Just spec pocket doors when you have your house built. Expect to pay more for the additional carpentry it takes to frame, and expect a few of them to stick after a few years due to foundation settling.
Here's a simple one: Developer moral. I've been writing ASP.Net with C# since Beta 1. Most of the developers I've had on my teams are happy to be writing in C# instead of VB.Net. It feels more like a "real" language, so they feel more like "real" devleopers.
Hank: So what super-cool adventure are we goin on today? Should I get my SCUBA gear? Brock: We're not goin' anywhere. Your father's workin' on this thing. Hank: SCUBA. SCUBA. SCUBA SCUBA SCUBA SCUBA SCUBA. Say SCUBA. Brock: SCUBA. Hank: SCUBA. It sounds funny. SCUBA. Brock: SCUBA. Yeah it does.
You say you disagee, but I think we're on the same page. Soldering connectors onto the cable is a great way to get a good connection. It's more trouble than most people will go to though. Hopefully, your cheapo connectors don't corrode any time soon, or break as they are reconnected when you have to move something. I've seen cheap ratshack RCA connectors fuse themselves to cheaper components with some sort of galvanic action due to dis-similar metals.
Cheap cables that are never disturbed will have better, longer lives than top dollar cables that are constantly moved.
I think the real trick with cable isn't the cable itself (as others have said, 18 guage lamp cord is just as good), it is the connectors. I buy my cable by the spool from [Insert big box store here, Home Depot, Lowes, etc], and then use the best quality connectors I can find for the application, and do it right. Crimping a cheap RCA jack on the end of some lamp cord and trying to compare it to [insert overpriced cable maker here] will be a lopsided contest. Same cable, quality connector, time, patience and the right tools for the job will get you as good or better results. Or, if your time is more valuable than the cost of a premade cable that fits your needs, buy it.
Does that include an easy to use IR remote? Sorry, I know I could go look at the Hauppauge devices online myself (and probably will), but as long as we're talking about TCO and building a comparable box. My Tivo, without an easy to use remote, just wouldn't be a Tivo.
Here's a simple, possibly flawed idea. Install some high powered IR emitters around the screen. Most CCD cameras I've played with picked up invisible to the naked eye IR (like from a TV remote) as very bright white light. A halo of IR emitters, (possibly strobes?) shouldn't be noticeable by you and me sitting in the theater, but for an unfiltered camera would really wreck any quality of picture possible.
Have a package of razor blades cryo treated... they'll last a really long time. A friend had a crankshaft cryo treated, and the owner of the company apparently puts disposable razor blades in with small batches and gives them out to friends, and sends them to service men overseas.
Quit spreading FUD. MS has not said they won't patch IE for non XP users. Don't beleive everything you read on the frontpage of Slashdot. What they have said is, they will not be releasing the enhancements that XP SP2 added to IE for non XP OS's. Security patches and hotfixes for IE will continue to be produced for non XP systems.
Now, I have to get back to work on my level -3 laptop...
Where do you see Weather.Com charging for 5 day forcasts? I RTFA, and then went to Weather.com and managed to get a 10 day forcast in a matter of 2 clicks.. for free. Seems like a silly business model. Charge for 5 day, give them 10 for free?:)
Since when has Slashdot ever had "original content"? Oh, you want more John Katz?
Slashdot is just a place to consolidate links to articles posted elsewhere on the web. As more and more *logs are appearing on the net, it only stands to reason that more and more Slashdot stories will be links to a log. I prefer them to the daily NYT article links.
Agreed. You do a high level design together, let him code, then walk him through some re-factoring and clean up.

Yup, Google's gotten better, but most engines stip out both the . in .net and the # in C#.
Tell that to the folks still running Windows 95
Only movie characters huh? Maybe soon then: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/

Sure, why not? How many other 16 digit numbers do you deal with on the web?

For this dude's sake, lets hope their game is as reliable as Gothenburg's Volvos.
I actually prefer the Saab Sonett
Hopefully, it is one of these and not one of these

I forward all my non-work e-mail addresses to my GMail account now.. works great.
If your e-mail address had been in your profile, I would have sent you an invite.. ohh well. It's probably for the best. :)

Would the affect Google's ability to scan GMail messages in order to place context ads?

Just plug in your zip code
and they will enforce this non-transferability how? By checking your id, to see if you are the purchaser of record?
Seven Samurai in space? I give you Battle Beyond the Stars!
