That is rather simple minded. Your looking at one small part of the equation. You are merely looking at the end link in the chain. If that was all there is to it, yeah sure. The world is not a giant subburban subdivision.
The government is nothing more than an instrument to represent the citizens (at least thats the idea behind a democratic republic) and as such most certainly has more claim to the property (roads/conduits/wires) than AT&T or Verizon or Time-Warner ad infinum.
The government ideally is supposed to be a social contract between all the citizens of a nation and one of its limited roles ought to be managing shared resources that should ideally belong to everyone but can not be easily delineated/separated and are vital to certain "inalienable rights" (things like the air/water the ability to assemble, and move freely) things that it would be harmful if it fell into the hands of a few.
Thats ideally. Yes our government has a mixed track record of performance but I don't think you'll find anyone saying we should live w/o a government (though sometimes I daydream).
Did they pay for it? I mean really did they pay for all of it? All companies that lay wire/pipe/cable/radio frequencies etc they all make use of emminent domain (AFAIK) when they run things through your property do they ask your permission? do they pay you rent? Most of these companies are effectively monopolies (at least in the areas they server) or were at one time. I think when it comes to things like pipes/roads/canals and most other conduits the evil-hated socialist word applys. You can't make a useful network/roadwork radio communication with out going through almost everyone's property, so the resource should belong to everyone. Power company's shouldn't own the power lines (maybe we could actually shop/compete for where to buy energy -this happens to a limited degree now). People should be able to pay for the channels/shows they want and not have to buy the service from the cable company.
I guess this depends on what small is... and what your programming background is and whats already on the machine. I personally find writing swing apps to be extremely quick and easy at least compared to the last time I took a look at using the MFC to do windows gui stuff and everything you need to do it is free (as in beer). I guess MS has released some free development tools for.NET that aren't complete crap but I'm not sure what all you're allowed to do with what you develop with it.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) you'll probably only be able to use java for the gui and you'll need to do the rest of it in something else. But I think writing gui stuff in java is fairly easy. And once you've done it for this if you ever felt the need to write a gui for anything else (on most other os's/systems) you could use java.

I read the headline... got the impression the reviewer disliked the book. Decided to read the review anyway and kept thinking to myself the book sounds decent waiting for a "but" and never found one.
I may have to check it out.
I saw the movie before catching the series, really pissed me off after watching the whole series that wash died =( (book too). I would love to see a second season as long as it included those two, (ah hell even if it didn't, but damn it wash was so funny).
Isn't hardcoding arrays, using flat files for product lists etc a *huge* step backwards? I'm thinking when the server starts up maybe initialize some arrays or temp files that get updated when the database gets updated (though this seems to violate DRY and could cause concurrency issues).
Am I the only one that abhors those drag and drop form creators? I'd much rather code the stuff myself. Most autogenerated code I've seen is hideous to look at nevermind they never seem to allow me to do precisely what it is I want to do.
Thanks, but no thanks... I've had issues with Visual studio fubarring my box, definitely don't want to play with beta software development tools. Why should software dev tools mess with the OS? Unless they are just as entangled with the kernel as IE? Anyone else has suggestions for C/C++ gui application development on a windows box?
wow ok I should actually preview my posts... damn cut and paste... was supposed to start with this quote:

