While there there has been an International Tsunami Warning system in place since 1965, the affected countries were not part of that system and had no mechanism in place to allow for early warning.

NPR has a few good reports on the problem.

Cringely has a rather interesting solution that does not rely on governmental action, though with a serious flaw. It only relies on earthquake data, which isn't necessarily conclusive, nor the only cause of Tsunami's.

I think what the poster was trying to say was that you made the decision to make yourself a more valued employee at your own expense, most likely because you were fairly happy with your company.

Obviously, that's paid off and was the wise decision.

But how would you have responded if before you made that decision, management demanded it of you and hinted at handing you your hat if you didn't comply?

Personally, I get annoyed when I'm asked to devote a weekend afternoon to some damn stupid company picnic...free Jello or no.

  18. Spilled a full margarita on my iBook on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1

To be fair, it was my third margarita, so I was somewhat handicapped. I drunkily reached for the top-heavy glass while cheerfully browsing the web in my altered state when.....OOPS! I figured the computer was a complete loss. But, I was surprised to find that it still worked perfectly, except for a sticky keyboard. I called Apple to find out what, if anything, could be done and to their credit, the service rep told me that while it wasn't covered and he wasn't recommending this, that if I simply took out the keyboard and soaked it for ten minutes in tepid water then let it dry thoroughly, all would probably be well. He was right and the iBook works fine to this day...keyboard and all. Well...I did have that anoying display problem, but Apple eventually covered my old (original white dual USB) iBook under their expanded service extension. True story.

  19. Big deal, where's the USB key? on Maya now Free for Personal Use · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong, it's great that they released the PLE for evaluation purposes, but beware what you're buying. The $2000 buys you a license to run the software on one computer. Not one computer at a time. One computer. Upgrading your motherboard? Buy another license. Contrast this with Newtek's Lightwave which comes with a USB key and both Mac and PC versions. Install it on as many computers as you like, you can only run it on the one with the key. I think Maya is a better animation tool, but I won't buy it because I need to have it on a laptop and a workstation. I can only use it on one at a time, but I'm not buying two copies. Granted, they offer a floating license version for another $500 or so, but that requires an internet connection. What a hassle. Alias fed me a crock of bull at Siggraph that they're having "trouble" implementing the USB version that they plan to have one day. Would that trouble be letting go of the white-knuckled grip that's squeezing the funds out of their users pockets? Just my two pesos.

  20. Re:Already slow on New Dell Clickthrough Software License · · Score: 3, Interesting

Having already decided to never purchase a computer from Dell again, this article reinforced what was clearly a wise decision.

The reason I opted out originally was that Dell ships an OEM version of Windows XP Pro that requires unplugging additional hard drives (to the original PC setup) in order to reinstall XP (a common occurence with developers). Calls to Microsoft garnered the reply that I should buy an "over-the-counter" version of XP Pro. But, I had just purchase XP with my computer. Why was I sold a crippled copy of it, I enquired. It isn't crippled, they replied. Then why do I have to buy another version? Long pause...because it's an OEM version. I sincerely believe Microsoft drones think this is sane logic.

Regardless, the answer was simple. Bite the bullet, switch to Apple and forget applications that don't run on them. I have to say, best decision I ever made. I'll never buy another Dell or Microsoft product again.

See the effect of dicking the customer around, Dell...Microsoft? Hello? Anybody listening?
