Oops, that should be setsu = cut. So the order is different from harakiri. Slashdot requires you to wait 2 minutes between each successful posting of a comment to allow everyone a fair chance at posting a comment.
Seppuku means the same thing, but with Chinese morphemes (but not necessarily from China). setsu = belly, fuku = stomach. They're synonyms. I can't think of a seppuku/harakiri in history that wasn't done by a direct or indirect order. For example, during the battle of Okinawa, many civilians committed suicide when the allied forces were invading because their education told them that death was preferable over becoming a POW.
For those of you who can't read Japanese, here are descriptions of the movie files from the linked article. I liked the dancing movie the best. Running was more like technically running - very careful.
I'm using Winamp 5.0 Standard right now to rip my CD to AAC files without additional plugins... It doesn't allow me to rip to MP3 or at a speed faster than 2x in this non-Pro version. Oh well. AAC is higher quality anyway and I can always use QuickTime with the QTFairUse patch to de-DRM them. It allows ripping at 128kbps -- same rate as iTunes Music Store's songs.
You can link your RHET 101 reference site all you want. It doesn't matter whether you think this war is justified or not because it isn't going to change the terrorists' perception of the occupation. The terrorists aren't pro-Saddam necessarily, but anti-occupation. I don't see how the suicide bombers' actions were conductive in getting Saddam back. Iraq was yet another victim of the US's manifest destiny because it was cheaper and more practical than a Mars exploration.
That's the theory but in actual practice it's different. Either I get trickling download rates (while uploads rates are still high) or I get fast download rates (I'm done when uploads are still around 10% ~ 20% of the amount that I've downloaded).
No, the attacks will not stop because this war is a an ugly ego-trip for White Christian Americans, and Bush is merely using Iraq for re-election and business purposes. You think the actions of suicide bombers were conductive to getting Saddam back in power? You think the attackers even cared about Saddam? Think again.
Also to the supporters of war It would make the democrats look bad for not doing anything about Hussein's crimes that was committed more than a decade ago. "To the supporters of war" is the key, though.
I've seen these 3D interfaces like the screenshot linked from the article before, but the filesystems doesn't look very spectacular... it looks like a poor 3D Excel chart that doesn't show any informative relationship or correlation of data. As far as displaying file and folder sizes go, it seems like 2D pie charts work well enough (there are several apps that do this).
Even if a 3D interface was used, a large amount will still have to be 2D, because that's the best way to display text. 3D doesn't automatically mean better. Many things would be best left as 2D, especially text.
IIRC there was a 3D Windows explorer shell replacement before. Can't remember what that was called...
Not really 3D, but the OS X "genie" window minimizing effect is pretty cool.
In Japan I've seen animated desktop icons, which could have 3D animation.
3D space is best for first person shooting games where you want the excitement of exploration (as opposed to a simple 2D map and easily exterminating bad guys by point-and-click instead of point-and-shoot).
But when it comes to GUIs, usefulness is key. A 3D interface would have to have some additional usefulness over a 2D interface to the user, not just being a good tech showcase for Sun.
I think a 3D first person shooter anti-spam / anti-virus software might be cool, but it'll mostly be frivolous bells and whistles, and more of an attempt to trick the user into thinking they are playing a game as opposed to doing a real task.
Article said: Paris already is taking action, covering more sections of the noisy ring road, directing traffic away from residential zones, building a tramway, and replacing City Hall vehicles with quieter models. By year's end, one-quarter of Paris' 416 garbage trucks will run on natural gas, 50 percent quieter than current diesel models, City Hall says.
Instead of rerouting ALL traffic away from noisy areas, how about giving quieter vehicles priviledged access, while rerouting only the old/noisy vehicles away? That would give the private sector more incentive to make the switch. Sort of like the diamond roads in the US.
There are skeptics. Peter Wakeham, director of Britain's Noise Abatement Society, said funds for mapping could be spent soundproofing thin-walled homes.
"Are they going to shut the nightclubs? No. Are they going to put in better traffic systems? No," he said. "Common sense tells you where the noisy places are."
I used to live right next to a bar last year, and it was surprisingly quiet. It might be because the bars can't serve alcohol after 1:00 a.m., or maybe the loudness of bars are over-rated. Proper walls are surprisingly adequate in keeping the noise level down.
Tompsett said that 10 to 15 computers, standard PCs with Pentium III or IV chips, are at work on London's map. Eight off-the-shelf PCs with expanded memories took nearly a year to do Paris' daytime maps.
Hmm.. a beowulf cluster, perhaps? But it took a year? wow.
This is good because now Open Office will compete with Microsoft Office on *every* level.
Are you saying that MS Office also provides free tech support? Even to those who haven't paid for MS products? If so, there should be more people taking advantage of this.
This reminds me of the time that I fell off my bike and became unconcious. The ambulance ride, after insurance, costed me well over $1,000.00. I didn't get an IV or anything like that, just the ride costed me that much!
Zen has improved significantly since the first iPod was released, but I don't think HD space is that big of an issue for mp3 players. If 1 MB = 1 min., then 10GB = 166hrs 40mins. Somehow I think this will be enough music while I am away from my computer. Currently all of my mp3 and mpeg collection maxes out to 17 GB. I listen to probably less than 10% of the collection per month.

> Which hack was that?
QTFairUse.
Apple disabled QTFairUse?
OS X groups windows, yet Apple's browser, Safari, has tab support. It's hard to explain, but the experience is different.
For me, managing multiple tabs is easier than managing multiple windows, and tabs load quicker.

Not necessarily breakdancing, but they're dancing here (wmv). Extra points for figuring out what genre of music they're dancing to.

This means they don't have to spend as much money on usability testings... Use the customers for feedback.
US bashing is neither left or right.
Espionage goes both ways. So does education. What's wrong with education?
The Japanese NES also had microphone on the controllers.
On the contrary, I thought the US version of SNES was uglier... more boxy, and purple.

Except for people committing suicides by jumping on the railway, and causing delays. There were at least 2 yesterday in Tokyo.
