire alsmost as fast as the designed for windoze sticker. I have no labels showing on my clothes/shoes (apart from the occasional obscure punk band T-Shirt). I'll still download mdk9.2 - They're obviously in dire straits if the need to include advertising in a linux distro but it's also nice and easy to install & use.
Check out the length of the flag on www.microsoft-antitrust.gov! Might make billg feel inadequate - the longhorn windows logo flag may develop a long horn...
