I agree, bittorrest is very useful and actually has a lot of legal sofware. It is the exception; most every filesharing program is used by 99% of its users for illegal activity. If someone doesn't believe me, go and look for yourself.

  2. Re:Substantial non-infringing uses on MGM v. Grokster: Here's Why P2P is Valuable · · Score: 2, Interesting

The thing is that all of this stuff is availible on web pages already. P2P is used almost exclusively for copyright infringement, if it wasn't you could get the same stuff from a normal server. If you want legal software you can go to sourceforge or download.com or wherever it is distributed. If you want legal music there are places for that. Everyone who uses P2P knows that it is for illegal use. Yes, there are some legal transfers on P2P, but the vast majority are not.

If the government shut down P2P this would not stop you from non copyright infringing transfers. People need to stop pretending that Napster and all of its descendents are not for stealing music and software, they are specifically meant for that.

  4. Re:Ok on Massive Layoffs At AOL · · Score: 1

They weren't laid off for no reason whatsoever. Like any company, AOLs goal is to make a profit, not to provide jobs. If those 950 people were helping profits, they would still be with the company. If they wish now they can go help another company, although hopefully the next one will be smarter about having the correct number of employees. Or they could even start their own employee friendly company.

Look, if AOL is really being dumb they will go out of business because another company will be smart and not fire people "because they felt like it." Maybe Disney fired those people because they could be a more profitable company without them. Maybe you think capitalism sucks, but communism is even worse.

We are securing safety for America by elimating a threat to our security. If you consider that to be "securing American interests" that's fine with me. I'd rather get rid of the terrorist supporters in the world than die in a terrorist attack. If oil is the big key, why did the United States go into Afghanistan? There's no oil there. It was for security, as this war is. Yes, it isn't really about freeing the Iraqi people, but there's nothing wrong with positive consequences.
