Second, have you actually _looked_ at the returned HTML from a Google search? It does use CSS within the returned page (see the style section), and it's very compact CSS and HTML.

There are a few oddities in there, though - a lot of <span class=f><font size=-1>blah</font></span> type stuff, where they could have just put the font size into the CSS styling of the span class. My verdict: good, but could do better.

  4. Re:In THIS economy? on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 2, Interesting

In case you haven't heard: the IT economy ain't doing so hot. Getting a new job isn't quite as easy as you are implying.

  6. Re:Quick Q on Hyper-Threading Explained And Benchmarked · · Score: 1

It'll be interesting to see what happens to "hyperthreading" when dual and quad processors come standard on desktop systems for home users.

Well, if you look at the benchmarks that guy did, almost all were won by the dual Xeons with HT enabled, i.e. 2 physical CPUs, 4 logical CPUs. HT is by no means an alternative to multiple CPUs, it's just one of many techniques to get better performance out of a CPU, regardless of whether it is running alone or as part of a multi-CPU system.

So if dual and quad processor boxes become standard for home users, and if Intel is still dominating the market at that time, I daresay you will see a lot of home boxes with 4 or 8 logical CPUs thanks to their 2 or 4 hyperthreaded Pentium 6's (or whatever).

  9. Re:I agree, except about the movies on Steve Jobs and the State of Legal Music Downloads · · Score: 1

I think Jobs was being cagey on that one. Look at the interview - every question gets a longer, considered answer, except the one about the iTunes Movie Store. That gets shot down cold. I wouldn't be surprised if they were working on it right now, so that when sufficient bandwidth for quick & easy movie downloading is cheap and available, they're ready to jump in and start selling.

  11. 20% of revenue from illegal music? on ARIA Threatens To Sue Internet Service Providers · · Score: 1

It is ludicrous to suggest that 20% of ISP's revenue comes from people illegally downloading music. Such a figure would not leave customers with nearly enough bandwidth for illegally downloading movies and games, both of which feature far larger file sizes than mp3s.

I'd say a few SCO execs are likely to get a call from our friends at the SEC, and they ain't gonna be talking about whether or not Tennessee's going to a bowl game this year. I can't decide which is funnier - the point about IBM orchestrating all the outrage, or the point that SCO is somehow more "relevant" to the tech community because they've filed a bunch of press releases! I think he is just going to replace the 'offending' code with a big ASCII middle finger.
