Years and years of slashdot reading, and it feels like it may be ending. Or at least changing. Ouch.
I felt the same thing when I opened up slashdot today. Sadness. Over time, my daily rotation of webpages changes...but slashdot was/is the only constant. So much learning one can do in this corner of the internet. I hope that spirit continues when moving forward.
Somehow this has hit me harder than Jobs stepping down. I've been coming to Slashdot for the news/commentary for about 13+ years...and still plan to do so.
Man, it's weird, I've never met Rob or corresponded with him...but it feels like I'm losing a good friend or family member. The internet can be weird sometimes.
The rubber room concept is interesting, but I think it will only work for a period of time. Users will figure out that something is wrong when other users don't acknowledge a post/topic/discussion...and then multiple usernames creep into the forums (unless you are allowed one username per IP).
I sneak in at night and paint my neighbor's cubicle pink, decorate with construction paper hearts, and tie a real pony to his desk. He always comes in the next morning and say "OMG PONIES!"
I really think Nintendo approached the Wii intelligently. When trying to shake things up in the gaming world and going with a whole new control scheme, using a revved-up Gamecube might not be a bad thing. Think of the risk involved. If they put out a platform that rivals the Xbox or PS3 with a new control scheme, the console would be expensive and people would not take the risk of learning something new. Nintendo is dead in the water.
But if Nintendo bumps up the specs on the gamecube (small risk, graphics are decent) while introducing a new control scheme (big risk) while keeping the price cheaper than the other two consoles (still making a profit on each console), people can afford to take a risk...and they have. The Wii is a success so far, and caught the game makers with their pants down. They weren't prepared for this and now they have to shift too.
What is really interesting, in this experiment by Nintendo, is that because the Wii is so far a success, this lowers the risk of incorporating higher end graphics, HD, 720/1080, etc for Wii 2.0.
Sorry, a little new to the game on the Xbox Live Video, but why are they promoting it in conjunction with HD-DVD?
Why invest in an HD-DVD player when 720p looks darn good?
For that matter, why even invest in HD-DVD or Blu-ray if HD downloading is here? (granted you need high speed access and time to download) With AppleTV, XBLV,...it seems like the HD-DVD/Blu-ray is the "mini-disc" step before mp3s became the format of choice.
Sweet, thanks for the reply. I'll check it out. I haven't had time the last few years to devote to a series. Thank God for the series/season DVDs....I can catch up.
Cheers,
TFG
I didn't follow Firefly, and I saw Serenity about 4 months ago. (Please don't revoke my geek card)
I must say, it was one of my favorite SciFi flicks to date. It totally surprised me, decent story, decent graphics. I recommended it to a lot of my friends. I described it loosely as if they made a movie about Han Solo. (rugged, funny thief...they almost dressed the same)
I was looking forward to another movie. I like the SciFiWestern combo that he pulled off.
An early version of Northrop Grumman built the Apollo lunar lander. Companies bought by Boeing built the Apollo, Gemini, and Mercury capsules, and Skylab and the space shuttle.
"NASA decided to do something different and go with a company that has not been in manned space before, sort of spreading the wealth and making sure they've got two contractors that know the manned space business"
I don't know about you, but doesn't this scream cost overruns?
If I am going to the moon, I would like to have a company who has a history of building manned spacecraft.
I realize that all of these companies will have a piece of this, let's hope they can dig up some of the older engineers who knew how to design these capsules without reinventing the wheel again.
My Google Soulmate Search found an overweight girl living in her father's garage with orange cheeto stained fingers sucking down a Diet Mountain Dew posting messages on/. about how April Fools Day stories just aren't funny.
It's funny, I feel the same way...if there was one thing I held true on the internet is that CmdrTaco would be running Slashdot until I died.

Godspeed Taco!
Yea, I tried that but my desk isn't long enough for my legs.

Maybe the Fox News crowd would understand it better if the guest "intelligently designed" it for them.
A philosopher who was funny...he will be missed. (lifts glass) Cheers, TFG

Never gets old.
KMOX fan as well?
You're either smoking too much pot or not enough pot...I don't know which, though.
...yeah, I will definitely have my Mom clean up the basement and purchase a few more bags of cheetos and bottles of mountain dew for the partay.
Please, please, please, please... Even combining the balance board with the Zapper could provide a cool way to duck and move with an FPS.

Did you hear what I said Viacom? Or shall I turn it up for you?

If they find a "global" killer, it better be 200 years away from us before they were to release it to the public.
Imagine the chaos that would arise. The planet would wipe itself out long before the asteroid would hit.

Would it be better to know or not to know?
I agree, and if you aren't jumping around the room rocking hard enough, you lose points.
