"hey, credit bureaus, guess what? You know how you were too fucking lazy to change your forms/software to account for these other countries and SSNs? Well, now you get to eat those debts, in your profits. And we'll let the IRS know, too, so you can't try some rotten underhanded tax tricks. And if we catch you wrongly harassing innocent civilians again, we'll rip out your balls and ship them to Jupiter. Clear?"
It frustrates me - the government is supposed to be here to serve the interests of private citizens and protect us from big corporations trying to rip us off (among other things), but somewhere along the line, they teamed up with big business and pinned down the American consumer while big business just kept swinging.
I'm not wishing I had a Blackberry or Android, at all. Never will. Their UI and experience are shit in comparison. And something useless like Latitude won't make me switch platforms. That author was making some pretty stupid generalizations.
People aren't switching platforms due to apps on the iPhone (or not on the iPhone), but they *do* want to switch carriers in the US. Many will tell you - the moment Apple drops AT&T and goes Verizon, you're going to see a HUGE migration. Some people will be giving AT&T the ol' "fuck you and your mother" while Steve Jobs is still on stage. They're here for the iPhone, and aren't about to change phones.
The professor was playing the game correctly. It's the other tools who weren't... if you want to dick around, just try Second Life. If you're on a game where you're supposed to battle someone else, expect a battle.
Is it possible they're merely testing to see if they can pull a full-scale blockade of Internet communications, if they ever have the need? I know if I was running a tyrannical government, I'd be looking to avoid the problems that Iran's government is having. You can't block them after things go bad, but if you do it *quietly* shortly before, you might have a better chance. Possibly.
Why does AT&T feel the need to do this? Everybody knows that Apple was more than confident that they didn't need to compete in features, because they have a great UI.
I had a professor in college who felt that anytime a new media would take off, it was usually thanks to pr0n. An example he gave was VHS v. Betamax. The Sony guys didn't want their precious format to be corrupted, whereas the VHS guys just let anyone use their format.
If this thing has potential for advertising or any kind of media, and if p0rn grabs it and runs, it will be here to stay.
All it will take is one more act of terrorism on U.S. soil, and the U.S. gov't will make them required for everything, just so they can keep tabs on people.
When I learned VB a couple years ago, it was cool because I could see some great results after a couple hours of lecture. The other C-based languages were meant to be started out in the console environment, then working your way up from there. But VB let you have a window with buttons, and stuff happened when you clicked, and it was pretty simple. From the way it sounds, Microsoft has kept that ability, while giving VB enough power to do more advanced things...
"Like most others do"?! What are you talking about? Buddism, Islam, and Hinduism are other religions that are focused on evangelism... some even more than Christianity! Christianity is probably one of the more mild ones, especially when you look at how their god treats them in those other religions. Islam scares me the most, given its demands for complete obedience and dedication 24/7. I have quite a bit more freedoms than they do, and my God doesn't demand the crazy get-on-knees-and-pray-to-Mecca.
Their site is hideous. They need to hire an artist or designer to help them make it look better. Oh, wait... considering that they want to destroy every artist's rights, why would any artist want to help them? Hmm.
I think this party is a big joke. It's only goal is to destroy IP laws, so that they can steal other countries' creative works and get away with it.
(oh, you think Sweden actually has creative works? Hahahaha!)
We need to be more careful when using audio devices, no matter what they are. A guy down the hall in my dorm turns his music up so loud, I can't even think, unless I close my door. He'll be deaf some day.
I myself have a hearing impairment (from hereditary conditions), and I'm doing my best to avoid further damage. A good strategy that my audiologist recommended is to turn the device on at the lowest volume, and while it's playing, slowly turn it up until you can just understand it and stop there. Turning it up any further than that is pointless, and if you get used to higher volumes, and continue to turn it up more, you risk damage to your ears through long-term exposure. This is subjective to everyone, but a good rule is "if you can feel it in your chest, it might be too loud". Using the sound check feature on iTunes and iPod lets you set it and leave it, since it will be at a consistent level from then on.
Earbuds are dangerous, because it's direct, unfiltered sound straight into the canal.... But those iPod earbuds aren't all that great anyway, so it's a good thing to replace them.
You're right about people not re-buying music for their 2nd or 3rd iPod... I've seen a few people go through iPods like candy.... especially people who already have more music than will fit in an iPod!
The United States Supreme Court has based many decisions on a similar idea. Basically, free speech only goes as far as you not purposely trying to cause trouble, cause a fight, or things like that. There are also other qualifiers, but I don't remember them exactly. As an example, you can walk into any public place and say what you want to, but the moment you start screaming at a guy specifically to make him mad, or use a megaphone to scream into everyones' ears, you're out of "free speech" territory, and the courts will very well rule against you, since you're just stirring up trouble. The KKK can march down the street as long as they don't try to assult or hurl profane insults at anyone. The law, as you can see, is a very strange and unpredictable place, and we don't know where it will go next.
Right now, my college computer is a G5 PowerMac, so it stays in my dorm, and I use paper to take notes. But back when I had an iBook, I was using it to take notes in the harder classes, and to surf web sites in the less challenging classes. If I already know the material (and am just taking the class to fill credits), then I tend to not pay attention in lectures, but do well on exams. However, if the class is difficult enough, I do pay attention and take notes, so that I can do well. See the relationship there?
In addition, my attitude towards the class is the same as what I see in the professor. The one who shows up late is considered a joke to me, and I just surf (either Internet or daydreaming) during his lectures. The one who is very punctual and organized gets my full attention.
Yeah, that will work. They'll want to help the nice men who give them free booze, and screw those jerks who make them pray to Allah 5 times a day! Booze is more fun, right?
...because they will be able to launch one way missions without too many naysayers complaining about it.
Except for the fact that once they get there, and it hits them that they won't be heading back, don't you think psycologically they aren't going to be ready for the mission anymore. ("Sir, what's your status? Have you landed safely?" "Who cares? I'm gonna die here anyway.")
So there will be naysayers, except for the fact that they'll be on another planet.
The front of my Mac has a white light, which I assume is an LED, that creates a "pulse" effect when the computer is on standby. That thing is so bright, I had to cover it up to keep it from being so bright that it would keep me awake... and it was less than a millimeter in diameter! Is that an LED? If it is, I would agree on the idea of using it as a light source.
Well, it's at an obscure path, rather than being at lite.slashdot.org or slashdot.org/mobile, it's at /palm.
What the hell is a palm?

the quality will be laughable. Like I always say: cheap, quality, expandable: pick two.

Can't you use a paper clip to manually eject the disk? I remember that it would sometimes eject the disk automatically.
file this under the "no, duh" category...

"I get no spam!" ..... "dvorak.org/blog"
Difficult to figure out, not based on the formation of words in the english language (which was the premise behind Dvorak and Qwerty). No digg. ;)

... why did stupidity and lawsuit-crazy lawyers have to be part of it?

Yeah! Get Dolby involved, and they'll make it Surround Sun(TM).
Warning: The theater could become quite warm rather quickly. If so, run... fast.
