I found this article that shows the direct inpact on digital media companies, its details that large fines could mean that a single lawsuit could force companied like Apple out of business
Apple's decisions could be done for the same reasons that Netscape released it's srouce code. Netscape realised that MS would dominate the browser market then pervert the HTML and HTTP standards, in turn forcing them out of the server business. Apple probably knows that in order to servive it will need to release technologies for the Windows platform as well. At home I have Network with Macs and PCs running side by side, connecting to the PCs from the Macs is extremely easy, It gets harder when I need the PC to connect to one of my Macs. It appears apple is trying to appeal to those that run multiple OSs under the same roof, A wise decision.
The most interesting thing is that this is the third Mac OS X release to include more than 150 new features.
Apple is already anticipating Microsoft will copy them, just check out the Shirts from WWDC!
Also notice how little features each windows released comes with, even though they are released every 3 years. Well according to MS 'longhorn' will be more stable, of course only if you have 2 gigs of RAM.
I bought one of the flat panel iMacs the moment it was announced, about 2.5 years ago, and it still works great. The iMac was an incredible value, had an excellent screen, and a fast CPU. I know that sales have been slowing, and the design has been out there for about 3 years, but it is still has alot of potential, and is definately a good bargain.
On the other hand I can't wait to see the new iMacs (mabey i'll buy one), And 3 years is a long time for a computer design. Unless your talking about a PC where towers have been 'in' for over 10 years.
I would really like to know how this is going to affect the Apple resellers who would have a large inventory of iMacs which they would undoubtably have to lower the price on. And as we have seen, Apple is not always on good terms with its resellers
I think the better question might be, "when is MS office going to be able to save files in other formats?" there will come a time when MS will have to adapt to the other programs and formats. Microsoft is supposed to be about ease of use, and compatability, which is why so many people use their products.
If you notice, everything that won an award, is, no matter how complex, relatively simple. None of the winning products had useless features or sails hanging off the side. These products had what they needed, and only that, to fulfill their purpose. take the winning website design, it is one of the most basic and simple designs for a site you can probably find, its simple to navigate, and is quite fast. What is hard to understand is that why more compaines - mainly pc hardware companies don't take note. There weren't any tower PCs on the list, or websites filled with pop-up and banner ads. I think we can all learn alot if we just pay attention.
this reminds me of a tom lehrer song where different countries want 'the bomb'
Now with Microsoft they have waged 'war' with china, the EU, netherlands, Canada, and who's next? A google news search turns up over 120 people / companies Microsoft has sued. So who's next, It may even be you! if the RIAA can do it why not our beloved M$
This might help:
The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is the concatenation of the world's public circuit-switchedtelephone networks, in much the same way that the Internet is the concatenation of the world's public IP-based packet-switched networks. Originally a network of fixed-line analog telephone systems, the PSTN is now almost entirely digital, and now includes mobile as well as fixed telephones.
I wonder how this will work with Opera's plans for an IPO? For those who don't know: XForms:XForms provides a richer, more secure, more reliable, and presentation independent way of handling interactive Web transactions. I made a quick xml page, with the source being here, just to show some people who don't know. Please note that in the example I used css to make the page look like something, this is technically incorrect Some other XML technologies

factbook on japan Matsumoto said one U.S. toy manufacturer offered his company about $10 million (about 1.1 billion yen) for the rights to market merchandise featuring the characters of an animated cartoon his company hadn't even completed. The figure was particularly eye-popping for Matsumoto because it was 100 times what animated films earn on average from broadcasting rights in Japan. - One has to wonder why their aren't any regulations regarding corperate responsibility and minimun wage laws on this matter.
"Four years ago as part of the approval of the 1999-2000 budget, the Board stated: "It is the intention of the ICANN Board to create a reserve account of at least one year's operating expenditures, to be funded over several fiscal years." Approval by the Board of the 1999-2000 budget implied that the Board accepted this statement about the appropriate level of reserves."
An increase in both staffing and expenditures to accommodate the additional programmatic requirements imposed by the new reforms and the new bylaws, that is, the transition from ICANN 1.0 to ICANN 2.0. This would require up to an additional 10 FTE (see below).
1] People start to work and have kids at an earlier age in India, by ensuring people are between certain ages, you ensure they will be with the company a long time.
Every mp3 player that has come out in the past two years has been dubbed an "ipod killer" but it seems the competitors dont understand that people dont just buy and ipod for the 20gigs. You buy it because of the look the feel, the adds, the feeling of going to the apple store and knowing your part of something. i like sony and they make great products, and the video playback looks great but i cant see it beating the ipod.
Sears makes money off of selling products in their catologs. vs. Ebay makes money off of people listing items to sell. The big difference is that Ebay makes money even if the products don't sell, Ebay has both an excellant business model and a huge market share, plus their just plain usefull
Slashdot has a japanese counterpart, The stories get lots of comments almost as many as this slashdot.
"Although about 20 Web sites attract more users than Channel 2, based on March ratings from NetRatings Japan, most of the others are portal or retail sites; and while Yahoo Japan also runs a bulletin board, it is not considered as influential as Channel 2"
I should think Slashdot would be pretty influential, especially in such a tech heavy society.

heres another source I found: DVD recorder prices fall as production surges in Taiwan
But it apears that they are already cheap if you know where to shop.

Looks like MS is diverting resources from other divisions in order to spend more time and money on Longhorn.
