If it works on XP, what would stop it from running on 2000 other than a Microsoft desire to cripple it so that people have one more reason they must leave 2000 which still works fine for most tasks [as long as it's well patched]?

From what my sources tell me, the IE7 code has rambling, poorly constructed comments. 2000 prevents such code from running.

Look, at the moment, the only way a nostalgic fanboy can play chrono cross is to buy an old copy of the game. That money goes to squarenix. Who would buy an old snes cartridge though, if an awesome updated version was available for free?? What the group should do is send a letter to squenix saying, if we turn over all commercial rights and ownership of the game to you, and only ask for creative credit, can we keep working on this game? You can sell it for 39.99 and it will make a crapload of money, and you will have 0 cost.

My clan runs one of the premier "feel-good" servers in the nation. We are currently running Call of Duty. We have a large flux of players from around the nation, and are hosted on a backbone out of Abilene.

All clan members are rcon admins, and we have strict rules about not abusing these privileges. At the same time, we are empowered to kick people at our discretion.

Our philosophy is that the purpose of the game is to have fun - to that end DaC members almost always spread themselves out across teams, and there is no cursing allowed on the server.

Visit the webpage to grab the IP address and visit us if you have the game (if you don't, it's really quite good.) I'll keep an eye out for ya ;-)

  8. Structure on Switching from Another Industry to Engineering/CS? · · Score: 1

Teach yourself a Real Programming Language, preferably C or C++. Then get a book about data structures / algorithms. Next read up on number theory.

Throughout this period you should be writing experimental programs in all the various regions of programming - math, file I/O, interactivity, etc.

4th get yourself "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" by Abelson, Sussman, and Sussman. Once you've learned C and gone through learning Lisp from this book, you'll be set to learn any programming language at all.

Your next task is learning low-level instructions. I suggest MIPS, or a simple subset thereof.

Next you'll want to pick up introductory books on networking, computer graphics, and AI. Once you've finished those, get the Dragon book and write a compiler (but don't use Fortran).

Ok, now you're almost a computer scientist.

    The last three steps are:

Pick up the camel book, wonder why you bothered with the rest of it.

Get a job writing telemarketing tools in visual basic and wonder why you bothered with anything.

Get outsourced to India and fall back on your physician's skills, clusterbomb slashdot et. al. for sparking your unattainable dream.

  12. Use a membership model. on Building The Ideal Geek Gaming Center? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'd suggest using a membership model, like a YMCA, for several reasons.

    1) People hate paying money. If you only ask them to do it once a month, they'll be happier.

    2) If people make an investment for one month, they will keep coming back, making friends and getting attached to the place. Suddenly you have a returning customer base.

    3) This gives you membership promotion models, like bring in a friend and get a month free.

    4) You have a much better grasp of your financial status because you can say pretty much what your income is for each month.

    5) You know who's coming in and out of the building - theft becomes harder.

    6) If you want, you can let people charge drinks and snacks against their accounts, bring guests for $5 bucks a visit, and all of this convenience makes your customers happy.

Remember, most geeks have to have plenty of money to support their geekery, so they'll be happy to pay you reasonable fees for services and convenience. I believe there was another thread recently where someone cast the slashdot community as valuing their time much more than their money - I would posit that this is true of your target audience in general.

  14. Possible Solution on When Is A MMORPG Beta Not A Beta? · · Score: 3, Interesting

A company like Square-Enix could very easily maintain a stable of beta testers across 5-10 games, rotating in fresh blood every time to keep the pool alive as certain testers grow older and have less time to beta test. After each beta cycle non-responsive or poor quality beta testers could be thanked and excused from service - they could even maintain two pools, one for actual testing and one for winnowing out efficient beta testers.

Think of it like a job interview where the compensation is getting to play cutting edge games way ahead of the public as well as getting the developer's ear. And the company gets a small pool of very good testers (maybe 300) that they can count on to do good work and still be around for FFDQXXVI Online.

  17. Word... on Great Game Characters Compensate For Plot? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Any gamer worth his salt can tell you who Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Barret, and Sephiroth are. Not as many can tell you the names of more than one or two characters from each of the other FF games. This is why FF7 is the most memorable of the series - its characters.

The same goes for great anime - sure you may have liked Vandread or Gatekeepers or any of the recent spate of mass-production animes. But the reason everyone recognizes the names Ayanami Rei and Spike Spiegel is that the characters in Eva and Bebop are vivid, larger-than life characters that we all connect with on a deep level.

Great literature is the same way - from Arthur to Yossarian, Hamlet to Holden, great characters are what connect us to and captivate us with any story.

When FF7 came outfor the PS1, Sony aired a series of commercials that absolutely blew my mind. It was (as I'm sure you all know) a revolution in the RPG genre and cinematic, CG-based game presentation, and the commercials documented the awesome production values and thematic, character-driven storytelling of the game. I went out and bought a ps1 and the game with 6 months of allowance and lawn-mowing profit the day the game came out, mostly due to those commercials (I had never played an FF game before that).
