Having worked for many large websites that have a boat load of visitors every day I think I can give a little insight. (As well as having worked for many web hosting datacenters)
More than likely they have a good deal on bandwdith, assume they use 500Mbps a month, a traceroute from seattle shows they're using at least savvis as one provider. We can safely say they're probably paying no more than $18.00USD per month per Mbps. These are prices a small time carrier might get, they may be paying more and who knows how many other providers they're paying for or if they just buy a blend from their colo center.
Lets put that price at: $9000/month so far
Then you factor in the floor usage, normally you can get a full rack for about 2000 with 40a. I'm willing to bet they use at least 60a per rack, add in another 500. Plus they say they have a cage, they charge extra per square foot, a guess would put the cage at an extra 1000 per month.
So I'd say about 3 racks with a cage would cost around: $8500/month
So far the total is about $17,500.
Now if they staffed their own people and didn't have any outside monitoring or anything of that nature that might be the total cost. In reality they probably have a contract with their provider for one site maintenance, 24/7 on site support, hardware replacement and the likes.
At my current place of employ we pay 30,000/mo a month for that kind of service, I think we're a bit above what one would normally pay but we have a pretty high up time SLA.
Add another 10,000 a month for maintenance/support/supply contracts.
Grand total I'd say is about $27,000/month USD. It might be higher or lower depending on their deal with their providers but normally for a standard colo deal it's around that price.
I've seen sites pay out well above that (100,000+) for colocation and have an awesome return.
So just because they're students they should be held to lower standards? If it's not good then it's not good... regardless of this supposed $100,000 dollars worth of people they need to make it good.
How would you like it if I destroyed your home and your way of life for personal pleasure? Would that be OK with you?
As humans we do this to eachother all the time, maybe we should focus on stopping that first? Certainly if we solve our problems we can then focus on some strange looking animals... right?
I too had been playing around with firefox for a while before it became my standard browser. I used to use safari on the mac exclusively but it's lack of extendability is the only reason I don't use it.
If there were as many good addons as there is for firefox I'd switch back in an instant. Mainly I want firebug, web developer toolbar, and Foxmarks for keeping bookmarks synced between systems.
Now would be a good time to cancel, their policy/service has changed and that's a breach of contract. Even if the contract you originally signed states you agree to future contracts/service/whatever, you can't agree to conditions you haven't seen yet.
Certainly we can survive in other environments, but does that have anything to do with us being bipedal? I find it more likely that our brains are the cause of that. Also there are plenty of insects that exist in many climates. Ants, Spiders, and many more.
We are a fluke and more than likely the only reason we're dominant is because we have much bigger and better brains than most animals. Certainly if we had 2 more legs we would be just as able to survive, maybe even better at doing things like climbing and swimming.
I don't know of any animals that naturally walk on two legs. Even primates don't normally walk on their legs...
More common is 4 legs, and even more common than that is 6+ legs. I would think that following the design of insects would be more effective and stable.
On my powerbook G4, 1.5ghz, NeoOffice is pretty snappy after I've started it. I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding the speed of the application after launch.
Seems like you have a problem with NeoOffice/OOo in general, if you don't like it and it's not working for you then by all means pay for your software. I'm just glad people are putting their time and effort into making something usable that I can use for free.
This is probably the best comment I've read this whole article.
People complain about the situation and that you can't do anything about it. There's nothing stopping you from becoming a police officer or a public official. All it takes is some hard work and if you want things changed you can make it happen yourself (voting isn't the only thing you can do).
After all the government is run by people like you and me. Where do you think politicians and police officers come from?
A few friends of mine have become police officers after serving in the military and I feel safe knowing these good people are out there to "protect and serve".
Except it's more like "banned from entering any store for 3 years". Think about it, he can't communicate and interact with others as well as not being able to buy things online or even learn more about programming. The internet does a lot for us, it's a learning tool, it's a shopping mall, it's a way for us to interact socially.
If I were banned from the internet for 3 years I wonder where I'd be today, I certainly wouldn't have a job as a web developer.
That's funny because I run CentOS and FreeBSD on my servers and I never have to deal with downtime. Though if I want to fix kernel security issue I'll schedule maybe an hour of downtime and in reality only have a max of 5 minutes (the time it takes to reboot)
To each his own I suppose, I personally can't afford to screw around with confs and such while a server is down, 99.99% uptime is important to me.
I don't understand why people let companies walk all over them. I know having a job is important but your self respect is also important. Don't let companies jerk you around and if there's anything in the offer letter you don't like then take it up with them. If they don't want to change it then it's up to you to decide to reject the offer.
I always send my resume as PDF format. If the company can't read my resume and my cover letter (email body) can't convince them to install a pdf viewer then I don't want to work for them, I'm not jumping through any hoops to get a job. I am valuable to many companies and if one isn't going to take the time to read my resume how I wanted it to be seen then who cares?
I've done pretty well for myself and I've just recently started a job that doesn't pay as well as previous jobs I've had but it's definitely a great environment and they treat me well, unlike those faceless corporations that I've tried so hard to distance myself from.
Not only that but if they can't see why I'm right and they're wrong (lol) then they're too thick headed for me to work with.
Well when you put it that way it does sound pretty illegal to me... I only download movies when I miss their release in theaters and before their release in video stores. Otherwise I buy all my movies, over the past few years I've accumulated over 1000 DVDs and DVD box sets all of them are either the directors cut special release or there was no other version available.
Honestly if there was a sign and the keys were there I would definitely take it. Maybe that's just me though... if anything is being offered free of charge I'll take it. Obviously I know bootleg movies and things like that are illegal but if I honestly have no clue I'd do it, better to be ignorant and happy than to be smart and afraid:)
I wouldn't be so sure about that, a quad band phone could technically connect with many different providers. If the phone needed to be unlocked it wouldn't be too hard to do considering it wouldn't require changing the phone in any way.
Seriously, why don't we have a phone market like Europe? I shouldn't buy my phone from Verizon Wireless -- I should buy my phone at Target and then pick a compatible provider for that phone. No contracts, no provider lock-in.
I've been using unlocked phones with cingular for a long time, I just walked into the cingular store a couple days ago and got a new sim for free and put 20 bucks on it for yet another phone. Free mobile to mobile (cingular network only of course) and it's pretty cheap and easy to use. I wish it were cheaper with data plans n such but still, it's getting there.
Maybe in the next 5 years we'll see a more open market for cell phones, keep in mind cell phones are a fairly new technology and most people don't know that you can get a "non-cingular" or "non-tmobile" phone. It's odd for me to hear "have you seen that new tmobile phone?" but hopefully soon we'll hear more of "hey have you seen that new sony ericsson phone?".
So you exclude the reason why? It is because it's on windows, the only reason itunes exists on windows is because the ipod became popular among windows users so they had to release itunes and their itunes store for windows. It is not the same application as the Mac version and we don't really care.

