Like I do for kicks sometimes. Or like a whole bunch of reboots do. An established ip connection is "bad" enough. TOssing in a home pc on a dsl connection running BT as a voip middle man is almost crazy.
I dont think most cell phones have gps. They have "enhanced gps" or somesuch. They dont ever interact with gps satellites. They just know which cell tower they talked to and perhaps the nearby ones and do something like triangulation. Your cell phone knows the gps coords of the cell tower because the carrier does. So your phone asks "Hey Sprint, what is the gps of tower 581290?" Its not much more complicated than that, so the results are always going to be pretty poor compared to real gps.
Your magellan gold is a real gps device. Adding a real gps device to a phone would raise the price like 50+ dollars (and bulk). Its not worth it to the buyers right now.
This really doesnt have much to do with no child left behind. Funny how short people's memories are. There were more than a few high profile articles in the 90s about young kids attempting college only to come out well academically but very poor socially. Parents driving to the school every day and picking up their kids. Feeding them, drying their tears, putting them on anti-depressants, etc. Moms quitting their jobs to make the commute. Kids getting teased. And when all is said and done they come out of these schools with no social skills. Unable to make small-talk, unable sell themselves in an interview, unable to make friends their own age, professors not wanting the added burden of teaching someone with the emotional intelligence of a 10 year old, etc.
Its absolutely no wonder universities dont want these kids anymore. Theyd rather have them mature up in high school some before making the leap to college and the "real world." I know intellectuals often decry the socialization process of maturing, making friends, becoming independent,becoming assertive, being a smart consumer, etc etc but if you expect these kids to live up to their potential they need some real people skills. They certainly are not going to get them by feeling like a freak in a class surrounded by people 5 years their senior.

Whatever the "intuitiveness" of the GUI, the fact remains that it would be a rather large effort on their part (and mine) to move in that direction. Even I, a guy who has been using computers in one form or another since the early 1970s, and considers myself fairly adaptable to new interfaces, found the GUI and the general displacement of all the important functions and macros I use in Wordperfect 5.0 to be very hard to overcome.

Your post assumes a real wall between goverment and business. Thatj ust isnt so. In most other western democracies the cronyism is kept on a much lower level. Here its practically flaunted as being "sucessful." You guys can argue about whether its this regular or not, but in the long run uncontrolled cronyism in big business is the problem. You also see this in America with healthcare. This is absolutely why we cannot have nice things, and we pay more too.
Their not encouraging to make anyone healthier, this is just a way to raise profits. Why not give discounts to:
1. People who dont go to the doctor as often as others and have a good track record. A chubby person who is otherwise healthy compared will be paying extra compared to a thinner hypochondriac.
2. Fuck insurance companies to begin with. I cant contest these feees but they'll contest everything Ive ever gone in through as unnecessary or "previous conditition." Now you actually want me to believe they are helping me with my health? If they cared about my health they wouldnt be making me too scared to see the doctor in the first place because of fees.
3. This is nothing compared to real preventative medicine like they get in europe. But the american for-profit system could never encourage seeing the doctor more often, etc.
This is a shameless money grab. I think americans really need to think long and hard about how the only solution for real healthcare reform isnt more profits, but 100% socialization. Then doctors can get back into being into the business of soley healing people and people can stop fearing for their health.

FPS, RTS, puzzle pirates, etc, etc, etc. Pick up BF2 and get in a couple 4 minute rounds. Or the new command and conquer. Leave the compulsive to their skinner boxes, non-existant social lives, and bad hygeine.
