Actually I was referring to using one of the RAID striping levels (that I can't remember the proper number of) to create mirrors of data, versus using a RAID to just have two hard drives appear as one larger one. So rather than Google-search the number since I never remember the things, I just called it redundant :p

  2. Shuttle has been a contender for a while now on Mini PC Grows Up? Shuttle XPC Reviewed · · Score: 1, Offtopic

I've personally built quite a few Shuttles, among 4 different models, and I love them; unless I need a big server with redundant RAID or something, Shuttle is all I'll ever go with now. Quiet, runs fast and cool, and my decked out one is more than adequate for games; I'm willing to bet I can run Doom3 at a bearable frame rate, even. And I tote it to LAN parties to destroy people in UT2k4 or America's Army, running either 1600x1200fullscreen or 1280x1024windowed with no performance loss.

You can make a perfect home/office/small business machine for under $400, that will last for years. Media center PCs, LAN party rigs, Shuttles can do just about everything; they can even fulfill /.'s love of a Beowulf cluster of xxx :p Small form factor is the way to go.

Only thing they lack is space for more than 2 or 3 hard drives (without modding), so a large redundant RAID is not so easy. But the SFF PC is the way to go for most things now, and Shuttle leads the market there. My only complaint is that I like the G2 case style better than all the others, and they haven't put out a new G2 in a while.

Yeah, the last big game of lasertag I was in required you to go back to the base station and reactivate your gun. Sucked, cuz if your team got routed, the enemy could sometimes surround the base and snipe you off as soon as you reactivated. But this was a professional arena place, and their EQ stopped working until reactivated at the base be design. So I guess you could work towards having the guns become inactive until hit by a special beam from the base station or something...

But yeah, penalties besides pain can actually be greater encouragement to do well. Ok, paintballs can hurt or something, but if I get the enemy anyways, big deal. If I get shot and have to go respawn before I can do anything else, its much more encouragement to not get shot.

If this guy had done it entirely at home during his time off, not using Google company resources, it would be a different case, but Google 'endorsed' it with their personal projects encouragement policy I think.

That being said, I hope nothing negative happens to Google as a result of this. I don't really care as to the validity of the stuff, as I don't do the social network deal; I just don't want my precious search engine to suffer for an employee's mistakes!.

Yahoo has nice webcam support and voice chat as well, and is a non-microsoft product. In my experience, it works better than MSN and is easier to shut off when you don't want it around.

I use it pretty much exclusively for webcam and voice stuff. Same with my friends. When your significant other lives 500+ miles away, its a nice solution to 'see' them, and no where near as irritating as using MSN (which has been a POS every time I've accidentally let it stay active on a system). Otherwise everyone I know uses AIM for chatting.

But yes, I still have my ICQ account from the mid 90's too, and my 40 or so contacts on there are never online anymore.

I work part time for a cableco, and while it is our official policy that we do not support, endorse, or have anything to do with routers, I still recommend them. I explain that the cableco cannot support them, etc, first. Then I explain the benefits of getting one; few people bother unless they have multiple computers, but I feel better whenever I convince someone that its a worthwhile investment.

People get irritated at the cost of cable modem service, at the cost of the cable modem itself (whether buying or renting). Telling them to go spend even more money afterwards doesn't go over well. Cable modem manufacturers should start following linksys and making 'all in one' units, with DOCSIS compliant cable modems and a cable/dsl router built as one box; the configuration was a bit weird, but it seemed infinitely more secure by default.

WinXP pro put an end to the reformat cycle of windows, IMO. On Win98 you *had* to reformat regularly to keep performance up. With WinXP Pro I reformat when I do major hardware changes, and thats it. With spyware removal and virus protection it can stay running indefinitely without issues. On Win98 my games would become unplayable simply due to the system bloating and decaying.

Basically, if you're running XP Pro or maybe 2000, reinstalling isnt such a big deal. Win9x, ME, and XP Home (why why WHY is it allowed to exist) are a different story.

Actually, thats not entirely accurate. I've had several DVDs lately that have degraded for no apparent reason, just sitting on the shelf with 300 other dvds. They were not viewed any more or less than the rest in my collection, no subjected to any different environmental circumstances. Granted, given the current costs and difficulties in copying DVDs it wouldnt have been cost-effective for me to have made backups on purchase, but what about when media costs are tiny (as with CDRs now) and the procedure to copy dvds have been streamlined? That moment isnt very far off.

I for one don't trust dvds to not get dusty, scratched, or just plain decay for no reason. So a securely located backup would be nice when it'll cost me a dollar or two, so I don't have to pay $20 to replace a product that should never have failed to begin with.

I know you weren't being serious with the post, so dont think I'm attacking your view or anything :) Since I don't goto the movies at all, and simply wait to buy on dvd, I felt a need to respond, since my rights as a consumer are being violated and costing me when it comes to some dvds now.
