Isn't this starting to feel to many Mac users like an upgrade roller-coaster? ... Maybe my memory is off here, but it seems like these upgrades are as bad as Windows, only with less substantial sounding version number changes.

Yes, your memory is a bit off. Ask any Mac user and regardless whether they have choosen to upgrade or not, they all pretty much agree that the differences between each .x release of OSX has been huge.

Anyone know what the changes will be in 10.4?

Apple did say they wanted to focus/improve on the speech capability of OSX (voice commands, voice recognition, speech synthesis, etc), but I'm not sure if that was something they were working on for this release. However, the current OSX (Panther) already has something that sort of works.

You know, not too many people even know of that numbering. Personally, I think it shows that MS developers are at least internally consistent with their versioning. Windows 3.x (3.0, 3.1) verses Windows 4.x (95, 98, Me, NT?) verses Windows 5.x (2000, XP, 2003).

Now, what MS sales and marketing decide to name it is separate from that I suppose.

Umm, who modded this as a troll? The change from 10.2 -> 10.3 (Panther) was a huge deal (with many saying the Expose feature alone offered such a productivity boost that it singley justifed the cost of upgrading). Why is someone who wants 10.4 to have as much of an improvement considered a troll?

The cost for discounting software is the cost of the CD and packaging (sometimes not even that if distributed online). The cost for discounting hardware is considerably more. In other words, you're not likely to see $1000 computers being sold for $10 a pop anytime soon.

So while I do agree that certain companies may have somewhat of a strangle hold on University purchases, it's not nearly as bad (nor will it likely ever be as bad) as you make it out to be.

For those who are running Thunderbird on OS X, what made you choose this over Apple's Mail program?

Well, I'll tell you why I use Mail.app instead of Thunderbird. I use Thunderbird on Windows and Linux, but I chose to use Mail.app on Mac OS X with the reason being while Thunderbird is a better mail client IMO, it has two issues holding me back: 1) it is sucks up too much memory when compared to Mail.app and 2) it doesn't have a visual notification when new mail arrives whereas Mail.app does that nicely.

I suppose I could live with the first issue, but the second one is really a show stopper for me.

Interesting. I remember visiting a Toys R Us a few months before Nights was released. There was a huge poster on the front window declaring a price drop for the Saturn and right below it in smaller print, "Sega Nights coming soon." I'm almost certain that was how "NiGHTS" was capitalized. It was the first time I had heard of it and remember walking away hoping that "Sega Nights" wasn't a new console they were going to release (Saturn had come out fairly soon after 32X).

Oh, and there are several fonts who represent lowercase letters by using uppercase letters on a smaller scale. That sort of looks like what Nights did, so I suppose I will continue that spelling. But thanks for the info and links. Very interesting. Never noticed that before.

As I was reading your comments, a few questions popped into my mind. First, Pepsi is well known for their aggressive marketing style. Why wasn't this promotion pushed harder? It seemed uncharacteristic of Pepsi's marketing team. On top of that, why did Apple seem to leave all the marketing up to Pepsi? And when they noticed that Pepsi's marketing wasn't enough, why didn't they try to step in (did they try to step in)? Did Apple think it was a lost cause? It's interesting that something that should have been such a huge deal was barely a bleep on the consumer radar.

releasing itunes for a platform that commands over 90% of the market counts as clever? Huh. I would have went with obvious...

Apple's number one goal is to increase the number of Mac users out there. What happened during the two years where iPods were exclusively for Macs was that you saw some people buy a Mac just so they could get an iPod. Then (and I remember reading this in an interview with Jobs in Rolling Stone), Apple had to make a conscience decision on whether it was more important to leverage iPods to increase Mac sales or whether they should try to dominate the MP3 Player market. They decided the latter, and and it has turned out to be a good decision.

So it was a obvious choice to make it compatible on Windows for an MP3 Player company. For for a company like Apple who's main product is the computer, the choice wasn't so obvious.

And by standardization, that does not mean the elimination of all other browsers. It just means basing multiple browers on the same standard (i.e. user interface, rendering of pages, etc.)
