  1. Re:Games. on Useful Apps for First-Time Windows Users? · · Score: 1

I did say most didn't I. But software that specializes is a different breed, with their platforms depending largely on what their business users are running. If all the businesses in a particular industry are running Windows, then what financial gain is there from making the tool cross platform? None whatsoever ... However, when you move out to more generalized software for the average consumer (i.e. productivity, graphics, entertainment, etc., essentially what the story submitter was originally polling), then the landscape changes. More Mac users means more financial incentive for companies to make their "can't-do-without apps" cross platform.

  2. Re:Games. on Useful Apps for First-Time Windows Users? · · Score: 1

I think you'll find that with the exception of games, most "can't-do-without apps" are already cross platform. ... Productivity? Microsoft Office. Graphics? Photoshop. Music? iTunes. Anti-virus? Well, scratch that. The point being if the software is any good, it usually makes financial sense for it to be cross platform.

The focus shouldn't be on video download prices, but rather music download prices. With reports that the RIAA is negotiating with Apple to raise the price of music downloads from $0.99 upwards, Apple now has more leverage to keep prices where they are. If a commercial-free 45 minute episode of a hit TV series only costs $1.99, how much can they expect to charge for a 4-minute pop song.

I remember the first NFL2K game and how it showed up at E3, coming out from out of nowhere to shock everyone. Been a big fan of the series since, so it's unfortunte how they lost the rights to both NFL and ESPN. Hope Sega can bounce back.

And is Visual Concepts any different than, say, the Sonic Team or AM2? Aren't they all separate companies now but still under the Sega umbrella?

I like Al Michaeals on the play-by-play, but all the repetative MAdden-isms are awful. I preferred the ESPN football the last few years. The gameplay was better in ESPN/Sega, but not so much so that one was much better than the other. But the voice over work was much less irritating and made for a better game experience.

Did you ever consider that maybe it was Sega and not ESPN that made the game a good game?

  12. Re:Will it sell well? on More on the iTunes Cell Phone · · Score: 1

I can think of three reasons right off the bat.

    1) Right now it costs cell phone users, what, $2-$5 dollars to download a midi ring tones for their phone. And LOTS of people are buying them at these absurd prices. Apple will sell users of this cell phone the entire song for $0.99.

    2) There are a whole lot more cell phone users than there are iPod users. A LOT more.

    3) People do not want their pockets to be overloaded with stuff. You have your keys, wallet, cell phone, pda, mp3 player, whatever all fighting for the same space. So instead of bringing your iPod and cellphone, just bring the 2 in 1 and you're set. This is one huge reason why Treos and Blackberrys (blackberries?) are so popular.

Mac mini has a ATI Radeon 9200 card with 32MB video RAM. Not a great card, but not too shabby. Plus Apple does a really good job at making things look really pretty with even the most minimal hardware. OSX has historially run better/faster on the same hardware each new release. So I'd expect Tiger to run even better on Mac Mini than Panther (the current default OS). Strange I know, but Apple is a strange company.

I think that people who already shelled out cash for an I-pod aren't going to rush out and buy this now. It's going to be a toy for the rich. Plus, quite frankly, most people want to be able to download free music to their MP3 player, and this sounds like it can only use I-Tunes store. I doubt that it will be popular.

    I-Don't know about that.

I would think it would always be appropriate to tell the people you are communicating with that they are sending you something that you can't read. If they sent you a snail-mail letter written in binary, wouldn't you say something about that, or would you go looking for a binary-to-english dictionary? If enough people speak up, things change. Sometimes it only takes one person to explain the problem before it gets fixed.

Sorry, I fully agree with the grandparent. It's not his job to convince his customers to abandon Outlook. It's his job to serve the customers. If they want to use Outlook, he'd better be able to receive emails from Outlook or those customers will find another vendor.

I only wish everyone's experience was as problem free as your experience. It apparently wasn't. The issue I have with my unfortunate experience is that Valve went out of their way to purposely set up a bottleneck in the name of anti-piracy. That's fine and dandy, but when you turn the game CD into a coaster until after the customer is able to connect to a server, you better well make sure that server has enough capacity to accommodate all CUSTOMERS.

Personally, I don't see how they DIDN'T see this coming. They inconvenienced their customers by forcing them to authenticate online to unlock the game. Then they further inconvenienced their customers by not even being able to unlock the game when it was suppose to be unlocked. Wonderful.

In other words, the realtor doesn't lock the door and throw away the key and have the new home owners wait outside, even if it is only for a "couple of hours."

I agree that early adaptors shouldn't expect a perfect experience. But this wasn't some bug. This was a purposful decision. Valve artifically disabled their game and, for many customers, were not able to re-enable it. The fault lies entirely with their mangement.
