A good MMOG would use the machines of the players to distribute the load of persistence.
How would you handle cheating that way?
When trusting the client with anything but handling input/showing world, you will get a game plagued with cheaters...
With EQ(and probably others) you have stuff like ShowEQ, so you can see anything that goes on in the world - if you distributed load to the clients, the possibility of cheating would be endless...
On the other hand, a company in india doesnt suffer some of the problems that a US based company has - like having 2 lawyers for every developer to check they arent using the "IP" of some other company.
And in the long term, I wouldnt think twice what i would bet on - the "new" democracy with problems defining free speech, or the supereconomy that are making more and more laws that makes it practicaly impossible to start up on your own.
So just because India has some problems with their free speech, they will probably solve it much sooner than the US will become "fair"
TBH i have a hard time understanding a protest like that - the only people that will se your support, is people that is very aware of the problems with patents.
I believe you a wrong! Cross platform IS something to worry about - without it, your game will not work on the PS2 - and saying no to PS2 sales isn't a smart move.
So you HAVE to make your game platform independant to make it work on XBox, Windows AND PS2.
And if you do it nicely, it shouldnt really be a problem to add linux support in there as well.
But when that is said - gaming on Windows/Linux will mostly die within 5-10 years. The average user doesnt want the current mess with drivers an what have you...:)
And the danish minister of culture(Brian Mikkelsen, which is responsible for the copyright business in denmark) has said that the Infosec will never disallow the use of open source software to make use of closed technologies!
Its still illegal according to the law - but trust me - the danish goverment would make it ok somehow!:)

Uhmmm.... Would that be a beowolf cluster of toasters then?!?;o)
Funny as I got modded as flamebait - was not the intention at all!
I see your point, but my point really was, for the same reasons you stated, that hell freezes over before the us gov will give the europeans this kind of advantage!:)
I know which side I'm on, and I know everyone is pretty sure they know what side they are on, but I cant help getting the feeling that Linux side is relying way to much on the Fair principle and forgetting that it is quite difference from Justice in the legal systems.
I have no idea exactly how the american justice system works, but it sounds like its not fair!
Where I live(In denmark), I cant remember a single case where I thought the decision was definately unfair - usually they get it right!
So I really only see this SCO problem as an american problem - if needs be, I'm sure linux will continue outside US as GPL'ed software!
If there are any offending code in linux, a danish judge would most likely say that Linus didnt have a chance to know that it was copyrighted code, and order the infringing code to be removed imidiately - but we all know thats pretty unlikely to pose a problem!
I am perfectly aware that most european countries have such a law for offline media, but the big difference(imho) is that it is pretty easy to make your OWN reply on the internet - but it is quiet a bit harder to get a reply in the newspaper(Most danish newspapers dont need a law to let people defend themselves - they would gladly give the space needed i believe).
Besides it would put too big an administrative workload on the "little" man - something I have a hard time believeing would happen(in denmark atleast)
Its nothing short of American FUD I'm afraid - The council of Europe cannot make any laws in member states at all, and I find it hard to believe that any of the countries will make a law of this...
But the amrican media strikes once again with an absolutely silly story!
(Sorry sensible americans - This is in no way an attempt to troll - but I just feel a bit aggrevated when american media starts to write about silly laws in europe with your current amount of lawyers:))
Latest research concludes that the average memory of a member of the online community "Slashdot", seems to be something less than 3 months(original story)
That, or the internet is severely lagged at the moment(There was that IP over avian carrier thingy...)
I have no worked with oracle and db2, so i cant compare it to that - but i use mssql professionally and mysql personally, and comparing the 2 makes me believe you have no idea of what you are saying!
And how that got modded to 4 is beyond me!
And a little note on Bank of America - people that doesnt patch their servers for 6 months will get into trouble - no matter what os they use!

Heh!
:)
Reminds me of an act by 2 danish comedians:
The more time you spend on the road, the bigger the chance of an accident will happen to you.
So under all circumstances you should drive as fast as possible to limit your driving time...
My economy is fine, I jsut earned $12500 by suing Registar.com... ;o)
i'm having this funny feeling of deja vu....
And even more important - how many african swallows to have an imperial elephant?

Did you RTFA? :)

The article specificly says that pit bosses gives too much false information...
It works - sometimes, but more often than not, i cant copy/paste between applications in X
Have you considered installing linux on those 200 Dells then?

And this would imho be a fair verdict!
Can anyone please tell me what impact this has on europeans???
As I see it the americans can continue with their sillyness, but none of this would come far in an european court!
So feel free american society - Get rid of the opertunity of using linux - that might even make the IT industry in Europe a bit more competitive!

In that case I see a whole new oppertunity to annoy your competitors by sending spam for his products - and see him be sued to death!
> mod me up and you will either go to heaven or date Natalie Portman.

GREAT! I'm an atheist...
Thank you for starting another X-flamewar...

I would have guessed that FLIW was for Fucking Long Instruction Words...
Or maybe it is just a quote from a funny scifi book... :o)