Exactly, I think of that 1 million the majority of them are already firefox users and they just want to test it out, see how good/bad it is.
I did download it though I'm not using it as my main browser, I don't even use it on my powerbook.
Now would be a good time to cancel, their policy/service has changed and that's a breach of contract. Even if the contract you originally signed states you agree to future contracts/service/whatever, you can't agree to conditions you haven't seen yet.

I think you mean "virtual pig".

You can still buy two dollar bills, they aren't worth more than two dollars unfortunately and I don't see that changing.

Once wikipedia expands past our Solar System I'll most definitely call it that. Also I need it in book form with don't panic written on the cover.

what can I say, I'm a young professional... and over 3 or 4 years that's not really that much
Well when you put it that way it does sound pretty illegal to me... I only download movies when I miss their release in theaters and before their release in video stores. Otherwise I buy all my movies, over the past few years I've accumulated over 1000 DVDs and DVD box sets all of them are either the directors cut special release or there was no other version available.

So where are the free cars I was promised?
I wouldn't be so sure about that, a quad band phone could technically connect with many different providers. If the phone needed to be unlocked it wouldn't be too hard to do considering it wouldn't require changing the phone in any way.
I'm pretty sure that was his point, there are 100s of millions of users with ipv6 already and it's not causing issues.
I've been using unlocked phones with cingular for a long time, I just walked into the cingular store a couple days ago and got a new sim for free and put 20 bucks on it for yet another phone.
