Aside from that, is WMA such an issue? I mean, now we got flash video players that are platform agnostic...
You're kidding, right? Flash 8 and 9 don't work in Linux, and Flash 7 has goofy sound bugs. Sad to say, but Windows Media works a lot better on my Ubuntu box than Flash does.
recommend anything but IE7 to anyone for many reasons
IE7 is about a billion times better than IE6. I don't know how anyone can stand it, yet I find IE7 rather tolerable for those few, IE-required situations. If someone ignores you when you talk about Firefox, you should recommend them IE7. Anything is better than IE6.
Cartoonish video game characters are no more comical and innocent than smiley faces drawn on water melons stuck on staffs for mounted calvary use to use to train for field combat.
Yeah, there's nothing innocent about Mario Tennis. It's just a battle simulation.;)
Games, as a whole, don't make people violent. Violent video games might make people violent (or just serve as a release for their violent tendencies) but that's why the very violent games are rated M (not for children) and parents are expected to determine whether or not a game is appropriate for children. Adults should be able to determine on their own whether or not it's appropriate for themselves. The biggest problem with this current move by Jack Thompson is that he wants to determine whether or not a game is appropriate for everyone else. That's just off-the-wall unacceptable, no matter how you look at it.
Humans didn't evolve from apes. Apes and humans evolved from a common ancestor, which has since died out. Maybe if you understand evolution a bit better it might make more sense. Here's a good place to start: http://www.talkorigins.org/
I remember reading somewhere that scientists had "mapped out" a religious center of the brain, the part that is active when one has a relgious experience (some Christians decided this was "proof" that God, uh, something). Perhaps this part of the brain is evolving to do something else?
All of the scientific evidence points to evolution. No evidence besides the Bible point to the Earth being 6,000 years old.
The Germ Theory of Disease is also just a theory. But were would medicine be if people still thought that sickness was caused by the Devil?
Well then I guess all those units of unsold DS's at my local store are not part of the shipped figure then? Is there a third figure, because that must mean that those units I see in store are not part of the shipped total?
Huh? The GPP said that 21 million have been sold, obviously more have been shipped.
And you are the first person I ever met that actually says the psp has more good games than the DS."
Really then you need to meet some of the people that play PSP and DS games and maybe even chat to those people on metacritic.
The PSP metacritic list includes non-games (Advent Children) and games not released in America (Eternia) inflating it's great section. Also, several games (like Madden) in the PSP's great section also appear in the DS's middle section, which is kinda interesting. I don't think the metacritic's list should be taken as the be all, end all, comparison of DS vs PSP games.
Flash is wonderfully cross-platform. Even OS/2 Warp had an up to date version for quite a while. I'm not sure if they still do, but I'd trust it on more platforms than I would Java for web stuff.
Flash works well on Mac and Windows, but sucks on everything else. The Linux port is two versions behind (7, versus 9 for Mac and Windows) and has a nasty audio syncing bug. No other OS is officially supported, though some have gotten it to work. Last I heard Flash 6 was running pretty stable on BSD. It's understandable that Adobe wants to focus its efforts on the OSs with the largest marketshare, but if you want to attract Linux/BSD/etc users to your website, you will not use Flash.
Having a loud computer is a hardware flaw. I hated listening to the hum of my old computer. I probably wouldn't turn off my computer at night if it was quicker to boot up anyways. I often have it doing something (downloading, burning, etc) while I'm asleep or out of the house. So your complaints have nothing to do with my suggestion.
I don't really notice any difference in speed between Opera or Firefox, on my plain Pent 2.4 w/ 512 ram. I've never experienced the FF memory leak, even though I've used it on many different computers, running various flavors of Windows and Linux and I use tons of extensions. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, since I know many people have experienced it, but I don't have a problem with it.
Mepis and a few other distros have these. What is special about Freespire?
Do those distros offer these features legally, with no licensing concerns? If not, then that's one difference.
I'm pretty sure they do. Mepis has a paid-for version, which I believe funds the licensing fees, much like the relationship between Freespire and Linspire. If I'm wrong and I'll get sued for using Mepis, please let me know.
Ok, I guess I wasn't clear enough in my original post, since two people have now misinterpreted me.
My friend, who I mentioned, is like those people you described. I was planning on putting Mepis on her computer. What are the differences between Mepis and Freespire? Which would be better for a newb?
"Mepis and a few other distros have these. What is special about Freespire? I rtfa, and the difference seems to be an older KDE. My friend wants me to install the new Mepis on her computer. Is there any reason I should look at Freespire?"
No. But then you're not who this is aimed at. I suspect this is geared more to the people wanting to try Linux for themselves having already used Windows.
Well, so is Mepis. To clarify a bit on what I was saying in my first post: My friend, who doesn't have a lot of Linux experience, is interested in Mepis because I've told her it's good for Linux newbs, and she'll still have all the proprietary goodness without the install hassle (I used more words when describing this to her). Mepis and Freespire seem very simular, is there anything about Freespire that would make it better for my friend than Mepis?

