Indeed. Microsoft has certainly uped the ante with GTAIV, but it certainly is not the only company to pay for content on its machine. For example, Nintendo created a "fund" to finance development of "inovative" games for the Gamecube using the GBA link cable. Money from this fund was used to develop Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles among other games.

And maybe Nintendo will give the Wii a small price drop by removing Wii Sports from the package. Those could happen, but don't bet on it."

There isn't a good reason for Nintendo to drop Wii Sports from the North American Wii package. Wii Sports is a great hook for selling the system.

At this point, the cost of removing Wii Sports would probably only save a a few dollars or so at most (Disc pressing, manual, and packing). Cutting the system price by $50 wouldn't require pulling Wii Sports to make it feasible. I suppose you could argue that Nintendo could make part of that $50 back by selling Wii Sports as a stand alone game. However, Nintendo would then risk not having a great ratio to new Wii sales and losing the part of the Wii system that makes the whole bundle so easy to pickup with family and friends who have never touched a game system.

Simply put, cutting Wii Sports does not fit with the "Blue Ocean" strategy.

Somehow I doubt Jack would have been in any real danger at PAX. He probably would have slipped in the back a little before the debate started, walked up on stage as a surprise, endurded long rounds of jeers, and then left through that same back door. Gamers aren't actually the gun crazy nuts Jack thinks they are. I think it would have been amusing to hear the gasp when he walks out on stage.

But it's a hostile audience, no doubt. I don't know how hard it would have been to keep them civil (quiet) while he spouted his traditional "games cause people to turn evil" diatribe.

As strickly a surprise guest, you are %100 correct. The audience would gasp, boo, and jeer him until he left.

As a announced guest it is possible, however unlikely, that someone or group could decide to make a spectacle out of the event and protest in a manner that reflects poorly on gamers in general. A worst case senario would be that a deranged person would take a shot at Jack turning him into a martyr.
  10. Possible Reasons - Free of Charge on Thompson Declines PAX Debate, Blames Penny Arcade · · Score: 5, Insightful

I assume there are a few reasons PAX wanted to hold off the announcement.

The first reason would be security, Jack Thompson is a "polarizing" individual, to put it mildly. It would only take one crazy gamer to take any kind of shot at Thompson to make him a martyr. Making the announcement onsite would allow the PAX crew to avoid anyone planning in advance to engage Thompson either with hostility or protest.

Secondly, this would be the huge surprise for the audience. PAX has made it sort of a staple to have some kind of surprise for the show.

Thirdly, pick a smaller reason, but with Jack any reason could balloon overnight. Between now and PAX Jack could go further off the deep end with some of his crusages. Perhaps he would decide to sue PA for something outside the scope of his PAX committments. In either case, PAX would lose the ability to quietly remove Jack.

Any of the three would be enough for me to want to keep Jack on a short lease. However, this could still happen, but I would expect PAX to have greater security at the actual venue.

I concur and add that Rachel is more forgiving than the majority of the internet. She deleted last name of the unfortunate young person pointing out that Google would wash away her name as soon as updated the cache of her blog. Now thanks to someone sending out the DMCA notice Ashley Heyer an undergraduate from New York University (NYU) will have to deal with the fact that a Google search might turn up this Slashdot post that links back to an article describing her alleged presentation of a Fake ID and the subsequent attempts to squash that information.

I have digital cable through them (including about 10 HD channels and on demand), plus 6M/1M internet service. Everything works great, and when I call to make adjustments to my service they are always very helpful.

I feel sorry for this guy moving everything to Verizon. My experience with them has been less than stellar.

You arent the only one, but depending on the individual area the phone or cable lines or packages might be better or worse than other areas.

In my area the cable lines and their associated signal have great uptime, but there is a lot of bleed through from local OTA channels. If a FiOS or FttC option were available I would consider it because the current options leave a lot to be desired.

Between the two major satellite companies, a local cable company, and a phone company everyone should soon have at least 4 options for TV (and phone) service. Competition is good, and hopefully they will force each other to make better product offerings.

    Two questions:

    1) If they trust the adult to set up the system, and thereby determine if parental controls for games will be used, why not trust that adult to determine if friend codes are necessary?

    2) Why won't they allow an online mode where you can hook up with anyone, but not talk (or are confined to standardized questions/comments)?

    Two Answers

    1) No one ever said Nintendo can trust adults to setup the system. The Wii may be billed as an all generations system, but unless the Baby Boomers have changed in the past year it cannot be assumed that parents have any clue what the online parts of the Wii do and do not allow. As such Nintendo is wisely requiring everyone to follow the same steps that forces friends to already know each other before they can link up to share Mii's or eventually play games. If some kid were to randomly find and hook up with someone dangerous Nintendo would receive a slew of bad PR.

Additionally, the Wii code looks to be a one time per console thing, so "friends" will only be inconvenienced once.

2)They already do with most, if not all, compatible DS games. On the Wii, you will presumably be able to do the same thing.

As much as I would like to poke fun at Sony for this seemingly high mark, they can also make a profit by selling a combination of PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies. It is much more reasonable for someone to have lots of movies than lots of games. Assuming of course the purchase is made at a retail store so Sony gets the profit, rather than a used dealer.

This might be true for the early adopters of VOIP, but the VAST majority of this potential market only travels to two places, home and work.

I work for one of the major phone companies, they understand (whether their service record shows it or not) that all 95% of consumers want is a dial-tone when they pick up their phone, a clear picture when they turn on their TV, and a stable internet connection at their preferred speed.

The company (or companies) that provides those services for the best cost on one bill is going to win a lot of people.

Declaring a service as 'essential' or 'utility' tends to lead to a local (and in the case of AT&T national) monopoly. That will only remove the likely-hood of competing ISPs for certain areas, assuming you could even craft a scenario where one ISP could be declared a utility. Do you use a dial-up, dsl, cable based, or fiber optic only as a basis for the service? Nor does this offer any sort of grantee that you prevent utility from favoring their own products, in fact you encourage the opposite by way of bundling.

Nor does the government have to declare and ISP a utility for it to regulate it, they already regulate ISPs. The 'simple' step is to make it illegal for an ISP to use packet shaping or throttling ports; however, that isnt so simple when you know ISPs need to be able to control the traffic to certain ports.
