  1. May become a "standard" feature in a few years... on Tagging Photos With GPS Coordinates · · Score: 5, Interesting

The biggest problem I see with GPS and cameras [digital] right now is battery life. Get GPS fixes from the necessary satellites can really run down your batteries fast. This is one area where camera phone may have a advantage; if they are GPS enabled (i.e. motorla iDen, etc.) and can use AGPS from the phone network, it may help with battery life. Nevertheless, as GPS receivers become more efficient, I can see them being integerated in to cameras to provide this type of information. It would actually make for a great vacation application. Take photos with GPS coords, upload photos to computer, computer has an app that "maps" your photos to where they were taken on a global/regional map. Throw in the dates and the app could construct a trip timelime showing all the locations where you took your photos (all the while playing the Family Vacation theme song).

Except in the most important feature to the consumer...tape length..."oh 6 hrs with this one vs 4 with this one" so Joe says humm, gf says 6 is better than 4 so it must be the same for VTRs/VCRs. So better is a relative term...for consumers, VHS was better (recording length and ended winning out in the end.

Great point on the Chinese government and the IP of the companies. However, I don't think those companies via lobbying/trade laws, etc. will allow any Chinese exported products based on their "stolen" IP to be sold in the US or other "western" countries. So those companies got cheap, unfettered research and lose some of it in return (which probably could never be "capitialized" on directly outside of China)....a triple whammy.

  6. Is it really any surprise? on China: the New Advanced Technology Research Hotbed · · Score: 5, Insightful

Considering that companies (MS, IBM, et al.) are patent whoring (whether be defensive or strategic in nature) in the US and reverse engineering is now considered to be a crime in most cases, it is stifling innovation. The US is now a sue-society where money talks and lesser companies/individuals are being held back my the corporate oligarchy.

Add to that the "bad stigma" associated with stem cell research here in the US...it's no surprise to me that the R&D in the US is declining and increasing in the world where people are less shackled by legal systems/lobbyist (now shackled human rights saved for another discussion)

How's that for a desgin concept? I love the xbox because for ~$200 I can get a reburbed unit, a mod chip and a cheap 100+GB HD. Now I have the ability to view my family pics, my ripped CDs, camcorder pics on any tv I have the xbox connected to...many thanks to the developers of XMBC. I just started adding Linksys NSLU2 devices as file servers and the whole setup is getting that much more smaller (footprint wise) and quieter. Now is MS wasn't so anal about the "Not Invented Here" cause we control the world and its $$$, they could have really made some major market share in TV/PC convergence.

I'm sure the xbox2 will be more locked down than so until espn 2k7 or Madden 2k8 really rocks over the current offers, its great to have the xbox.

America [US] is becoming land of the mediocre by the decree of our own government.

"No child left behind" means no child gets ahead. Sure there are exceptions, but my wife who is a teacher has to teach to the lowest common denominator. It frustrates her because due to "social promotion" she has 7th graders who can't read/write at a 4th grade level. Now imagine being an above average student in that class where the teacher has to talk "down" to and teach to the "slowest" kids. Due to budget cuts (hey, tax cuts don't come for free), after school clubs and honor level classes are being trimmed if not entirely cut so many of the "smart" kids are being taught at a 4th grade level/pace since there are no classes/teachers for them. No wonder they lose interest in school and just start reading /. .

CS has had the longest retention of any of the FPS shooters for me (besides maybe Q2 and all of its assorted mods). I think I got hooked because I found a decent, mostly honest server where people would play as a team to meet the objective. You actually felt like you had a job to do and became more immersed in the game.

Once it started to become more and more popular, a lot of the team play went away on "common" servers where it just became a frag fest. I'll definitely check out Source and see how it looks and feels. Hopefully most of the map exploits have been fixed better cheat prevention mentions have been added.