"if(!(new File(name+".lck")delete()))
log.debug("couldn't delete: "+name+".lck file.");"
Well, I'm currently working on developing a swing-based desktop app. Originally it was to be developed in VB thank god that got changed. What other option is there for doing a full blown desktop application?(sort of rhetorical, but I'm interested.. how many languages have real support for creating gui's? is there a way to do a gui in lisp? seems so improbable to me). I guess we could have gone with C or C++. I would like to do some C, C++ since I haven't really touched it since college, but I wonder what the difference in development time would be (minus the fact I'm more up to speed with java than C). The J2SE library is huge and so easy to use. In my spare time I took a look at the MFC library and some tutorial code for it and wanted to vommit.
Still I guess I'm not entirely ready to give up on c, c++ coding for windows, if someone could recommend a free ide/compiler (I loathe what visual studio did to my computer when I installed it some 4 or 5 years ago) for use on windows I'd appreciate it.
Southern ohio. The only thing I really think I'm missing is an ocean. I mean I have access to all 4 seasons, reasonably priced restaurants, housing, insurance, several major metropolitan areas (Cincy, Columbus, Indy, Cleveland, Detroit, Louisville are all 3 hours or less away) when I need some culture. Ok I'd also like some decent public transportation, but having your own car is easy enough and has advantages (visiting people/places 1-3 hours away is easy).
The big thing that seems to be lacking are jobs though that seems to be changing. I've always thought they ought to outsource to the MW.
"And their new concept wich doesn't require a file to hava a parent folder AT ALL and the interface"
You know I've often wondered whats up with the directory structure of all file systems. Its simple/conveinant and intuitive however it follows a realworld model to closely when it doesn't have to.
I mean there is no reason a file should have to physically reside in a folder/directory. Why can't the operating system have multiple views of the file system? SOmething more akin to google's labels but even more flexible. You could easily keep the heirachical nature of the folder system but allow files to be referenced in more than one folder at a time. You could have multiple folder-based views of the same filesystem, plus rdbms views + whatever else someone could come up with. I know these aren't original thoughts why hasn't it been implemented in any major os's (or has it?)
Once upon a time I wanted to learn php. I've done most of my programming in java and when it came time to do web apps I was told to you use JSP (and was thinking that would be best considering most of my experience was java).
What does the acronymn PHP stand for ? (Pre Hypertext Processor?).
Seems like its turning/turned into an entire language in its own right? If thats the case and it was built originally as being competition for asp/jsp/coldfusion etc I would think it would be kludgey as a full blown language.
If it is a full blown language shouldn't and book on design patterns be appropriate?
"You know what, open up your own telephone company by laying your own cable down to compete, you have every right to do so"
And this is why Libertarians can't be taken seriously. How am I or any small startup or hell even a reasonably sized corporation supposed to do the above? Lay thousands of miles of cable across public and private land? I suppose w/o the benefit of ED either (b/c you don't like that idea either do you?)
"To sum it all up, to have a prosperous nation, the government absolutely needs to stay out of the free market. Every time they get involved, not only do they voilate the constitution, they also make the economy a mess."
This hurts my eyes.. the government needs to ensure a free market and this means access to it(markets) for its citizens. Libertarians would trade one form of facism for another. Seriously someone needs to create Libertarian-lite(a party that doesn't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater).
You are joking right? How does one go about building a fiber network? How would anyone go about creating a new network with out interferring in private/public space? (how would you go about creating a new Highway system?). Some things are not feasible with out the use of the govt and ED. Things like sewage systems, roads, power lines etc. Personally I think the government should provide a network much the same way it has provided free-ways.
I know people will bitch "the govt sucks provides shitty service" especially libertarians, but there are some tasks the govt is cut out for and I think one of them is providing access to markets (by foot/car roads or through the internet). Besides weren't the internets started by the US govt...
So who wants to run on the platform of gigabyte ethernet into everyhome?
The future supply of "good programmers" depends on today's supply of cheap programmers getting work experience (and mentoring from today's "good programmers").
I thought the same thing. I kind of wonder why they just don't integerate the device *into* the motherboard (we are talking about a motherboard manufacturer) and have its own "controller". I guess basically it would just be 4 extra slots for ram that constantly powered.
If Canada is not that much different than the US. The telco here is going to get itself in serious trouble. If they are going to selectively censor web sites, they are taking on a lot more responsibility than they are probably wanting. Suddenly (at least in the US) they could be held liable for whatever transmitted across their lines(kiddie porn, warez, pirated mp3's etc).
Lastly it is highly likely they are breaking contracts with the people who lease their lines to provide their own interenet service.
Honestly free speech should carry over to communcation channels regardless of who owns them.
How would you like it if the phone company monitored your conversations and censored what they thought was inappropriate (it'd be illegal). But are you honestly advocating that you should just switch phone companies?//is the parent modded insightful, for the mere hint of libertarianism?

You said family owned... is he/she in the family?
If not you can always go to his/her boss as a group and air your complaints.
If thats just not politically feasible look for another job or put up with it.
Lastly if you're feeling ballsy tell him/her how you feel. If you do it en masse maybe he/she will resign or take steps to improve the situation.
