With the system requironments for longhorn recently released ( dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.) a browser like firefox which is fast and doesn't use up that many resources would be ideal for such a "big" OS
If you look at most of the internet businesses today you will find that a big chunk of revenue goes towards paying:
rent
electricity
property tax
If all of the people in an internet comapny were forced to work at home then companies like google would save 10-15% a year. Google for example has over 1900 staff and huge open facilities to accomondate them, that is a large cost, that in the future many companies won;t be able to bear, especially startup companies.
MacCentral reports: "The Mac installed base is extremely important to us," said Stéphane Maes, PalmOne's senior product line manager for handhelds. "We will continue to meet Mac users' needs regardless of what OS we're running."
Although eBooks have been slow to catch on it would make sense for libraries to offer their entire selection of books available in ebook form. It could be costly at first but so are the computer, esp. ten years ago when they first started appearing libraries. besides, libraries don't aim to make money, but provide a service of knowledge, eBooks would increase virtual attendance overnight.
It could also just be the job market (it probably is) in Australia minimun wage is 15$ an hour and the people that repair computer make about 50$ an hour. with good skills (and yes connections) you can land a good job paying over 50K a year. This ASK slashdot question relates highly to those about outsourcing to India, and how far 13US an hour can get u in the world.
Google is a great search engine, and a great company, but all this diversifying might turn google into yahoo, where the search engine only gets a small bar at the top of the page.
It was about this time 20 years ago when Apple released those Mac ads taking aim at the monopoly of IBM. "During release of Mac a programmer said to an Bill Gates, "Little does he know it not IBM he's fighting- its you."" (Pirates of silicon valley) I dont know if this is a true story or not but it does show that monopolies come and go, and it doesn't take a miracle.
