Apple may be phasing out Firewire support on iPods so that they only need to support one way to connect to a computer whether it be PC or Mac. Since both PC's and Mac's have USB ports but many PC's do not have Firewire, it makes sense to use USB. Combine that with the fact that USB 2 is much faster than the original USB was and able to power the iPod as well (probably the reasons for using Firewire in the first place) and it just doesn't make sense to support both USB and Firewire on new iPods anymore.
The more I read what people think of the new products Apple released, the more I see that everyone is missing the point. It's all about video iPod to everyone, but I think that the new iMac with Front Row and the Apple Remote are more telling about the direction Jobs is taking the company. Imagine, down the road, Apple releases an iMac in size and resolution comparable to lcd televisions with a built in tv tuner, or at least a mac mini with the remote and a tv tuner that can connect to an existing tv. Then imagine if more studios allowed shows and movies to be sold through iTunes (which may need a name change to something like iMedia). Then people have one source for their digital media, music, photos, movies, TV shows, DVD's, etc. Instead of taking Microsoft and Sony's approach of making gaming systems that offer these features, take something people already store their media on and give it a remote, software, and a pretty packaging. I can see Apple eventually offering TV shows and movies in a larger format if strides can be made in internet infrastucture and in signing movie/TV companies on board. The current offerings are merely to test the water, to see if the time is right yet.
Except that all the email addresses end with "@gmail.com." If google changed it to "@google.mail.com" or some similar name, everyone with a gmail account would have to change their email address.
I know most of you here in slashdot fear big brother government, but I say it's about time. Look at what we have been using to identify ourselves: driver licenses and social security numbers. These are both inadequate systems for checking one's identity. Only those who drive have one, and it is left up to individual states to determine the rules regarding them. Social security id's are meant for just that: social security. If we must have something to show, prove our identity with, it might as well be a national ID card. I do not, however, agree with forcing the states, especially the dmv's, to enforce and handle this without proper funding.
Just like the N-gage was a game boy killer? Honestly, I can't even get a cell phone that is just a cell phone anymore. Instead of improving reliability and making better user interfaces, they just add more crap.
Well in that case, because different car models are all comparable, then they are all just knock offs of each other. It's not really worth looking into which car you buy, they are all the same.
Talk about redundant, "level based, wuest driven, class based?" Sounds like you just defined fanasy role playing games to me. The two games are comparable because they fit the description of a MMORPG, not because they are so similar.
What makes this comarison interesting is that Everquest II was made by the reigning champions of MMORPG's (not counting some of the ones big in asia like lineage) and the other is made by a company known for improving upon problems within a genre.
So not only do you not mention any sources for your comparison, you also ignore the other points of the grandparent. Namely, that the US has a larger and older telecommunications network that has been slower to upgrade, especially so in one of their oldest and largest cities.
Um, to help understand the grandparent's comment, I've created this key:
Nintendo = Microsoft
Simply use this key to decode the metaphor, and then it might make more sense.
seems like a lot of negativity in the replys

All of the people who like Halo 2 must be too busy playing it to check the Slashdot story about it.
Anyone else find it ironic that a communist nation with state controlled media is accusing another country of using propaganda to control their people?
Well, in terms of getting developers behind them, Microsoft seems to be more focused on buying it's own developers, such as Rare and Bungie. Not a bad idea since then your developers only make their games for your platform. It seems to me that most of the games worth playing are available on all three major systems. Microsoft must be looking at the same thing. To be different you just need to have a few of the best games only out on your system. how many X-Boxes did Halo sell?
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash? No way. I'm holding out for Freddy vs Jason vs Ash vs Alien vs Predator vs Terminator vs Chucky vs Chucky's Bride vs Godzilla. Now there's a movie worth seeing.
Isn't this the reason Apple develops their iLife software?:
1. make awesome programs for your platform
2. create a desire for said awesome programs
3. sell more computers because you have the only platform with said awesome programs
The only exception being iTunes, and the only reason they made a Windows version was to drive iPod sales without having to support third party software.

Oh I don't know. The Native Americans would probably have been ok with that.
Even cookie monster admits they're only a sometimes food.
Is it just me or has all Microsoft been doing lately is predicting doom for their competition?

Wouldn't carrying a pizza box everywhere look more suspicious than carrying a bag around?

Ah, but this is Slashdot! Where a right to privacy is always read as equivilent to a right to be an anonymous coward in everything you do!

The government has no business mandating how people are allowed to think or behave until *after* they have committed a crime.
Wait, I saw that moview, Minority Report with Tom Cruise (one of his better movies)!
I've seen these kiosks and was wondering how they licensed all those Nintendo games. Now I know, they just took them!
You forgot to mention that is uses Ogg, on Slashdot?!
Technically, you can still get to the information on the site through the google cache, even if it is a day or two old.
Good luck getting an apology for that one.
I've always heard it as, "who peed in your wheaties?"

To anyone who is still complaining about how much the prequels are sucking:
Remember that they are coming from the guy who wasted his fortune on Howard the Duck.
After seeing that movie, it should have become obvious what was in store once he announced work on the Star Wars prequels.