Want to really test the WGA? Use your original copy of Windows XP and search the Internet for a known CD-Key and install with that key that millions of other people have used.
That's pretty much what he did. Go read the article.
The PSP came from nowhere and ate up somewhere between ~30-40% marketshare from Nintendo. Not bad.
I don't think that all that marketshare was taken from Nintendo, I think that the market has grown. For example, my husband and I got two GBAs when they were new, and now we have 2 DSs and 1 PSP. So the "market" in our house has grown 33%, but Nintendo hasn't lost anything. For everyone who bought both a DS and a PSP, it's market growing, not Nintendo losing. Also, many people have bought DSs that weren't buying games before, further adding to the market. Of course, that's because the DS is innovative and has more quality games than it likely would without the competition. So you're right, and the winners here really are us, the gamers.:)
It doesn't sound like you're addicted, it just sounds like you like WoW more than anything else you can do in your town. If you were addicted, you wouldn't have gotten your job. Addicts are scary, be glad you're not one.:)
That sounds kinda like what I went through with Everquest. I was 19, failed out of college, had no job and didn't care. Fortunately, my parents wouldn't stand for that shit. They helped me find an apartment and a job that would barely cover rent and food and that was that. No more freeloading off them. Without enough money to afford Everquest or even internet at first, I realized that I didn't need it. The best thing you can do for your brother is not give him money. Eventually, he'll realize that food is more important than WoW, and he'll pull himself out of it. Once he wants to quit, you can help him, but 12 steps or anything else will never work until he wants to quit.
I like my portable Valkyrie Profile, but I don't see anything else worth buying. I'm not a big fan of puzzle games, so no Lumines for me. I really hope I'll find something good to play after Valkyrie.
My husband's going to be out of town for a week and a half next month. If I didn't know how the living room is wired up, what would I do if I had to move it (say, maintenance needs to fix something, or there's flooding, etc), or if the DVD player broke and needed to be replaced, or even if the cat pulls out one of the wires? Would I just not use it until he got home? What would you do in that situation?

HTML is no greater universal than Flash, Flash has different players (which can be compensated for by directing the user to get the latest), HTML has all its IE/Firefox/Opera/etc problems.
Even if you write the worst HTML ever, I can view it in any operating system (Win, Mac, Linux, BSD, SkyOS, etc) and I'll be able to get the gist and general content, and I can even see the source easily and fix it if I'm so inclined. If you make your page using Flash 9, then I, on my Linux computer, will not be able to see any content, no matter what you do. If you make your page with Flash 7, the audio and video will be out of sync and will likely crash my browser. Flash still has a way to go before you can call it universal.

Get a quieter computer. Mine lives next to my bed and I don't have a problem

I guess I'm addicted to Excel, too. We should start a support group.

I really don't understand not wanting to know.
